Xiaomi 17 Ultra Problems: Zoom Ring, HyperOS 4, Battery Fixes
Xiaomi 17 Ultra problems and fixes: loose Leica zoom ring, HyperOS 4 update timing, overheating, battery drain, camera bugs and China ROM import risks.

Turn the ring around the camera on a new Leica Edition and it should click smoothly through the zoom range. On some early units it wobbles instead. That loose ring is the most visible of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra problems owners have raised, but the more common headaches come from where the phone was bought. Lots of people imported theirs from China or Hong Kong to get it sooner or cheaper, and that affects updates, Google apps and warranty.
Heat, battery drain and a camera lag bug round out the list, along with the question everyone asks: when does HyperOS 4 arrive?
The Leica zoom ring that wobbles
On the Leica / Leitzphone Edition, the mechanical ring that controls zoom can feel loose, show visible play, or fail to move the zoom precisely. Owners posted videos of it on Chinese social media. The Spanish site Teknofilo reported on 31 December 2025 that it shows up in some early batches and isn’t widespread. A Hong Kong buyer reported a perfectly good unit, which points to quality control rather than a design flaw. Image quality isn’t affected.
Check it the day the phone arrives:
- Open the camera and turn the ring slowly through its full range. Zoom should follow without jumps.
- Feel gently for side-to-side wobble. A ring that rattles or moves off-axis is a defect.
- Film a short clip of it as evidence.
- Ask the seller for a replacement or refund straight away. Import shops often give only a one-year warranty and weaker return rights than a local store.
- Don’t try to open or tighten it yourself. That voids whatever warranty you have.
Bought it from China? What the China ROM means for you
A phone from mainland China runs the China ROM. It gets HyperOS updates first, which is the upside. The downsides for buyers elsewhere:
- No Google setup out of the box. Google apps aren’t preinstalled, and things like Google Wallet may not fully work.
- China builds only. It won’t get global updates, and the language options, app store and features are aimed at China.
- Reseller ROMs. Some sellers flash a modified “global” ROM onto China units. Those can stop getting official updates and may not be Play Protect certified. Our Play Protect certification guide shows how to check.
- Bands and warranty. Make sure the 4G and 5G bands suit your carrier. Xiaomi service in your country may not cover an imported unit.
A mix of Chinese and English in Settings, apps you didn’t expect, or a ROM version that doesn’t match the region are all reasons to ask questions before paying. How the chip compares with rivals is in our guide to the newest flagship chips.
HyperOS 4: China now, global later
HyperOS 4, based on Android 17, began rolling out in China on 15 October 2026. According to Gagadget’s report on Xiaomi’s published schedule, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra (Leica Edition included) is in the first wave with the 17 Pro Max, 17 Pro and 17. Wave 2 follows by the end of October, and older series get it through December and January 2027.
Outside China there are no stable dates yet. Global beta recruitment opened on 10 September. Going by past releases, global builds tend to land four to six weeks after China, but that’s an estimate. Xiaomi itself says timelines are approximate and that the same model can get an update weeks apart in different regions.
To check: Settings › About phone, tap the HyperOS version card, then Check for updates. The Xiaomi Community app has an update status section listing which builds are rolling out for your model and region. Charge to at least 50% and use Wi-Fi before installing, and expect two or three days of extra heat and drain afterwards while the phone re-optimises.
Camera lag and freezing (fixed in HyperOS 3)
Early software made the camera lag and freeze. Russian site iChip reported on 15 June 2026 that Xiaomi’s weekly bug report said HyperOS 3 updates fixed camera lag and freezing on the 17 Ultra, citing build HyperOS 3.0.306.0, and fixed excessive heating in some situations on the 17 Pro Max.
If yours still stutters:
- Update to the latest HyperOS build, and update the camera app if it offers one.
- Clear the camera cache in Settings › Apps › Manage apps › Camera › Storage › Clear cache. Leave Clear data alone unless you don’t mind losing camera settings.
- Take off a thick case or magnetic accessory that might interfere with the lenses or stabilisation.
One lens that shows black, shakes or buzzes after an update and restart is a hardware fault.
Heat and battery drain
Long 4K or 8K recording, the zoom camera, gaming and fast charging all make heat, and a big update adds background work on top. Xiaomi’s own advice is to lower game settings, close background apps and not game while charging. In practice:
- Install the newest HyperOS update, restart, and update all your apps.
- Drop the resolution or frame rate for long videos.
- Take the case off while charging or recording for a long time, and don’t play or film on the charger.
- In Settings › Battery, look for apps that used a lot while the screen was off.
- For apps that don’t need to run in the background, open Settings › Apps › Manage apps › [app], turn off Autostart, and set battery saver to Restrict background activity.
- Lower the refresh rate in Settings › Display & brightness if you don’t need the top setting.
- On a China ROM with Google services added afterwards, Google apps can misbehave and keep the phone awake. See whether Google Play services sits near the top of the battery list.
Hot while idle and unplugged, or drain that hasn’t improved after a week on the same build? Run Xiaomi’s hardware diagnostics and ask service to check battery health.
Faults software won’t fix
- A zoom ring with play, a camera module that rattles, buttons that stick.
- One camera that’s black, buzzes or shakes in every app, even after an update and restart.
- Shutdowns at a sensible charge level, heat while idle and unplugged, a back panel that bulges.
- Lines, a green tint or dead touch areas that survive a restart.
Before handing it over, back up, note the exact HyperOS build and the date the problem started, and sign out of your Xiaomi and Google accounts only if service asks. Imported phone? Contact the seller first. Many import shops handle claims by shipping the phone back to China, which can take weeks. A phone bought locally from Xiaomi or an authorised retailer usually gets repaired much faster.
Checks before buying a used 17 Ultra
- Make sure the seller has signed out of their Xiaomi account and Find Device is off. Our Mi Account check guide shows where to look.
- Run a Xiaomi IMEI check for model, region and warranty, and a GSMA blacklist check.
- Turn the zoom ring end to end, try every lens, and record a few seconds of video while walking to test stabilisation.
- Read the HyperOS version and region in Settings › About phone, and compare it with what the listing says.
Frequently asked questions
Is the zoom ring problem common?
No. Teknofilo reported it in some early Leica / Leitzphone Edition batches, and other buyers have working units. Check the ring on arrival and return the phone if it’s loose.
When does the Xiaomi 17 Ultra get HyperOS 4?
It began rolling out in China on 15 October 2026 with the 17 Ultra in the first wave. Global stable builds haven’t been dated; past patterns suggest a few weeks after China.
How do I check my HyperOS update status?
Settings › About phone, tap the HyperOS version and check for updates, or look at the update status section in the Xiaomi Community app.
Can I use Google apps on a China ROM unit?
China ROMs don’t come with Google services set up, and some features may not fully work. The global version avoids that.
