“Hello? Can you hear me?” If the person on the other end keeps asking that, your Galaxy A36’s microphone is the first thing to test. Dead mics, a vibration motor that has gone quiet, a phone that won’t charge (or insists it’s charging with nothing plugged in) and battery drain are the Galaxy A36 problems owners search for most.

The A36 sells in large numbers, so even a small share of faulty units means a lot of unhappy owners. Some of these faults are settings. Others are parts that Samsung should replace under warranty, and the phone has a built-in way to tell you which.

Run the hidden test menu first

Open the Phone app and dial *#0*#. A grid of hardware tests appears: Speaker, Receiver, Vibration, touch, the microphones and more. Each test either works or it doesn’t, and that answer saves you hours of resetting a phone with a broken part.

If the code does nothing, open Samsung Members › Support › Phone diagnostics instead. It runs the same core tests, including Cable charging and Battery status. Our Android hidden diagnostic codes article explains every test in the *#0*# menu.

Callers can’t hear you

Voice notes come out silent, or the mic works in WhatsApp but not in the Phone app. Go through these before assuming the worst:

  1. Disconnect Bluetooth. Calls may be going to earbuds in your bag or the car outside.
  2. Check permissions in Settings › Security and privacy › Privacy › Permission manager › Microphone, and make sure the microphone access toggle in Quick Settings is on.
  3. Clean the mic holes on the bottom edge with a soft, dry brush. Some cases cover them.
  4. Turn off Voice focus and similar noise features during calls if you sound muffled.
  5. Run the mic tests in *#0*# (choose Speaker or Receiver and the mic tests) or in Phone diagnostics.

No buzz when a message arrives

Look at Settings › Sounds and vibration › Vibration intensity first. Call, Notification and Touch interactions all need to be above zero. Then check that a Mode such as Sleep or Do not disturb isn’t silencing everything, in Settings › Modes and Routines.

If the Vibration test in *#0*# gives you nothing at all, the motor or its connection has failed. That’s a hardware repair.

Won’t charge, or keeps connecting and disconnecting

Some owners on complaint sites describe A36 phones that act as if they’re always charging, alongside other failures. More often the phone charges slowly, drops the connection, or ignores the cable completely.

  1. Swap the cable and adapter. The A36 supports 45W Super Fast Charging 2.0 with a compatible USB PD PPS charger. A Samsung 25W adapter works too, for normal fast charging.
  2. Clean the USB-C port. Pocket lint is the most common cause. Power off and lift debris out gently with a wooden toothpick, never anything metal.
  3. Read any moisture warning. If it says moisture was detected, leave it to dry for a few hours. No hair dryer.
  4. Check Settings › Battery › Charging settings. Battery protection can stop charging at 80% or 85%. That’s on purpose.
  5. Charge in Safe Mode. If it charges normally there, an app is getting in the way.
  6. Run the Cable charging and Battery status tests in Samsung Members › Support › Phone diagnostics.

Clean port, several chargers tried, and diagnostics still report a charging fault? Then the charging port or sub-board needs replacing. Authorised Samsung service centres do this often, and it’s not an expensive repair.

Battery gone by mid-afternoon

A 5,000mAh battery should get you through a day comfortably. Samsung Members has a long-running thread titled “Samsung A36 Battery Drain”, and owners commonly report it after updates. The usual causes are an app running in the background, weak mobile signal (the modem works harder hunting for coverage) and the days of re-optimisation after a big update.

  • Restart and install waiting app updates.
  • Find the worst app in Settings › Battery › View details, add it to Settings › Battery › Background usage limits › Deep sleeping apps, and turn on Put unused apps to sleep.
  • Set Settings › Display › Motion smoothness to Standard if you don’t need 120Hz all day.
  • Where signal is weak, use Wi-Fi Calling, or set Settings › Connections › Mobile networks › Network mode to a mode your carrier supports well.
  • Wipe the cache partition: power off, connect a USB-C cable to a PC, hold Power and Volume Up, and choose Wipe cache partition.

Lag, One UI 9 and when to reset

The A36 uses a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 with 6GB or 8GB of RAM depending on region. With full storage or lots of apps open it feels slower than a flagship Galaxy. Free at least 10–15% of storage in Settings › Battery and device care › Storage (just Device care on some versions), run Optimise now, and turn on Settings › Accessibility › Visibility enhancements › Reduce animations. Remove widgets and disable apps you never use.

On updates: SamMobile reported the A36 got the March 2026 security patch early in the year and One UI 8.5 in May. According to Android Central, stable One UI 9 on Android 17 began in South Korea on 15 October 2026 and reached Europe from 19 October, with global firmware A366BXXUCDZIF, the September 2026 security patch and a download of more than 2.3GB. Look in Settings › Software update › Download and install. Samsung promises six generations of OS upgrades for the A36, so plenty more are coming.

Factory reset: what it fixes and what it doesn’t

A reset clears deep software problems left over from upgrades: drain that won’t go away, constant lag, apps that crash whatever you do. It won’t revive a worn charging port, a dead mic or a failed vibration motor, so run the hardware tests first.

  1. Back up with Smart Switch to a PC, or to Samsung Cloud or Google One.
  2. Write down your Google account email and password. Google’s Factory Reset Protection will ask for them afterwards.
  3. Go to Settings › General management › Reset › Factory data reset.
  4. Set up as new and use it for a day before restoring everything, so you can see whether a particular app brings the problem back.

If the fault returns on a clean phone with no apps installed, it’s almost certainly hardware.

Buying a used A36

Lots of A36 phones are sold second-hand, and many were sold by carriers on payment plans. Before paying:

Booking a warranty repair with Samsung

A failed charging board, microphone or vibration motor, with no water damage or drop, is normally covered by Samsung’s manufacturer warranty. That’s typically 12 months in the US, and often longer in the UK and EU under consumer law. Before you book:

  1. Back up with Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud.
  2. Write down what the *#0*# or Phone diagnostics tests showed. Screenshots help.
  3. Confirm the manufacture date, region and warranty with a Samsung Info report. Our Samsung IMEI and warranty article explains each field.
  4. Remove the case and SIM before you hand it over.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Galaxy A36 battery draining so fast?

Usually a background app, weak signal or optimisation after an update. Check Settings › Battery › View details, deep-sleep heavy apps and give it a week after major updates.

Why is my Galaxy A36 not charging?

Most often lint in the USB-C port or a bad cable. Clean the port with a wooden toothpick, try another charger and run Phone diagnostics in Samsung Members.

How do I test the microphone on a Galaxy A36?

Dial *#0*# in the Phone app to open the test menu, or run the microphone test in Samsung Members › Support › Phone diagnostics.

Has the Galaxy A36 got One UI 9?

Yes. Stable One UI 9 on Android 17 started in South Korea on 15 October 2026 and in Europe from 19 October.

Is a broken A36 charging port covered by warranty?

Usually, if there’s no physical or liquid damage and the phone is within Samsung’s warranty period.
