Pixel 6 end of support has arrived: the October 2026 Pixel update, which began rolling out on 6 October, is very likely the last software and security update the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will receive. Both phones launched in October 2021 with a promise of five years of updates, and that window has now closed. Your phone will keep working, but from here on it will not get new security fixes — which matters for banking, payments and anything you’d rather keep private.

This guide covers what the final update includes, the build numbers for each model, what end of support actually means day to day, when other older Pixels lose support, whether a used Pixel 6 is still worth buying, and what to upgrade to. Information is current as of 9 October 2026.

Is the October 2026 update the last one for the Pixel 6?

Almost certainly. Google committed to five years of updates for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which runs out this month, and Droid Life reported back in July that October 2026 would mark the end of life. Notebookcheck described the October release as “what is likely their final update”, and Android Authority said it does not expect a November update for the Pixel 6. Google itself has not issued a separate statement confirming that no further update will ever ship, so we describe it as the expected final update rather than a guaranteed one. In rare cases manufacturers have pushed an extra fix after end of support, but you should not plan around that.

The update brings the Pixel 6 the October 2026 Android 17 security patch. 9to5Google reported that the October patch fixes 28 issues in Android plus 6 more in the Pixel-specific bulletin. Sources differ slightly on the exact patch-level date shown on the phone (9to5Google lists 2026-10-01; Notebookcheck mentions 5 October), so the safest description is simply “the October 2026 patch”.

October 2026 Pixel update build numbers by model

To confirm you have the final update, compare your build number with this table, based on 9to5Google’s report:

ModelOctober 2026 buildSupport status
Pixel 6CP3A.261005.002.A1Final expected update
Pixel 6 ProCP3A.261005.002.A1Final expected update
Pixel 6aCP3A.261005.002.A1Supported until July 2027
Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel FoldCP3A.261005.002.A1Still supported
Pixel 8 series through Pixel 10aCP3A.261005.005Still supported
Pixel 11 seriesCD1A.261005.003Still supported

The October release also fixes some bugs on newer models — a keyboard that did not appear in search fields and distorted VoIP ringtones on the Pixel 8 and later, and photos saved in the wrong orientation on the Pixel 11 — but those fixes do not apply to the Pixel 6.

How to install the final update on a Pixel 6

  1. Open Settings › System › Software updates and tap System update.
  2. If the October 2026 update is waiting, download and install it, then restart.
  3. Go to Settings › About phone and tap Android version to see the security update date and build number.
  4. Also check Google Play system update on the same screen; Play system components are updated separately.

Install it even if you plan to replace the phone soon. It is the most secure state your Pixel 6 will ever be in.

What does end of support mean for a Pixel 6?

End of support does not switch your phone off. Calls, texts, the camera and your apps will keep working tomorrow just as they do today. What stops is the flow of fixes.

Security

Every month, Google publishes fixes for newly discovered vulnerabilities in Android and Pixel components. The October bulletin alone covered 34 issues across Android and Pixel. From November, any new flaws found in the software your Pixel 6 runs will stay unpatched on your phone. Over time, that gap only grows. The risk is highest if you install apps from outside the Play Store, open unknown links, or use the phone for sensitive work. If you suspect something is already wrong, our guide on how to tell if your phone is hacked explains the signs.

Banking and payment apps

Banking, payment and some workplace apps may eventually require a more recent security patch level or Android version. That rarely happens the month support ends, but it becomes more likely over the following year or two. When an app drops support, you typically see a message asking you to update your device. If your bank or employer app is essential, plan your upgrade before that point rather than after.

App updates and features

The Pixel 6 is on Android 17 with this update, which is a recent version, so most Play Store apps will continue to install and update for some time. You will not receive future Android versions or new Pixel features, though.

Resale value

End of support usually pushes used prices down, because buyers know the phone will not get more security fixes. If you plan to sell your Pixel 6, sooner is generally better than later. Before you sell, follow our backup and wipe guide and remove your Google account so the buyer isn’t stuck behind Factory Reset Protection.

When does support end for other Pixel phones?

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are the first of the Tensor-era Pixels to reach the end. Here is what we can confirm as of 9 October 2026:

ModelLaunchedEnd of updates
Pixel 6 / 6 ProOctober 2021October 2026 (expected final update)
Pixel 6a2022July 2027
Pixel 7 series and newer2022 onwardStill supported — check Google’s Pixel update page for each model’s date

Google publishes a guaranteed update date for every Pixel on its support site. Newer generations were sold with longer promises than the Pixel 6, which is one reason a slightly newer used Pixel can be much better value. For the latest generation, see our piece on the Pixel 11, Tensor G6 and Titan M3.

Is the Pixel 6 still safe to use?

For now, yes, with sensible precautions. A phone that received its last patch in October 2026 is reasonably current today. The risk grows month by month as new vulnerabilities are published and left unfixed. If you keep using a Pixel 6, reduce your exposure:

  • Install the October 2026 update and keep your apps updated through the Play Store.
  • Only install apps from the Play Store and keep Google Play Protect turned on.
  • Be cautious with links in texts and emails — phishing is a bigger threat than exotic exploits for most people.
  • Use a strong screen lock and keep two-factor authentication on for important accounts.
  • Consider moving banking, payments and work accounts to a supported device first.

Should you buy a used Pixel 6 in 2026?

For most buyers, no — unless it is very cheap and you understand what you’re getting. A used Pixel 6 or 6 Pro now comes with no future security updates, so it is best treated as a secondary phone, a phone for a child who mainly uses Wi-Fi apps, or a spare. Paying anything close to the price of a supported model makes little sense.

If you’re comparing older Pixels, the Pixel 6a is the same generation but supported until July 2027, and the Pixel 7 series and later still receive updates. Spending a bit more for a supported model usually gives you more years of safe use per dollar.

How to check a used Pixel’s model and status before buying

Because end of support depends on the exact model, the first job is to confirm what you’re actually buying. A listing that says “Pixel 6 Pro” might be a Pixel 6, and a “Pixel 7” could turn out to be a 6. Do this before you pay:

  1. Get the IMEI. Dial *#06# or open Settings › About phone. Our guide on finding an IMEI number covers every method.
  2. Confirm the model. Run a Google Pixel info check to confirm the exact model and details tied to that IMEI, or start with the free All-in-one basic info check.
  3. Check the blacklist. A GSMA blacklist check reveals whether the phone has been reported lost or stolen. See how to check if a phone is stolen.
  4. Check the carrier lock. A carrier and SIM-lock check shows whether it is tied to a network — common with Pixels sold through US carriers.
  5. Check the update status on the phone. Settings › About phone › Android version shows the security patch date and build number. Compare it with the table above.
  6. Watch the reset. The seller should remove their Google account and factory-reset the phone in front of you.
Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

What to upgrade to from a Pixel 6

If you like the Pixel experience, the obvious upgrades are newer Pixels. During this week’s Prime Big Deal Days, TechRadar’s US deals coverage listed the Pixel 11 at $749 (from $899) and the Pixel 11 Pro at $849 (from $1,099.99) — check whether those prices are still live before you buy. Note that the Pixel 10a now costs $599 on the US Google Store, up from $499, as part of the wider 2026 phone price increase.

  • Best value new Pixel: the Pixel 11 on sale, or the Pixel 10a if you want a smaller budget.
  • Best used option: a checked Pixel 8 or newer, which runs the latest build line and has more support left than the Pixel 6.
  • Switching to Samsung: the Galaxy S26 FE kept its $699.99 price and comes with seven OS upgrades and seven years of patches. Our used Galaxy model guide covers older options.
  • Switching to iPhone: follow our used iPhone checklist if you buy second-hand.

What to do now

  • Pixel 6 owners: install the October 2026 update today, then plan an upgrade within the next year, especially if you use banking apps.
  • Pixel 6a owners: you have until July 2027; no rush, but budget for it.
  • Selling a Pixel 6: sell sooner rather than later, and remove your Google account before handing it over.
  • Buying used: skip the Pixel 6 unless it’s very cheap, and always verify the model, blacklist and carrier status first.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Pixel 6 stop getting updates?

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launched in October 2021 with five years of updates, so support ends in October 2026. The October 2026 update is expected to be the last.

What is the last Pixel 6 build number?

The October 2026 update for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro is build CP3A.261005.002.A1, with the October 2026 security patch.

Will the Pixel 6 get a November 2026 update?

It isn’t expected. Android Authority said it does not anticipate a November update for the Pixel 6, though Google has not published a separate statement.

When does the Pixel 6a lose support?

The Pixel 6a is supported until July 2027, nine months longer than the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

Can I still use my Pixel 6 after end of support?

Yes. The phone keeps working, but it no longer receives security fixes, so the risk grows over time and some banking or work apps may eventually stop supporting it.

Is a used Pixel 6 worth buying in 2026?

How can I check which Pixel model I’m buying?

Ask for the IMEI and run a Google Pixel info check, then compare the model and build number in Settings › About phone with the listing.
