You pick up a Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro, turn it over and see a pale line across the back glass. Is it a scratch? Half the iPhone 17 Pro problems people search for start with that question, and the other half start with a call that drops while the status bar still shows full bars.
Both have explanations. Some have a fix, some don’t. And because Apple.com stopped selling the 17 Pro when the iPhone 18 Pro arrived, more of these phones are now changing hands through carriers, refurbishers and private sellers. JP Morgan analysts, as reported by GSMArena on 12 October 2026, say the 17 Pro generation is still selling strongly in those channels. So the problems below matter to owners and to anyone about to buy one.
Scratchgate: is it a scratch or just a mark?
Within days of the September 2025 launch, demo units and brand-new phones showed light marks on the back glass and scuffs on the raised camera plateau. The darker Deep Blue finish showed it most. Social media called it “Scratchgate”.
It turned out to be two separate things.
The marks on many demo units were, according to Apple, mostly material rubbed off worn MagSafe display stands, not scratches in the glass. Tom’s Guide reported that Apple quietly swapped those stands in its stores. Those marks usually wipe away.
The second issue is real damage. iFixit looked at the forged aluminium camera plateau and found the anodised layer doesn’t bond as well on its sharp edges (Tom’s Guide reported the analysis). A knock or a drop can chip it down to bare metal. BGR added that drop damage around the camera and dents in the aluminium frame can’t be repaired cosmetically.
What you can do about it:
- Wipe the back with a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water. If the line disappears, it was transfer.
- Put the phone in a case with a raised lip around the camera plateau. That lip covers the exact edges that chip.
- Skip peroxide-based or harsh cleaners. Some Cosmic Orange owners say their frame has turned pinkish. The cause isn’t confirmed, but BGR names UV exposure and peroxide cleaners as suspects.
- Accept that deep chips and dents count as cosmetic damage. The standard warranty won’t cover them; AppleCare+ treats them as accidental damage.
Calls drop and data stalls with full bars
On Apple’s Community forums, owners describe “consistent signal drop and data failure despite full bars”. Calls cut out, pages hang, and the status bar flips between 5G, LTE and no service. Tom’s Guide picked up dropped-call complaints shortly after the Scratchgate story, and BGR collected reports from T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T customers.
Apple’s iOS 26.0.1 release notes admitted that some users couldn’t connect to a cellular network after updating to iOS 26, and fixed it. Cases that remain after that are usually an outdated carrier settings file, a corrupted eSIM profile or a problem on the network side. On a second-hand phone, a carrier lock or a blocked IMEI is also on the list.
Work through these in order and stop when the problem does:
- Update iOS in Settings › General › Software Update. As of October 2026 that means iOS 27.0.1 or later.
- Turn Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds, then off. The phone re-registers with the network.
- Open Settings › General › About and wait a few seconds. If a carrier settings update exists, a prompt pops up.
- Try LTE only for a day: Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data Options › Voice & Data › LTE. If calls settle down, 5G coverage where you are is the weak point.
- Reset network settings: Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. You’ll have to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords. Your eSIM stays.
- Borrow a friend’s SIM or add a second eSIM. If that line works, ask your carrier to reissue your eSIM or replace the SIM.
- If two different lines both fail where coverage is good, book a diagnostic. That points to the antenna or modem, which is covered in the first year.
Bought it used and it says “No Service” or “SIM Not Supported”? It may still be locked to another carrier. Read why an “unlocked” phone can show no service and run a carrier and SIM-lock check before you message the seller.
Wi-Fi, AirPods and CarPlay keep cutting out
Wi-Fi drops and reconnects. AirPods stutter. Wireless CarPlay disconnects halfway through a drive. This one Apple confirmed in writing: the iOS 26.0.1 notes say “Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may occasionally disconnect on iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models.” BGR reported that the same update cleared cellular, Bluetooth and CarPlay disconnects for most people.
So the first step is simply being on anything newer than 26.0.1. If it still happens:
- Forget the accessory and pair it again: Settings › Bluetooth › tap ⓘ › Forget This Device. For the car, go to Settings › General › CarPlay, pick the car, then Forget This Car.
- Check whether your car maker has released an infotainment update. Many did for newer iOS versions.
- If a router or car hotspot struggles, tap ⓘ next to that Wi-Fi network and set Private Wi-Fi Address to Fixed.
- Reset Network Settings as the last software step.
Hot while filming 4K or fast charging
Long 4K sessions, gaming and fast charging can make the phone hot enough to dim the screen or pause charging. The 17 Pro has an aluminium body and a vapor chamber to spread heat, which helps, but high-bitrate video and fast charging still produce a lot of it. BGR lists stutter and extra heat during 5G use or charging among owner complaints. It also points out that heat in the first day or two after setup is normal, because the phone is indexing your data.
- Take a thick case off for long recording sessions or while charging.
- Don’t charge while you record, game or navigate.
- Drop the video format when you don’t need the top setting: Settings › Camera › Record Video, then 1080p or 4K at 30 fps instead of 60 or 120 fps.
- Keep it off sunny dashboards.
- Look in Settings › Battery for an app burning power in the background.
A temperature warning during normal use, or a phone that gets hot while sitting idle, is not a settings problem. Take it to Apple.
Battery drain since iOS 27
Lots of owners installed iOS 27 in September 2026 and saw the battery fall faster. Apple’s position, which we cover in the iOS 27 problems and fixes article, is that a short-term hit to battery and heat after a major update is normal while the phone re-indexes photos, messages and files.
Give it two or three nights on the charger and on Wi-Fi before you decide something is wrong. Then:
- Open Settings › Battery and look for apps with heavy background activity.
- Check Settings › Battery › Battery Health for Maximum Capacity and the cycle count.
- Set a charge limit in Settings › Battery › Charging. You can choose from 80% to 100% in steps, and a lower limit means less wear over the years.
- If the phone won’t take a cable charge after hitting 0% (a quirk BGR reported), lay it on a MagSafe or Qi2 charger for a few minutes to wake it up.
Which of these are permanent?
| Problem | Can software fix it? | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Marks on back glass after MagSafe stand use | Not needed, it’s transfer | Damp microfibre cloth |
| Chips on camera plateau edges | No, cosmetic damage | Case with a raised lip |
| Signal drops, no data with full bars | Usually | Update iOS, Airplane Mode, reset network settings |
| Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, CarPlay disconnects | Yes, fixed in iOS 26.0.1 | Install the latest iOS |
| Heat when charging or filming | Partly | Remove the case, pause recording |
| Faster drain after an update | Usually settles | Wait 48–72 hours, then check Settings › Battery |
If the phone is yours and something still isn’t right, check your coverage first. Every iPhone 17 Pro sold in September 2025 is at or near the end of its one-year limited warranty. AppleCare+ extends hardware cover and adds accidental damage. No Service on two different lines, heat while idle, Wi-Fi that fails on every network even after a reset, or a battery under 80% are all good reasons to book Apple diagnostics through the Support app or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Buying a used iPhone 17 Pro: check these in person
A lot of 17 Pros are being traded in for the 18 Pro right now (our iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro comparison explains what actually changed). Before you hand over money:
- Camera plateau and frame. Look hard at the plateau corners and frame edges. Chips and dents lower the value and can’t be polished out.
- Back glass. Wipe any marks first. Transfer comes off; scratches stay.
- Battery. Settings › Battery › Battery Health shows capacity and cycle count.
- Replaced parts. Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History lists swapped screens, batteries or cameras.
- Calls and data. Put in your own SIM or add your eSIM and make a real call.
- Locks. Run the free All-in-one Basic Info check for model, Find My and warranty, then a GSMA blacklist check on the IMEI.

Frequently asked questions
What is iPhone 17 Pro Scratchgate?
The nickname for marks seen on iPhone 17 Pro demo units at launch. Apple said most were material from MagSafe stands that wipes off, but the anodised edges of the camera plateau can genuinely chip in a knock or drop.
Why does my iPhone 17 Pro drop calls with full bars?
Usually software, carrier settings or the SIM/eSIM profile. Update iOS, toggle Airplane Mode, check Settings › General › About for a carrier update, reset network settings and test another line.
Did Apple fix iPhone 17 Pro Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disconnects?
Yes. iOS 26.0.1 fixed occasional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disconnects on iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro, along with a cellular connection bug. Every later version includes the fix.
Why does my iPhone 17 Pro get hot when filming?
High-resolution, high-frame-rate video and fast charging generate a lot of heat. Take off thick cases, don’t charge while recording, and lower the format in Settings › Camera › Record Video.
Is the iPhone 17 Pro still worth buying in late 2026?
For many buyers it is. Apple.com no longer sells it, but it sells strongly used and refurbished. Inspect the camera plateau, check battery health and verify the IMEI first.
How do I set a charge limit on iPhone 17 Pro?
Go to Settings › Battery › Charging and pick a limit between 80% and 100%. A lower limit slows battery wear.
