2026 has been a big year for phone and laptop software outside Apple. Here are the releases that matter, and the security changes that affect anyone buying or selling a device.
Android 17: tougher on thieves and scammers
Android 17 reached Pixels on 16 June 2026. Its most important changes are about security:
- Theft protection on by default: Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock are switched on for new devices, and “Mark as lost” can require your fingerprint or face.
- Far fewer PIN guesses: 6 tries in the first minute (down from 10) and only 19 attempts in total over five years (down from about 1,800). Brute-forcing a stolen phone’s PIN is effectively over.
- Advanced Protection mode: Google’s one-switch “maximum security” setting now blocks non-accessibility apps from abusing accessibility services, turns off device-to-device unlock and Chrome WebGPU, and adds scam detection for chat notifications.
- Lockdown improvements: it can hide Quick Settings and block Wi-Fi and Bluetooth changes.
Android 17 QPR1 arrived with the September Pixel Drop (15 September), and QPR2 is expected in December.
Samsung One UI 9
One UI 8.5 launched with the Galaxy S26 in February. One UI 9 (Android 17) shipped first on the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8 in July, and began rolling out to the Galaxy S26 in Europe and Asia on 16 September, with Canada and Singapore following; a US date hasn’t been announced. It adds generative Now Brief cards, a Warranty & Care section and clearer security and privacy alerts.
Xiaomi HyperOS 4 and others
- Xiaomi HyperOS 4 (Android 17) — stable rollout in China starts 15 October 2026 with the Xiaomi 17 and Redmi K100, then more devices through January 2027.
- OPPO ColorOS 17, vivo OriginOS 7, Honor MagicOS 11 — all Android 17-based, launched on the new flagships in September.
- Huawei HarmonyOS 6.1 — released in April 2026; HarmonyOS 6 is on more than 60 million devices.
Windows: 26H2 and more time for Windows 10
- Windows 11 26H2 arrived on 29 September 2026 as a small enablement update for PCs on 24H2 or 25H2. It adds an AI agent in Settings, an NPU monitor in Task Manager, better Narrator descriptions and Start menu and taskbar personalization.
- Windows 11 26H1 (February) exists only for new Snapdragon X2 laptops.
- Windows 10 left mainstream support on 14 October 2025, but Microsoft extended consumer Extended Security Updates to 12 October 2027 — $30, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or free in the EEA with a Microsoft account.
- There is no Windows 12; reports of a 2026 launch were wrong.
Android on laptops: Googlebook
At The Android Show on 12 May 2026, Google unveiled Googlebook — Android-based laptops with Gemini built in, developed under the codename “Aluminium OS”. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo are reported partners. ChromeOS continues alongside it, mainly for schools and businesses.
2026’s actively exploited phone bugs
- June’s Android bulletin fixed a Framework privilege-escalation flaw in Android 14–16 that was under limited, targeted attack.
- September’s Pixel update fixed a zero-click modem flaw being exploited in targeted attacks, among more than 100 fixes.
- GSMA blacklist check for any brand.
- Samsung, Pixel and Xiaomi checks for model, region and lock status.
