Samsung logo. Black screen. Samsung logo again. In May 2025 that loop was what a lot of owners got after a small software update, and it’s still the first thing people search when they look up Galaxy A56 problems. The others are more everyday: a phone that won’t switch on, battery that empties faster than it should, heat, and charging that’s slower than the box suggests.
Everything below starts with the steps that leave your data alone.
The May 2025 update that sent phones into a loop
The update itself was minor. It made Gemini open with a long-press of the side key. Within days, owners in Europe were posting on Samsung’s Community forums that their phones were stuck on the boot screen or restarting endlessly. GSMArena, SamMobile and PhoneArena all covered it, and Samsung hadn’t acknowledged the problem when those reports went up. The A26 and A36 got the same update without similar complaints.
You’ll see the Samsung logo, a restart, and the same again, or the boot animation freezes and the lock screen never appears. Try these in order:
- Take the SIM out and boot. This is the workaround SamMobile reported from a forum user. With the phone off, remove the SIM, switch on and let it boot fully, then put the SIM back. Samsung hasn’t confirmed it and it doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s harmless and keeps your data.
- Force restart by holding Volume down + Side button for about 10 seconds, until the screen goes black and it starts again.
- Safe Mode. If the lock screen flashes up, open the power menu, long-press Power off and tap Safe mode. If the phone behaves there, a third-party app is involved, so uninstall whatever you added recently.
- Wipe the cache partition from recovery mode (next section). It removes temporary system files, not your personal data.
- Go to a Samsung service centre before you factory reset. They can reflash the official firmware and may be able to keep your data.
Getting into recovery mode
Recovery lets you wipe the cache, reboot, or as a final resort reset the phone. Recent Galaxy phones only enter it with a cable plugged in.
- Turn the phone off. If it’s looping, force it off with Volume down + Side, and move straight to the next step as the screen goes black.
- Plug a USB-C cable into a computer or charger.
- Hold Volume up + Side button until the Samsung logo appears, then let go. The timing is a bit fussy, so try again if it boots normally.
- Use the volume keys to reach Wipe cache partition, press Side, then confirm with Yes.
- Select Reboot system now.
The recovery screen also shows the firmware build, which is handy if you end up talking to Samsung. For other hidden menus and test codes, see our Android hidden diagnostic codes list.
A black screen that won’t respond
No picture, no vibration, nothing when you press the side key.
- Leave it on a charger you trust for at least 30 minutes. A completely flat battery may show nothing at first.
- While it’s charging, hold Volume down + Side button for 10 to 20 seconds.
- Swap the cable and charger, and shine a light into the USB-C port to check for lint.
- Feel a vibration or see a flash but no image? The display may have died rather than the phone. Ring it, or connect it to a PC, to find out.
If there’s no charging animation, no vibration and no PC detection after an hour on charge, you’re looking at a battery, charging board or mainboard fault. Book a Samsung repair, and check coverage first with a Samsung Info report, which shows warranty status from the IMEI.
Battery not lasting the day
The A56 has a 5,000 mAh battery and Samsung’s Exynos 1580 chip, so a full day is what you should expect. When drain gets worse, it usually follows an update or a new app.
- Give it a few days after a big update while the system re-optimises apps in the background.
- Open Settings › Battery, view usage since the last full charge, and restrict or reinstall the worst offender.
- Move rarely used apps into Sleeping or Deep sleeping under background usage limits.
- Switch on Adaptive battery so Android limits apps you don’t use often, and Battery protection (Settings › Battery) to cap charging and slow wear.
- Need every last hour? Set Settings › Display › Motion smoothness to Standard.
If it’s still bad after a week and a cache wipe, the battery may be worn. The diagnostics section of Samsung’s Members app can test it.
Slow charging and a warm phone
The A56 supports 45W wired charging, but there’s no charger in the box, and you only get that speed from a compatible USB-C PD charger with PPS.
- Use a Samsung 45W adapter, or another PD PPS charger rated for it, with a 5A USB-C cable.
- Make sure “Fast charging” is switched on under the extra battery settings.
- Battery protection can stop charging at 80% or 85%. That’s deliberate, not a fault.
- Clean the port gently with a wooden toothpick or a dry brush.
- Charging slows when the phone is hot or in use, so turn the screen off while it charges.
Warmth during games, video calls or fast charging is normal too. Don’t game or stream on the charger, take thick cases off, and update your apps, since a buggy version can keep the processor busy. A lighter performance profile in the battery or Device care settings, and lower graphics in games, both help. Heat warnings during light use, or a phone that’s hot while idle, are a reason to back up and get it checked.
Buying a used A56
Marketplaces are full of them. Before you pay, switch it on and make sure it boots past the logo, test the charging speed with your own charger, and confirm the Google and Samsung accounts have been removed. Then run a GSMA blacklist check on the IMEI and a Samsung Info S2 report for model, region and warranty.
Installing One UI 9 without a repeat
Samsung promised the A56 six major Android upgrades. As of early October 2026 the stable One UI 9 (Android 17) rollout had reached flagships first, and none of the sources we follow had a confirmed date for A-series phones. Our One UI 9 rollout tracker will show it when it lands. When it does:
- Back up with Smart Switch to a PC or USB drive, plus Google and Samsung Cloud. Our backup checklist lists what to save.
- Charge to at least 50% and use stable Wi-Fi.
- Install from Settings › Software update › Download and install.
- If early reports mention bootloops, wait a week. Samsung often ships a fixed build quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Galaxy A56 stuck in a bootloop after an update?
Some owners hit bootloops after a May 2025 update that added Gemini side-key access. Try removing the SIM, booting, then putting it back, and wipe the cache partition.
Does wiping the cache partition delete my data?
No. It only clears temporary system files. Wipe data/factory reset is the option that erases the phone.
How do I enter recovery mode on a Galaxy A56?
Turn it off, connect a USB-C cable, then hold Volume up and the Side button until the Samsung logo appears.
What charger does the Galaxy A56 need for fast charging?
A compatible USB-C PD PPS charger and cable for 45W. There’s no charger in the box.
Is the Galaxy A56 getting One UI 9?
Samsung promised six OS upgrades, so it’s due. As of early October 2026, no stable A-series date had been confirmed.
