A podcast skips for half a second. Then again. Your earbuds are fine with every other phone, so it has to be the iPhone 16e. Bluetooth stutter was the first of the iPhone 16e problems to show up after launch, and it was soon joined by “No Service” glitches, updates that wouldn’t install and a lot of confusion about magnetic accessories sliding off.

Most of it traces back to how the 16e is built. It was the first iPhone with Apple’s own C1 cellular modem instead of a Qualcomm chip, and Apple left a few things out to hit the price. Once you know which parts are different, it gets much easier to tell a software quirk from a real fault.

What makes the 16e different from other iPhones

Apple announced the iPhone 16e in February 2025 to replace the iPhone SE. It has the A18 chip, a 6.1-inch OLED screen, Face ID, a single 48 MP rear camera, the Action button and USB-C. Three choices explain most of the questions owners ask:

  • The C1 modem. Apple’s first in-house modem runs 5G and LTE. It’s efficient, but like any first-generation radio its early software needed tuning.
  • No MagSafe magnets. It charges on standard Qi pads, but there’s no magnet ring in the back.
  • Older wireless hardware. The 16e came before Apple’s N1 wireless chip (which arrived with the iPhone 17 line), and early Bluetooth reports clustered around phones paired to several devices at once.

In March 2026 Apple replaced it with the iPhone 17e, which adds MagSafe, the A19 chip and the faster C1X modem. That pushed a lot of 16e units onto the used market, so these problems now matter to second owners as much as first ones.

Bluetooth audio stutters or drops out

Music cuts out for a fraction of a second. Calls on earbuds break up. Shortly after launch, Heise and iPhone-Ticker in Germany, Android Authority and others carried owner reports describing exactly that, plus interrupted phone calls.

Android Authority’s testing found the stutter showed up mostly when the 16e was connected to two or more Bluetooth devices at once, typically a non-Apple smartwatch or fitness tracker plus earbuds. Their reviewer reproduced it with a Garmin watch and Shokz headphones, but not with an Apple Watch and AirPods Pro 2. Owners in Apple’s support community later said iOS 18.4 cleared it up. Apple never published an explanation.

  1. Update iOS in Settings › General › Software Update. A used 16e still on iOS 18.3 or earlier may be fixed by this alone.
  2. Switch off Bluetooth on your watch or fitness band for a while, or close its companion app, and listen again.
  3. Forget the headphones and pair them fresh: Settings › Bluetooth › tap ⓘ › Forget This Device.
  4. Update the headphones’ firmware in the maker’s app. Sony, Bose, Samsung and Shokz all ship fixes that way.
  5. Reset Network Settings (Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings). This wipes all Bluetooth pairings and Wi-Fi passwords.

Still stuttering on the latest iOS with just one pair connected? Try a different pair. If every accessory does it, book an Apple diagnostic. An antenna or wireless fault would be a warranty job.

“No Service”, SOS only or calls dropping

Your friend on the same carrier has signal and you don’t. Or the bars look fine and data just stalls.

Very few of these turn out to be a bad modem. The usual causes are outdated carrier settings, a damaged SIM, an eSIM that didn’t transfer properly, or a phone that’s locked to a different carrier. Carriers have tested Qualcomm modems for years and the C1 is newer, so carrier settings updates matter more on the 16e than on older iPhones.

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds and off again so the phone re-registers.
  2. Open Settings › General › About and wait about 20 seconds. A pop-up appears if there’s a carrier update.
  3. In Settings › Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions), check the line is switched on and chosen for Cellular Data.
  4. Power off, take out the physical SIM, look for damage and put it back. An old SIM is worth swapping for a new one.
  5. If you moved from another phone, the eSIM may be half-transferred. Get a new eSIM QR code from your carrier or use carrier activation in Settings › Cellular › Add eSIM. The eSIM setup and transfer guide goes through both.
  6. Reset Network Settings.

A used 16e that says “SIM Not Supported” is almost always carrier-locked rather than broken. Here’s what “SIM not supported” actually means. If it is unlocked and still won’t connect, the piece on unlocked phones with no service covers APN and band problems. A carrier and SIM-lock check tells you the lock status from the IMEI before you spend an hour on hold.

“Unable to Install Update” or stuck on Preparing

Sometimes the update isn’t your fault at all. In November 2025 Apple stopped iOS 26.2 beta 1 from installing on devices with the C1 modem (the iPhone 16e, iPhone Air and cellular M5 iPad Pro) after users reported failed installs, according to AppleInsider and 9to5Mac. Reports suggested Apple was worried about cellular connectivity on that build.

That was a developer beta. Still, it shows C1 devices can be held back from a build while other iPhones get it. Much more often, though, the cause is a full phone or weak Wi-Fi.

  1. On a beta? Wait for the next build instead of forcing it. Apple usually ships a corrected one within a week or two.
  2. Free up space in Settings › General › iPhone Storage. Have at least 10 GB spare before a major update.
  3. In the same screen, tap the iOS update file and choose Delete Update. Download it again on Wi-Fi with the phone plugged in.
  4. Update from a computer instead: Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on Windows. That uses the full installer rather than a smaller over-the-air patch.

Battery drains faster than it used to

Battery life is one of the 16e’s strong points. So when it suddenly drops, there’s usually a clear reason: indexing after a big update (iOS 27 rebuilt search indexes on many iPhones, covered in our iOS 27 problems and fixes page), one badly behaved app, or poor signal making the modem work harder.

After a major update, give it two or three nights charging on Wi-Fi before you judge. If it’s still bad:

  • Settings › Battery shows usage by app for the last 24 hours and 10 days. Update, reinstall or restrict anything with heavy background activity.
  • Cut down Background App Refresh in Settings › General › Background App Refresh.
  • In Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, move apps from “Always” to “While Using”.
  • Where 5G is weak, try Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data Options › Voice & Data › LTE and see whether drain improves.
  • Look at Settings › Battery › Battery Health. Under 80% maximum capacity, Apple recommends a battery service.

MagSafe chargers and wallets slide off

Not a fault. There are no MagSafe magnets in the 16e, so MagSafe chargers, car mounts and wallets won’t hold on by themselves. It still charges on standard Qi pads, and on most MagSafe chargers if you keep it in place, but more slowly than a MagSafe iPhone.

A case labelled “MagSafe compatible” adds the magnet ring. Use a USB-C cable when you need a fast top-up. And if magnets matter to you, the iPhone 17e and the regular iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 models have MagSafe built in.

Is it the phone? Warranty and repair

Suspect hardware only when a problem survives the latest update, a Reset Network Settings and, if needed, an erase and restore. Typical signs: no signal with several known-good SIMs, Bluetooth failing with every accessory, or Face ID becoming unavailable.

The one-year limited warranty has already run out on many early 16e units, so check before paying for anything. An iPhone warranty check shows the coverage end date and whether AppleCare+ is attached. It’s also worth opening Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History. Non-genuine parts can cause odd behaviour.

Buying a used iPhone 16e

With the 17e out, there are plenty of 16e listings. Before you pay:

  1. Dial *#06# for the IMEI. It should match the box and Settings › General › About.
  2. Run the free All-in-one Basic Info check for model, blacklist status and basic warranty details.
  3. Confirm model, colour, storage and Find My status with a model and Find My check. Find My has to be off before money changes hands.
  4. For repair history, replacement units and carrier policy, order a full GSX report.
  5. Make a call, load a web page on mobile data and play audio through Bluetooth, right there.
Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone 16e Bluetooth keep stuttering?

Early reports tied it to having several Bluetooth devices connected at once, such as a fitness tracker plus earbuds. Owners said iOS 18.4 fixed it, so update first, then forget and re-pair the headphones.

Does the iPhone 16e have MagSafe?

No. It has no MagSafe magnets but supports standard Qi wireless charging. A MagSafe-compatible case adds the magnets for accessories.

Is the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e bad?

No widespread hardware fault has been confirmed. Most no-service cases are fixed by a carrier settings update, reseating the SIM, reinstalling the eSIM or resetting network settings.

Why won’t my iPhone 16e update?

Usually low storage or a weak connection. Apple has also paused at least one beta build for C1-modem devices, so beta users should wait for the next release or update through a computer.

Is the iPhone 16e still worth buying used?

It can be if the price is right and you don’t need MagSafe. Check the IMEI for blacklist, carrier lock, Find My and warranty status before paying.
