You pull the phone out of your pocket and the glass around the camera is warm, the battery is at 61% by lunchtime, and you haven’t played a single game. That is the iPhone 16 Pro Max problem people write about most in 2026, two years after launch. The other complaints are freezes, surprise restarts and a screen that sometimes ignores your thumb.

Some of it is a recent iOS update misbehaving, and some of it is a battery that has done two years of charging. You can usually tell which within a day or two, and the fixes for the software side take minutes.

Hot to the touch and draining fast

Heat and drain tend to show up together. In several Apple Community threads, owners describe a 16 Pro Max that is “hot with fast drain” while it sits idle on a desk.

This year the triggers have mostly been updates. Apple released the iOS 26.5.2 security update on 29 June 2026, and PhoneArena then reported users complaining of faster drain and iPhones getting too hot to hold. One of them was an iPhone 16 Pro Max owner on Reddit. Apple didn’t publicly acknowledge a bug.

The move to iOS 27 in September added a second wave. After any major update, iOS re-indexes your photos, messages and search data for several days, and that keeps the chip busy in the background. Cybernews collected iOS 27 reports of higher overnight drain and random battery loss on older models, and some people were still describing iOS 26 drain in Apple Community before that.

What to try, in this order

  1. Wait out the indexing. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and on charge overnight for two or three nights.
  2. Restart once after the update has finished installing.
  3. Look at Settings › Battery. Check the activity list for the last 24 hours and the last 10 days, and tap an app to see screen-on time against background time. An app with hours of background activity is the usual suspect. PhoneArena points at Facebook and Instagram as known causes of drain and heat. Update the worst one, or delete it and install it again.
  4. Cut background work in Settings › General › Background App Refresh for anything that doesn’t need it.
  5. Trim location use in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, and switch off System Services you don’t use.
  6. Run Low Power Mode for a day (Settings › Battery). If the drain drops noticeably, background activity is your cause.
  7. Take away outside heat. Pull off a thick case while charging, skip fast wireless charging in a hot car, and don’t game on the charger.
  8. Check for a newer build in Settings › General › Software Update.
  9. Reset All Settings if nothing else works: Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings. Your data stays, but network and system settings go back to default.

Drain across every supported iPhone, plus Wi-Fi drops and app crashes, is in our iOS 27 problems and fixes article.

The screen locks up, everything goes sluggish, or the phone restarts by itself while it’s lying on a table.

The 16 Pro Max has a history here. In October 2024 Tom’s Guide reported that some iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max owners saw random freezing and resetting on iOS 18.0.1 and 18.1, even on replacement units. Some of them found that setting the phone up fresh, without restoring an iCloud backup, made it stop. That pointed to software rather than a hardware fault. In 2026, Cybernews noted iOS 27 reports of UI freezes and slow animations on older iPhones as well.

  1. Force restart. Press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Update iOS in Settings › General › Software Update.
  3. Clear some space. Keep at least 10% free; you can see how much you have in Settings › General › iPhone Storage.
  4. Read the crash logs. Open Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements › Analytics Data. Lots of entries starting with “panic-full” suggest something deeper, and they are worth showing Apple.
  5. Erase and set up as new once you have a full backup. Use it for a day before restoring your data, so you know whether the backup is the problem.

The screen stops taking taps

The phone is clearly running, the clock is ticking, but taps do nothing. One specific cause has already been fixed. TechRepublic reported that iOS 27.0.1, released on 28 September 2026, fixed a bug where the touchscreen could freeze if Notification Center and Control Center were opened at the same time. So the first step is to be on 27.0.1 or later.

After that:

  • Take off the screen protector and case. Thick or lifted glass protectors leave dead zones, mostly near the edges.
  • Clean and dry the glass. Water and hand cream confuse the touch sensor.
  • Check that Touch Accommodations isn’t on: Settings › Accessibility › Touch.
  • Force restart with the button sequence above.

A patch of screen that never responds, or ghost touches that began after a drop or a third-party screen repair, means hardware. A non-genuine display is listed as “Unknown Part” under Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History.

Reading Battery Health on a two-year-old phone

If you bought yours in September 2024, it has had two years of daily charging. Open Settings › Battery › Battery Health, where you’ll find Maximum Capacity and the cycle count. Apple says iPhone 15 models and later are designed to keep 80% capacity at 1,000 cycles, and it recommends battery service once capacity is below 80% or iOS shows a service message.

Maximum CapacityWhat it means for you
Above 85%Normal ageing. Heavy drain is more likely software.
80–85%Days get shorter. Start planning a replacement.
Below 80%, or “Service”Book battery service with Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider.

To slow things down from here, set a charge limit such as 80% under Settings › Battery › Charging. What the battery screen and the parts list can tell you is covered in our iPhone battery health and parts history article.

Getting the battery or screen repaired

Launch-day phones are out of Apple’s standard one-year warranty now, but AppleCare+ may still pay for battery service. Before you hand over money, run an iPhone warranty check on your serial number and see the coverage dates.

Take the phone in, rather than keep trying software fixes, if any of these is true:

  • Maximum Capacity is under 80%, or the phone says “Service”.
  • Part of the screen stays dead after a force restart and with the protector off.
  • Analytics Data keeps filling with “panic-full” logs after a clean setup.
  • It still overheats when idle after a week on the latest iOS 27 build.

Buying a used iPhone 16 Pro Max? Check these first

Plenty of 16 Pro Max units are being sold on as people move to the iPhone 18 series. Before you pay:

  1. Dial *#06# and make sure the IMEI matches the one in Settings › General › About.
  2. Open Battery Health and Parts and Service History and look for replaced parts.
  3. Run an Apple full GSX report to confirm the model, purchase country, warranty, replacement status and Find My.
  4. Test Face ID, Camera Control, the speakers and mobile data with your own SIM.
  5. Compare the price with our iPhone trade-in values for 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone 16 Pro Max getting hot and draining fast?

Most often it’s background indexing after an update, an app such as a social media app misbehaving, or a recent iOS bug. Check Settings › Battery, update iOS and give it a few nights on Wi-Fi.

Did iOS 26.5.2 cause battery drain on the iPhone 16 Pro Max?

PhoneArena reported complaints of faster drain and heat after iOS 26.5.2, including one from a 16 Pro Max owner. Apple did not confirm a bug.

How do I force restart an iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

When should I replace my iPhone 16 Pro Max battery?

Apple recommends battery service when Maximum Capacity in Settings › Battery › Battery Health falls below 80% or a service message appears.

Does iOS 27 fix the touchscreen freeze?

iOS 27.0.1 fixed a freeze that happened when Notification Center and Control Center were opened together, so update to 27.0.1 or later.

Is a used iPhone 16 Pro Max worth buying in 2026?

It can be, as long as battery health is good, no unknown parts are listed and an IMEI check shows it isn’t blacklisted or tied to Find My.
