Twenty minutes into a demanding game, the back of the phone is hot, the frame rate dips and the screen dims by itself. Heat is the POCO F7 Pro problem people search for most. Close behind are warmth around the charging port, a touchscreen that sometimes ignores you until you restart, and battery drain.

Most of it comes from flagship hardware squeezed into a mid-range phone. The F7 Pro launched globally in March 2025 with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a 6.67-inch 2K (WQHD+) AMOLED display at up to 120Hz, a 6,000mAh battery and 90W HyperCharge. The standard POCO F7, which arrived later in 2025 with a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, gets several of the same heat complaints, so the advice here applies to it too.

Xiaomi has published support answers for nearly every one of these issues, which few brands do. Here’s what it says, with a few extra checks added.

What Xiaomi says causes each problem

Hot and throttling in games

Xiaomi’s own FAQ says the F7 Pro heats up in large games because the high frame rates and 2K resolution draw more power. A Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 running flat out in a slim body will always get hot, and the phone throttles to protect itself. Another Xiaomi answer says some games have a bug that raises power use and heat the first time you play, and that fully closing and reopening the game puts things back to normal.

  1. Turn down the in-game graphics or the frame-rate cap. Coming down from the top preset often cuts the heat a lot, and you’ll barely see the difference.
  2. Do what Xiaomi suggests: switch off game acceleration in Game Turbo and put the phone in balanced mode in Settings › Battery.
  3. Close background apps you don’t need before you start.
  4. Play somewhere cool, take a thick case off for long sessions, and don’t play on the charger.
  5. If a game heats the phone on first launch, close it completely from Recents and open it again.
  6. Keep HyperOS and the game updated. Xiaomi says software updates include heat optimisations.

Warm while charging, and a hot port

Expect the phone to get noticeably warm in the first part of a charge, and to charge more slowly once it’s hot. Xiaomi’s FAQ for the POCO F7 says fast charging speeds things up and causes heat, and that the temperature rise stays within the safe range. The F7 Pro’s 90W HyperCharge works the same way: fastest when the battery is low, slower as it warms up or fills.

  • Use the original 90W adapter and cable. Xiaomi warns that non-standard adapters can affect charging safety and cause heating.
  • Leave games, video calls and navigation until it’s done.
  • Charge on a hard surface, not a bed or sofa, and take the case off if it gets hot.
  • Look in Settings › Battery for battery protection or smart charging options that stop at around 80% overnight.

Xiaomi also has a support page just for warmth around the lower charging port area and the screen. It calls slight screen warmth during high-definition, high-refresh-rate or high-brightness use normal for a 2K, up-to-120Hz panel, and recommends three changes:

  1. Drop the refresh rate in Settings › Display & brightness › Refresh rate › Custom to 60Hz.
  2. Turn on Automatic brightness in Settings › Display & brightness.
  3. Lower the resolution from WQHD+ to FHD+ in the display settings.

If the USB-C port itself is hot to the touch while charging, shine a torch into it. Lint or grit can stop the plug seating fully and create resistance. Clean it gently with a wooden toothpick, never anything metal, and try another certified cable. A port that gets very hot, smells of burning or looks discoloured needs service. Stop charging it.

Part of the screen stops responding

A patch of the screen stops reacting, taps get missed mid-game, and a restart brings it back. Xiaomi’s support answer for a “partially insensitive” F7 Pro screen that needs a restart says the phone passes strict inspection before it leaves the factory. It puts the problem down to overheating, or background apps using too many resources.

  1. Close apps you don’t need and let a warm phone cool down.
  2. Cut back on long gaming sessions and using the phone on the charger.
  3. Update the software in Settings › About phone. Xiaomi says updates include optimisations for this.
  4. Take off a thick or crooked screen protector and test again. Bad protectors cause dead zones all the time.
  5. Run the hardware test. Dial *#*#6484#*#* to open the CIT menu and use the touch test to see whether the dead area is always in the same place. Our Android hidden diagnostic codes guide explains these menus.
  6. If the same spot fails the CIT test while the phone is cool, it’s a hardware fault. Book a warranty repair.

Getting a full day from 6,000mAh

That battery should last a day comfortably. A 2K screen at 120Hz and busy background apps are what shorten it.

  • Look in Settings › Battery for apps with heavy background use and restrict their background activity.
  • The 60Hz and FHD+ changes above help battery as much as heat.
  • Turn off the always-on display if you don’t use it.
  • After a major HyperOS update, give it a few days to re-optimise before you judge.
  • Battery health clearly down on a phone still under warranty? Contact Xiaomi support.

Taking it to Xiaomi service

Book a repair if the phone gets hot while idle, the touchscreen fails in the same place in the CIT test, the port overheats with the original charger, or the battery swells.

  1. Find your proof of purchase.
  2. Run an Xiaomi check on the IMEI to confirm the warranty period and original sales region.
  3. Back up the phone.
  4. Sign out of your Xiaomi account only when the service centre asks you to.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my POCO F7 Pro heat up when gaming?

Xiaomi says the 2K resolution and high frame rates draw more power in large games. Lower the game settings, use balanced mode and don’t play while charging.

Is it normal for the POCO F7 Pro to get hot while charging?

Some warmth is normal with 90W fast charging, and Xiaomi says it stays within a safe range. Use the original adapter and keep heavy use for after it’s charged.

Why is my POCO F7 Pro touch not working until I restart?

Xiaomi links it to overheating or apps using too many resources. Close apps, let it cool and install the latest update.

How do I test the POCO F7 Pro touchscreen?

Dial *#*#6484#*#* to open the CIT hardware test menu and run the touch test.
