Every day thousands of stolen phones are resold on marketplaces, social media and in busy phone markets. They often look perfect: a clean screen, a working camera, a seller with a believable story. Then, a week later, the phone stops connecting to the network — or an iPhone asks for someone else’s Apple ID after an update. The money is gone.

The good news: a stolen phone almost always leaves a trace in official records. In this guide you’ll learn exactly what to check, how to do it in under a minute, and what each result means.

Four steps, under a minute: the safest way to buy a used phone.

Step 1: Get the real IMEI from the phone itself

Every phone has a unique 15-digit IMEI number. Don’t trust the number printed on a box or written in a chat — boxes get swapped. Ask the seller to dial *#06# in front of you. The IMEI appears instantly on any phone, iPhone or Android.

  • iPhone: Settings › General › About — scroll to IMEI. It should match *#06# and the SIM tray.
  • Android: Settings › About phone › Status (or “IMEI information”).
  • Dual-SIM phones show two IMEIs — either one works for checking.

Before you go further, make sure the number is even valid. Paste it below — this tool checks the IMEI’s built-in check digit right in your browser:

Step 2: Check the blacklist status

When a phone is reported lost or stolen, the network operator adds its IMEI to the worldwide GSMA blacklist. Networks that share the list can block the phone, so it may stop working on your SIM — sometimes immediately, sometimes weeks later.

Run a GSMA blacklist check to see one of three results:

  • Clean — no lost or stolen report on this IMEI.
  • Blacklisted / Barred — reported lost, stolen or involved in fraud. Do not buy.
  • Financed / unpaid (US carriers) — the original owner still owes money. Use the USA blacklist / barred check for US phones.

Step 3: For iPhones, check iCloud / Find My

A stolen iPhone is usually still signed in to its owner’s Apple ID. That’s Activation Lock: after a reset, the phone asks for the original Apple ID and password, and without them it’s just an expensive paperweight.

Check whether Find My is ON or OFF with the Model + Find My check or the All-in-one Basic Info report, which also shows the model, colour and storage so you can confirm the phone is what the seller claims. Learn more in our guide to Activation Lock.

Step 4: Confirm the model, carrier and SIM-lock

Thieves often sell phones as “factory unlocked” when they’re actually locked to a foreign carrier. A carrier + SIM-lock check tells you which network the phone is locked to and whether it will accept your SIM. For Samsung, use the Samsung Info report to see the exact model, region and warranty.

Red flags that a phone may be stolen

  • The seller refuses to let you dial *#06# or see Settings › About.
  • The price is far below the market price for that model.
  • The phone is “locked but they forgot the password” or “just needs an iCloud bypass”.
  • No box, no receipt and a rushed meeting in a public place.
  • Find My is ON and the seller won’t sign out in front of you.
  • The screen shows a “Lost Mode” message or a contact number.

Android phones: check the Google account lock too

Android has its own version of Activation Lock called Factory Reset Protection (FRP). If a phone is reset without first removing the owner’s Google account, it asks for that account’s email and password during setup. Samsung phones can add a second lock with the Samsung account, and Xiaomi phones have the Mi Account.

  • Open Settings › Accounts (or “Passwords & accounts”). The phone you buy should have no previous owner’s Google, Samsung or Mi account on it.
  • Ask the seller to remove their accounts and factory reset the phone while you watch. Then set it up with your own account before you pay.
  • For Xiaomi, read our Mi Account lock guide; for Samsung, see how to check a used Samsung.

Buying from a seller in another city or country

When you can’t hold the phone in your hands, the checks matter even more — and the IMEI is all you need. Ask the seller for a short video showing *#06# on the screen and the Settings › General › About page in one take, so you know the number really belongs to that phone. Then run the checks yourself; never accept a screenshot of a “clean report” from the seller, because those are easy to fake.

Pay only through a method that protects you, and agree in writing that the phone must arrive with the same IMEI. When it arrives, dial *#06# again and compare.

What to bring when you meet the seller

  • Your own SIM card — to test calls, mobile data and whether the phone is SIM-locked.
  • A charger or power bank — a phone with a “dead battery” can’t show you its Settings.
  • Your phone with internet — so you can run the checks on the spot in under a minute.
  • Time — a genuine seller is happy to wait while you check. A rushed seller is a warning sign.

What to do if the phone turns out to be stolen

Don’t confront the seller. Leave politely and report the listing to the marketplace. If you already paid, contact your local police with the IMEI and the chat history — and read our guide on how stolen phones are reported and blocked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check if a phone is stolen for free?

Yes. Your first All-in-one check on iSerial is free, and you can validate any IMEI number for free with the tool on this page. Full blacklist and carrier reports start from a few cents.

Does a clean IMEI mean the phone is not stolen?

Not always. A clean result means no theft was reported to the network. For iPhones, also check that Find My (iCloud) is OFF.

Can a stolen phone be used with a new SIM?

If its IMEI is blacklisted, networks that share the GSMA list can block it. An iCloud-locked iPhone cannot be activated at all without the owner’s Apple ID.

Is checking an IMEI legal?

Yes. An IMEI check only reads device records; it does not change anything on the phone or reveal personal data about the owner.
