The most common iOS 27 problems are faster battery drain, a phone that feels warm, interface freezes and, on the new iPhone 18 Pro, unexpected restarts. Apple fixed three of the worst bugs in iOS 27.0.1 on 28 September 2026, and most battery and heat complaints settle down on their own within a few days once background indexing finishes. If yours don’t, the step-by-step fixes below solve the majority of cases without a trip to the Apple Store.

iOS 27 was released on Monday, 14 September 2026, alongside iOS 26.7 for people who prefer to stay on the old version. This guide collects what has actually been reported, what Apple has (and hasn’t) confirmed, and what you can do about each issue today.

What iOS 27 problems are people reporting?

Two weeks after launch, Cybernews rounded up user complaints from Reddit, Apple’s community forums and social media (published 28 September, updated 29 September 2026). The pattern is familiar for a big x.0 release: most reports cluster around a handful of symptoms rather than one catastrophic bug.

Keep the scale in perspective. Complaint threads are a self-selecting sample: people with a problem post, people without one don’t. There’s no public data showing what share of iPhones are affected, and Apple hasn’t published any.

What did iOS 27.0.1 fix — and where is iOS 27.1?

Apple released iOS 27.0.1 on 28 September 2026. Its release notes name exactly three fixes:

  • iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may unexpectedly restart when Face ID fails to authenticate.
  • A color artifact may appear on photos captured at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48 on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max devices.
  • Opening Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously may cause the touchscreen to become unresponsive.

The notes say nothing about battery life, heat, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. As TechRepublic put it, three named fixes don’t mean iOS 27.0.1 resolves every bug.

iOS 27.1 fixes: why your iPhone won’t get 27.1

If you’re searching for iOS 27.1 fixes, here’s the twist. According to MacTrast (16 September 2026), Apple skipped a public 27.1 beta for existing iPhones because iOS 27.1 is the version that ships pre-installed on the iPhone Duo foldable, due on 23 October. Existing iPhones went straight to the iOS 27.2 beta instead, and the two code branches are expected to rejoin in iOS 27.3.

So for an iPhone 11 through iPhone 18 Pro Max, the next feature update after 27.0.x is expected to be iOS 27.2. Its beta adds Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, among other changes. Apple hasn’t given a public release date, and further 27.0.x bug-fix releases can arrive at any time.

Why iOS 27 battery drain is often temporary

After a major update your iPhone has a lot of invisible work to do. Apple’s own support document on battery after updates (published during the iOS 26 cycle, support.apple.com/en-us/125039) says that immediately after an update, “particularly a major release, you might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance. This is normal.” The reason it gives: the device is indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets and updating apps in the background.

iOS 27 adds a specific reason to expect this. As The Mac Observer points out, Apple’s iOS 26.6 notes said that update “optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27,” and Apple’s iOS 27 material says Spotlight, Photos and Mail search have been rebuilt. Rebuilding search indexes for tens of thousands of photos, messages and emails takes processor time, and processor time costs battery and generates heat.

The same Mac Observer round-up is clear about the limits: Apple has published nothing that predicts, measures or explains iOS 27 battery drain specifically, and no iOS 27 battery guidance page. So treat the first 48–72 hours as a settling period, but don’t ignore drain that persists after a week.

How to fix iOS 27 battery drain

Work through these in order. Each step is harmless and reversible.

  1. Install iOS 27.0.1 (or later). Go to Settings › General › Software Update. Bug-fix releases often include unlisted stability improvements.
  2. Give it time. Charge overnight on Wi-Fi for two to three nights before judging battery life.
  3. Find the culprit app. Open Settings › Battery and look at the last 24 hours and the last 10 days. An app with high “background” activity is the usual suspect. Update it from the App Store, or delete and reinstall it.
  4. Limit Background App Refresh. Settings › General › Background App Refresh. Turn it off for apps that don’t need fresh data when closed.
  5. Check Location Services. Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services. Switch apps from “Always” to “While Using”.
  6. Restart the iPhone. A simple restart clears stuck processes. This alone fixes many widget and animation glitches reported on iOS 27.
  7. Reset All Settings if drain persists after a week. Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings. This keeps your data but resets Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper and preferences.

Overnight drain in Airplane Mode, as some Cybernews readers describe, points to a process stuck in a loop rather than radio use. A restart plus an app update is the right first move. If it continues after a week, contact Apple Support and ask them to run diagnostics; they can see battery and process logs you can’t.

iOS 27 overheating: what’s normal and what isn’t

A phone that’s warm to the touch for the first day or two after updating is behaving as Apple describes. A phone that’s hot enough to show the temperature warning, dims the screen on its own, or refuses to charge past 80% is different.

Quick fixes for an iPhone running hot

  • Remove a thick case while charging and avoid charging under a pillow or in direct sun.
  • Use a certified charger and cable; cheap chargers run hot and can throttle.
  • Close camera, navigation and gaming apps, which are the heaviest users of processor and GPU.
  • Check Settings › Battery for a single app using an unusual share of power.

Some charging pauses at 80% are intentional. Optimized Battery Charging and the charge limit settings in Settings › Battery › Charging can hold the battery at 80% to reduce wear, and iOS will also pause charging when the battery is warm. That’s protection, not a bug.

iPhone keeps restarting on iOS 27? Do this

If your iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max restarted when Face ID failed, iOS 27.0.1 is the fix — install it. For other restarts, follow this sequence:

  1. Update to the latest iOS 27.0.x release.
  2. Check Analytics Data. Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements › Analytics Data. Repeated “panic-full” entries mean the system itself crashed. Apple Support can read them.
  3. Free up storage. Under about 5–10% free space, iOS struggles to finish background tasks. Check Settings › General › iPhone Storage.
  4. Remove recently added configuration profiles or VPN apps you don’t need, in Settings › General › VPN & Device Management.
  5. Back up and restore. If restarts continue, back up to iCloud or a computer, erase the phone and restore. This rules out corrupted settings.

Restarts that continue on a freshly restored iPhone point to hardware — commonly the battery, the logic board or a non-genuine replacement part. That’s the point to book a repair.

iOS 27 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues

During the summer beta, developers reported Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turning off intermittently on Apple’s Developer Forums (for example on iOS 27 beta 1). We haven’t found a widely reported, Apple-confirmed Wi-Fi or Bluetooth bug in the public release as of 3 October 2026. If you’re affected, these steps solve most connection problems:

  • Toggle and restart: turn Wi-Fi or Bluetooth off in Settings (not just Control Center, which only disconnects), restart the iPhone, then turn it back on.
  • Forget and rejoin: Settings › Wi-Fi › tap the ⓘ next to the network › Forget This Network. For Bluetooth, tap ⓘ › Forget This Device and pair again.
  • Check Private Wi-Fi Address: some routers and captive portals reject rotating addresses. Turn it to “Fixed” or “Off” for that network only.
  • Update accessories: AirPods, car systems and smartwatches often need their own firmware updates for a new iOS.
  • Reset Network Settings: Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. You’ll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords.

Check battery health and warranty before paying for a repair

An update can expose a tired battery. If drain continues after a week, open Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging (Settings › Battery › Battery Health on some models) and look at Maximum Capacity. Apple designs iPhone 15 and later batteries to keep about 80% of their original capacity at 1,000 full charge cycles, and iPhone 14 and earlier at 500 cycles. Below 80% you’ll see a service recommendation. Our battery health and parts history guide explains every message you might see.

Next, check whether the phone is still under warranty or AppleCare. A free All-in-one Basic Info check shows the model and basic warranty status from the IMEI or serial number. For repairs, previous replacement units and carrier policy, a full GSX report goes further — see how to read a GSX report.

When to contact Apple

  • Battery drain still severe more than a week after the update, after the steps above.
  • Restarts continue after a full restore.
  • The temperature warning appears in normal use.
  • Battery Health shows “Service” or the iPhone shows an Unknown Part message.

Use the Apple Support app, support.apple.com, or an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Ask them to run remote diagnostics before you pay for anything.

How to downgrade iOS 27 (and why you probably can’t)

You can only install an older iOS version while Apple is still “signing” it — that is, while Apple’s servers still approve that version for installation. According to iClarified, Apple stopped signing iOS 26.6.2 on 21 September 2026, and iOS 26.7 was released only as an over-the-air update without a restore file. Result: as of now, an iPhone already on iOS 27 cannot be downgraded to iOS 26 through Finder, iTunes or any legitimate method.

Ignore websites and tools that promise a downgrade or “unsigned” restore. They don’t work on current iPhones, and some bundle malware. If you’re still on iOS 26 and haven’t updated, you can stay there and install iOS 26.7, which Apple released on 14 September with roughly 80 security fixes, according to Macworld.

Should I update to iOS 27? Is iOS 27 safe?

Yes, iOS 27 is safe to install, and for most people the answer to “should I update to iOS 27” is yes — now that iOS 27.0.1 is out. Major releases carry the most complete set of security fixes: Macworld notes that iOS 26.7 includes fewer fixes than iOS 27 because of deep low-level changes in the new version.

  • Update now if you have an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max (iOS 27.0.1 fixes the Face ID restart), or if you want Siri AI on a supported model.
  • Waiting is reasonable if you rely on a work app, banking app or accessory that hasn’t confirmed iOS 27 support. Stay on iOS 26.7 in the meantime and keep it updated.
  • Before updating, back up to iCloud or a computer, free at least 10 GB of storage, and update on Wi-Fi with the phone on a charger.

Remember that once you’re on iOS 27, going back isn’t an option. If you’re buying a used iPhone, it will almost certainly arrive on iOS 27 already; check exactly which model you’re getting with a model, color and storage check and read our used iPhone buying checklist.

The bottom line

Most iOS 27 problems fall into two groups: genuine bugs, three of which iOS 27.0.1 fixed, and temporary post-update behavior from indexing and app updates. Install the latest update, give the phone a few nights on the charger, and use Settings › Battery to find any misbehaving app. If problems persist after a week and a restore, check battery health and warranty and let Apple diagnose the hardware. For older iPhones and the full support list, see our iOS 27 and macOS 27 overview.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my battery draining so fast after iOS 27?

After a major update your iPhone re-indexes photos, messages and mail and updates apps in the background, which Apple says can temporarily affect battery life and heat. Charge overnight on Wi-Fi for two or three nights; if drain continues after a week, check Settings › Battery for a misbehaving app.

What did iOS 27.0.1 fix?

iOS 27.0.1, released 28 September 2026, fixed restarts on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max when Face ID fails, a color artifact in some 2x photos at f/1.48, and a touchscreen freeze when opening Notification Center and Control Center together.

Will my iPhone get iOS 27.1?

Reportedly not. According to MacTrast, iOS 27.1 ships only on the iPhone Duo, while existing iPhones moved straight to the iOS 27.2 beta. Bug-fix releases like 27.0.1 still arrive in the meantime.

Can I downgrade from iOS 27 to iOS 26?

Not anymore. Apple stopped signing iOS 26.6.2 on 21 September 2026 and iOS 26.7 has no restore file, so there is no legitimate way to downgrade an iPhone already on iOS 27.

Is iOS 27 safe to install?

Yes. iOS 27 contains the most complete set of Apple security fixes. If an essential app isn’t ready yet, you can stay on iOS 26.7, which still receives security updates.

Why does my iPhone keep restarting after iOS 27?

On iPhone 18 Pro models, a Face ID bug caused restarts and is fixed in iOS 27.0.1. On other models, update, free up storage and restore from backup; if restarts continue, the battery or another part may be faulty.

How do I check if my iPhone battery needs replacing?

Go to Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging. Below 80% maximum capacity Apple recommends service. A warranty check on the IMEI tells you whether the replacement may be covered.
