The box looks right and the phone is fast, but there’s no Play Store, and half your apps won’t sign in. Buyers who imported a China-market unit hit that first, and it’s one of the Honor Magic 8 Pro problems that has nothing to do with a fault. The others are more ordinary: battery drain caused by app management settings, heat under load, bugs after MagicOS updates and a few camera quirks.

This is a serious flagship, with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a big battery and a camera that DxOMark lists among the phones it has tested. Most of what goes wrong is in the settings.

No Google Play on an imported phone

Global Magic 8 Pro units sold in Europe, the Middle East and other international markets come with Google Play services. Phones from China-market sellers usually don’t, because Chinese ROMs ship without them. The result is apps that won’t install, crash on launch or can’t sign in.

Open Play Store › Settings › About › Play Protect certification. “Device is certified” means Google services are official. If it isn’t, our Play Protect certified check explains your options. Steer clear of sideloaded “Google installer” tools, which are unofficial and tend to break with updates. If you rely on Google apps, the answer is a global unit.

Battery draining faster than a big battery should

Short screen-on time, overnight drain, or a phone that stays warm in standby. MagicOS lets you set individual apps to run freely in the background, and if you switched apps to manual management to keep their notifications coming, they may now be keeping the processor awake. Big updates also cause drain for a while as apps re-optimise.

  1. Open Settings › Battery and look at consumption by app over the last 24 hours.
  2. Go to Settings › Battery › App launch and set apps back to Manage automatically. Keep manual only for apps that really need background activity, such as messaging.
  3. Turn on Power saving mode from the Battery page when you need extra hours.
  4. Bring the refresh rate or brightness down in Settings › Display & brightness.
  5. After an update, wait two or three days before you judge battery life.
  6. Honor’s support site and the My HONOR app both have problem diagnosis tools that can check battery health.

Shutdowns at 20 to 30%, a battery that heats up while idle, or a back cover that’s swelling need a service centre. If the case bulges, stop using the phone.

Heat during games, 4K video and charging

Like every top chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 gets warm under sustained load. You’ll notice it most during 4K recording, long gaming sessions, fast or wireless charging, and on 5G in weak coverage.

Close heavy apps and let the phone cool before you charge it. Don’t game on the charger, and take a thick case off. In games, lower graphics and frame rate and choose the game assistant’s balanced or power-saving mode over maximum performance. Where 5G is poor, switch to 4G for a while, because the modem works hard hunting for signal. Keep apps and MagicOS updated, since heat bugs are often patched.

A phone that’s consistently warm in standby or during light browsing isn’t normal. Have Honor check it.

Lag, crashes and odd settings after a MagicOS update

After an update you might see lag, crashing apps, late notifications, or settings and features that behave differently.

  1. Install follow-up patches from Settings › System & updates › Software update. Honor regularly ships small fix builds after major releases and publishes MagicOS security bulletins on its support site.
  2. Update every app from the store you use: Google Play on global units, and HONOR App Market as well.
  3. Clear a misbehaving app’s cache in Settings › Apps › Apps › [app] › Storage › Clear cache.
  4. Recheck notification permissions, because updates can reset them. For apps with late notifications, look at their setting under App launch.
  5. Restart once the update has finished optimising.
  6. If it’s still wrong, use Reset all settings under Settings › System & updates › Reset. Your data stays.

Factory reset as the last step

A reset clears leftover settings and cached data that can cause lag after a major MagicOS version, but it also erases the phone. Back up with Honor’s backup tool and your Google account, then reset from Settings › System & updates › Reset › Reset phone. Add apps back gradually instead of restoring everything at once. If the problem returns after a particular app, you’ve found it. Make sure you know the password for the Google account on the phone, because setup asks for it after a reset.

Wi-Fi and 5G dropping out

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode, then restart the phone and the router.
  2. Forget the Wi-Fi network and rejoin. If the router uses one name for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try splitting them.
  3. In mobile network settings, check 5G is on and the carrier’s APN is correct.
  4. Reset network settings in Settings › System & updates › Reset › Reset network settings. Saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings go.
  5. Check your model supports your carrier’s bands. Imports can be missing some local 5G bands.

Camera lag and soft zoom shots

The camera is one of the phone’s strengths, and most complaints come down to software or handling. If the camera is slow to open or switch lenses, update the camera app and clear its cache. For blurry zoom shots, hold still for a moment after the shutter sound while processing finishes, and wipe the periscope window. If photos look overprocessed, turn off AI scene enhancement or shoot in a pro mode. A camera that won’t open, or shows a black screen even after a restart and a cache clear, points to hardware, so book a repair.

Fix it or move to the Magic 9?

Honor launched the Magic 9, Magic 9 Pro Max and Magic 9 Super Edition in Beijing on 28 September 2026. According to Tech-ish there’s no plain “Magic 9 Pro” this time. The Pro Max uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 with an 8,800 mAh battery, 100W wired and 80W wireless charging, while the standard Magic 9 keeps the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 from the Magic 8 Pro. Honor flagships usually reach international markets four to eight weeks after China, so a global release around November or December is expected. Prices hadn’t been announced when we wrote this.

If your only trouble is battery settings or update bugs, fixing them costs nothing. If you game heavily or want the newest chip, the Magic 9 Pro Max is the real step up, and the standard Magic 9 isn’t. Our Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Dimensity 9600 phones guide explains the new chips.

Checking a used Magic 8 Pro

More second-hand Magic 8 Pros will appear as owners upgrade. Before you pay:

  • Make sure it’s a global unit and that Play Protect shows it as certified.
  • Run a manufacturer and model check for model and region, and a GSMA blacklist check on the IMEI.
  • Watch the seller sign out of their Honor ID and Google account, and check the carrier lock status.
  • Try the camera at every zoom level and record a short video to see how warm it gets.
Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Honor Magic 8 Pro battery draining fast?

Apps set to manual background management can keep the phone awake. Set them to Manage automatically in Settings › Battery › App launch and check usage by app.

Does the Honor Magic 8 Pro have Google Play?

Global versions do. China-market units usually ship without Google services, so check Play Protect certification before you buy.

How do I fix Wi-Fi or 5G problems on the Magic 8 Pro?

Restart the phone and router, rejoin the network, and reset network settings under Settings › System & updates › Reset.

When is the Honor Magic 9 coming to Europe?

The series launched in China on 28 September 2026. Honor flagships usually go global four to eight weeks later, so November or December is expected.

Should I upgrade from the Magic 8 Pro to the Magic 9?

Only for the newest chip or the charging upgrades on the Pro Max. The standard Magic 9 uses the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as the Magic 8 Pro.
