The phone is face-down on the bedside table, Glyph Interface switched off, and one strip of light on the back is still glowing. You restart it, the light goes out, and two days later it’s back. That stuck Glyph segment is the best-known of the Nothing Phone (3a) problems, and it affects the (3a) Pro too. Owners have also reported freezes when plugging in USB headphones, a buzz on some chargers, Gallery videos that won’t play, and battery drain after updates.

All of these are software, or at least start out looking like it. Before trying anything below, install the newest build from Settings › System › System update. Nothing releases updates in stages, so a friend’s phone may get one days before yours. Expect some warmth and extra battery use while an update installs.

The Glyph strip that won’t switch off

One segment on the back stays lit even with the Glyph Interface off or the phone face-down at night. A restart clears it, usually not for long.

Android Authority reported in October 2025 that it began after the September 2025 update, on both the (3a) and (3a) Pro. Some owners connected it to Essential Recorder. Others saw it during calls or at a particular time of day. One user who contacted Nothing India Support was told it was a known issue on the (3a) Pro and that a fix was being worked on for an upcoming software update.

What owners have had luck with:

  1. Restart. The one thing that works for nearly everyone, but only for a while.
  2. Start and stop a recording from the Essential Recorder Quick Settings tile. That resets the light for some people.
  3. Clear Essential Recorder’s cache and data: Settings › Apps › See all apps › Essential Recorder (or Recorder) › Storage › Clear cache, then Clear storage. Recordings saved elsewhere are safe, but back up any you need first.
  4. Switch off Glyph progress for Google Calendar in Settings › Glyph Interface.
  5. Install each Nothing OS update as soon as it shows up.

Nothing support has suggested a service centre visit if none of that helps, where technicians may apply a temporary fix.

Freezes and buzzing around the USB-C port

Plugging in headphones locks the phone up

Some owners say the phone freezes the instant they plug in USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter. According to ChannelNews, Nothing’s 2025 updates listed a fix for a system freeze when connecting USB headphones, so updating comes first.

  1. Install the latest Nothing OS release.
  2. Try another USB-C audio adapter. Cheap passive ones can confuse the port’s accessory detection.
  3. Plug in while the phone is unlocked on the home screen, not mid-call.
  4. If it freezes, hold Power + Volume Up for about 10 seconds to force a restart.
  5. Test in Safe Mode (long-press Restart in the power menu) to rule out third-party audio apps or equalisers.

A whine or crackle while charging

Buzzing, whining, crackling or interference on calls while charging is nearly always electrical noise from the charger, not a fault in the phone. ChannelNews reported that a 2025 update dealt with noise caused by certain third-party chargers. Update the phone, then switch to a USB-C Power Delivery charger from a reputable brand, rated for the fast-charging speed on Nothing’s spec page. Try another cable and another wall socket, because poor earthing can cause it too. Cheap multi-port car chargers are a common source during calls.

Different story if the phone itself gets very hot, the charging indicator flickers, or it only charges when the cable sits at a certain angle. That suggests a damaged USB-C port, which is a repair job.

Some owners found videos wouldn’t play, or stuttered, in the built-in Gallery app. Nothing has shipped Gallery playback fixes in its updates.

  1. Update the system, and check the Play Store for app updates.
  2. Clear Gallery’s cache: Settings › Apps › Gallery › Storage › Clear cache.
  3. Open the same file in Google Photos or VLC. If it plays there, the file is fine and Gallery is the problem.
  4. Videos from another phone may use a codec Gallery doesn’t support. Convert the file or use another player.

Battery running down faster than it should

After an update, leave it 48 hours while apps are re-optimised before you worry. Then:

  • Check Settings › Battery › Battery usage for apps using more than they should.
  • Look at the back in a dark room. A stuck Glyph segment is a quiet drain.
  • Turn off Always-on display and lower the refresh rate in Settings › Display if you need more hours.
  • Restrict apps you rarely open: Settings › Apps › [app] › Battery › Restricted.

Safe Mode first, factory reset last

If trouble began right after installing something, like a launcher, call recorder, equaliser or battery “cleaner”, Safe Mode is the quick test. Hold the power button (or Power + Volume Up, depending on your settings), then touch and hold Restart until the Safe Mode prompt appears. Only Nothing’s built-in apps run there. If the freeze, noise or drain goes away, remove recent apps one at a time.

A factory reset (Settings › System › Reset options › Erase all data) is the final software step. Before you do it:

  • Back up photos, chats and 2FA apps, and make sure the backup actually finished.
  • Write down the Google account and password on the phone. Factory Reset Protection will ask for them at setup.
  • Charge to more than 50%.

If the bug comes back on a freshly reset phone before you’ve restored any apps, it’s a system bug or hardware. Tell Nothing support exactly that.

Sending Nothing a bug report, or booking a repair

Nothing uses bug reports to decide what to fix first. Go to Settings › System › Feedback, describe what happens and when it started, and attach a screenshot or screen recording. The community forum is another route. Our guide to Android hidden diagnostic codes shows how to test the screen, speakers and sensors yourself first, so you can tell support what you’ve ruled out.

Software can’t fix a loose USB-C port, a Glyph segment that’s physically dead, a speaker that crackles at every volume or a swelling battery. If a fault survives updating and a reset, contact Nothing support or an authorised service centre while you’re still in warranty.

Checking a second-hand (3a) or (3a) Pro

Used units are easy to find. Before paying:

  • Run a manufacturer and model check to confirm it’s a genuine (3a) or (3a) Pro and the IMEI matches the box.
  • Check the IMEI against the GSMA blacklist for lost or stolen reports.
  • Make sure it’s Play Protect certified, a sign the software hasn’t been tampered with.
  • Light up the Glyphs, plug in USB-C headphones, charge it, and try every camera.
  • Watch the seller remove their Google account.
Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.
