The phone is lying on the table and the keyboard is typing “jjjjjjj” into a message you never opened. Or it’s the opposite: you tap, swipe and tap again and nothing moves. A touch screen not working, or one that touches itself (“ghost touch”), is often caused by software, a screen protector or heat, and many cases can be fixed at home in a few minutes.
The rest are hardware. The steps below go from the quick checks to the tests that show whether the touch layer itself has failed.
What sits between your finger and the tap
The touch layer, called the digitizer, is a grid of sensors bonded under the glass. It needs clean, steady contact and working software to turn your finger into a tap. A frozen app, a system bug or a bad update can break that chain. So can a thick, bubbled or cracked protector, or a case lip pressing on the edge of the screen. Water droplets and sweat create false touches. An overheating phone can throttle touch response. Cheap chargers and cables can make touch go erratic while plugged in. And then there’s real hardware damage: a cracked digitizer, a loose display connector, liquid damage, or a low-quality replacement screen.
Try these first, on any phone
- Clean and dry the screen. Power off, wipe it with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, then dry it completely. Wash and dry your hands too.
- Take off the case and screen protector and test the bare glass. A protector that’s lifting, cracked or too thick is a very common cause of dead zones and ghost touches.
- Unplug the charger. If the ghost touch only happens on charge, switch to the original or a certified charger and cable.
- Let a hot phone cool. Close games, camera and navigation and give it 10–15 minutes.
- Force restart (button steps further down). It clears a frozen interface even when the screen won’t respond at all.
- Update the software once touch is back.
Reading the ghost touch pattern
Phantom touches have a short list of causes, and when and where they happen usually points to one.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only while charging | Electrical noise from charger or cable | Use the original or a certified charger |
| Along one edge | Case lip or lifting protector | Remove case/protector and test |
| After water or sweat | Moisture on or under the glass | Dry fully; if it carries on, liquid damage |
| In one app only | App bug | Update or reinstall the app |
| Started after an OS update | Software bug | Install the next patch; test in Safe Mode |
| Started after a screen repair | Non-genuine or badly fitted panel | Go back to the repairer and ask for an original part |
| Constant, in Safe Mode and after a reset | Failed digitizer or connector | Display replacement |
Touch bugs that arrived with 2026 updates
Updates are a common trigger, and this year has had clear examples on both platforms.
iPhone, iOS 27. Apple’s iOS 27.0.1, released on 28 September 2026, lists a fix for an issue where opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time could leave the touchscreen unresponsive. If your iPhone froze after a swipe down from the top corners, install it from Settings › General › Software Update. The other fixes in that release are in our iOS 27 problems article.
Pixel, Android 17. After Google’s Android 17 rollout in June 2026, ChannelNews reported Pixel 10, Pixel 9, Pixel 8 and some Pixel 7 owners saying their screens intermittently ignored taps and swipes, and some said scrolling went the wrong way. Some found temporary relief by switching Smooth Display off and on again (Settings › Display › Smooth Display), which points to software. Keep the phone updated in Settings › System › Software updates. Google’s monthly releases regularly include touch and keyboard fixes; according to TechRepublic, the October 2026 update fixed the keyboard sometimes not appearing in search fields on Pixel 8 through Pixel 11.
Xiaomi and POCO. Xiaomi’s own support FAQ for a POCO F7 Pro screen that is “partially insensitive” to touch blames overheating and background apps using too many resources. Its advice is to close apps you don’t need, avoid long gaming sessions or using the phone while charging, and install the latest software from Settings.
iPhone: step by step
- Force restart (iPhone 8 and later): press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Update iOS in Settings › General › Software Update. On iOS 27, be on 27.0.1 or later.
- Check Settings › Accessibility › Touch. Touch Accommodations should be off, and Haptic Touch duration set the way you like it. Odd settings here make the screen feel unresponsive.
- If it only freezes in one app, update or reinstall that app.
- Reset All Settings under Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset. Your data stays.
- Back up, erase and restore with a computer. If touch still fails on a freshly restored iPhone, it’s hardware.
Has the screen been replaced before? Look in Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History. An “Unknown Part” message for the display strongly suggests the replacement panel is to blame.
Android: step by step
- Force restart by holding Power and Volume Down (Side and Volume Down on Samsung) for about 10 seconds. On a Pixel, hold Power and Volume Up.
- Boot into Safe Mode by holding the power-off option on screen, or your brand’s button combination. If touch behaves in Safe Mode, a third-party app is responsible, often a screen dimmer, overlay, launcher or game booster. Uninstall recent apps one at a time.
- Set Touch sensitivity correctly on Samsung (Settings › Display › Touch sensitivity): on if you use a screen protector, off if you don’t. The wrong setting causes missed or phantom taps.
- Check Accidental touch protection (Samsung Settings › Display). It can block input if a case or dirt covers the proximity sensor.
- Test the digitizer. On Samsung, dial
*#0*#, choose Touch and draw over the grid; gaps show dead areas. Other brands’ tools are in our Android diagnostic codes list. You can also turn on Developer options › Show taps and Pointer location and watch phantom touches appear live. - Update, and wipe the cache partition on phones that have a recovery menu.
- Factory reset as a last resort, after a full backup.
Testing the screen on a used phone
Touch faults like to hide at the edges. With the case off, draw slowly across every part of the screen, type a long message, and drag an app icon into all four corners. Run the brand’s touch test and look at the parts history, then check the IMEI and model before you pay.
Getting the screen repaired
If it still misbehaves in Safe Mode, after a reset, with no case or protector, the digitizer or display connection has failed. Before you pay anyone:
- Get the IMEI with
*#06#and run a free All-in-one Basic Info check to confirm the model and warranty status. A digitizer fault without drops or liquid damage is normally covered. - On an iPhone, a full GSX report shows past repairs and replacements, which helps if you suspect an earlier screen swap.
- Samsung owners can confirm warranty and region with a Samsung Info report.
- Use the manufacturer or an authorised service provider, so the new panel is genuine.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my touch screen not working but the phone is on?
Usually a frozen app or system, a bad screen protector, moisture or heat. Force restart with the buttons, take off the case and protector, and update the software.
How do I fix ghost touch on my phone?
Unplug the charger, remove the case and protector, clean the screen and test in Safe Mode. If phantom touches continue after a reset, the digitizer or a replacement screen is faulty.
Did iOS 27 cause my iPhone touchscreen to freeze?
One iOS 27 bug froze the touchscreen when Notification Center and Control Center were opened together. Apple fixed it in iOS 27.0.1 on 28 September 2026.
Can a screen protector stop touch working?
It can. Thick, cracked or lifting protectors cause dead spots and ghost touches. On Samsung, also try switching Touch sensitivity on or off in Display settings.
How do I test my Android touch screen?
On Samsung, dial *#0*# and choose Touch. On any Android, turn on Show taps and Pointer location in Developer options to see where touches register.
Is a touch screen problem covered by warranty?
A digitizer fault without drops or liquid damage is normally covered. Check the warranty status by IMEI before paying for a repair.
