Apps crashing “over and over again”. That line comes from a Samsung Members community thread titled “Issues on Galaxy a16 after one ui 8 update”, and it sums up the Galaxy A16 problems owners have had since that update: crashes, a phone that slows down or freezes, faster battery drain and games that stopped working.

It’s a big deal because the A16 sells in such numbers, particularly in Nigeria, India, Brazil and across the Middle East. Others in the thread describe freezing on a phone less than two years old. One says the A16 was glitchy on One UI 7, but apps didn’t crash the way they do now. Clearing the cache, and even uninstalling most apps, didn’t fix it for some of them. There’s no official Samsung reply in the thread.

Clearing the cache alone isn’t enough, then. What helps is giving the phone back memory and storage.

Why a low-RAM phone struggles after a big update

There are two A16s: the 4G model and the Galaxy A16 5G. Depending on the market they come with 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of RAM. Each new One UI version brings more features, bigger system apps and more background services. Meanwhile WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook keep getting heavier.

On a 4GB or 6GB phone that leaves less memory for whatever’s on screen. Android starts closing apps sooner, which looks like crashing, and the phone stalls while it reloads them.

Storage counts just as much. When internal storage is nearly full, the phone slows down whenever it writes data, updates apps or swaps memory.

Stopping the crashes

  1. Restart. Hold the side key and Volume Down, then tap Restart. Memory and stuck processes are cleared.
  2. Update everything. Settings › Software update › Download and install, then update apps in Google Play and Galaxy Store. Developers often fix crashes on a new One UI version within weeks.
  3. Clear the crashing app’s cache in Settings › Apps › [app] › Storage › Clear cache. Still crashing? Use Clear data (you’ll have to log in again), or uninstall and reinstall.
  4. Update Android System WebView and Google Play services from Google Play. Lots of apps depend on them, and one bad version can crash several apps at once.
  5. Reset app preferences in Settings › Apps › ⋮ › Reset app preferences. Default permissions and battery settings come back. Your data stays.
  6. Try Safe Mode. Open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, tap Safe mode. If the crashes stop, a recently installed app is responsible. Remove apps one at a time until you find it.

Freeing space and memory when it hangs

Get storage to 15% free or better. Go to Settings › Device care › Storage. Delete big videos you’ve already backed up, empty the Recycle bin in Gallery and My Files, and clear WhatsApp media you don’t need (WhatsApp › Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage). On a 128GB phone, aim for at least 20GB free.

Switch off RAM Plus. RAM Plus borrows part of your storage as virtual memory. On a slower phone it can cause stutter instead of helping. Go to Settings › Device care › Memory › RAM Plus, turn it off (or pick the smallest size) and restart. Use it like that for a day and compare.

Drop the heavy apps. Uninstall what you rarely open, especially apps that run in the background. Switch to Facebook Lite or Messenger Lite where they exist, or use the website in your browser.

Cut animations. Settings › Accessibility › Visibility enhancements › Reduce animations makes the phone feel quicker. Remove Home screen widgets you don’t look at.

Put background apps to sleep with Settings › Battery › Background usage limits › Put unused apps to sleep. Heavy apps whose notifications you don’t need can go in Deep sleeping apps.

Battery and games

For battery drain, give the phone a few days after an update to finish optimising. Then open Settings › Battery › View details and look for an app using a lot of power in the background. Tap it › Battery › Restricted, or add it to Deep sleeping apps. Use Settings › Battery › Power saving on long days. Where mobile signal is weak, use Wi-Fi, because poor coverage eats battery. Samsung Members › Support › Diagnostics › Battery status tells you how healthy the battery is.

Games are a separate problem. The A16’s chip is built for everyday use, not maximum graphics.

  • Turn down the game’s graphics quality and frame rate.
  • Close other apps before you play, and keep that 15% of storage free.
  • Update the game and Google Play services. Some games break after a One UI update until the developer ships a fix.
  • Don’t game while charging. The extra heat triggers throttling.
  • If a game crashes on launch, clear its cache, then reinstall it.

One UI 9 beta 3 on the A16 5G

Samsung is testing One UI 9 (Android 17) on the Galaxy A16 5G through its beta program. According to Sammy Fans, beta 3 arrived in India on 15 October 2026 as firmware A166PXXU9ZZJ8, about 303MB, with the October 2026 security patch.

It fixes three bugs from the earlier betas:

  • the phone restarting after a software upgrade
  • ultra-wide photos looking green in Gallery
  • photos coming out black with the flash on

Samsung hasn’t given a stable One UI 9 date for the A16 yet. Our One UI 9 rollout tracker will show it when it does. If this is your only phone, wait for the stable release instead of joining the beta.

Buying a cheap used A16

Marketplaces are full of cheap A16s. Check the model number in Settings › About phone and run Samsung Members diagnostics before you pay. Then look up the IMEI. A Samsung Info report confirms the model, region and warranty. A GSMA blacklist check tells you whether it has been reported lost or stolen.

Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

When nothing else works: reset it properly

If the A16 still crashes after everything above, a factory reset clears out settings and data left behind by older One UI versions. Many owners say the phone runs noticeably smoother afterwards.

  1. Back up photos, contacts and WhatsApp chats to Samsung Cloud, Google One, or a PC with Smart Switch.
  2. Check you know your Google account and Samsung account passwords. You’ll need them after the reset.
  3. Go to Settings › General management › Reset › Factory data reset.
  4. Set the phone up as new, and reinstall only the apps you actually use instead of restoring all of them.

Our page on how to factory reset a phone properly goes through each step, including how not to get locked out afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Why do apps keep crashing on my Galaxy A16?

Usually free memory is low after the update, or the app isn’t optimised for the new One UI yet. Update apps, Android System WebView and Google Play services, free some storage and test in Safe Mode.

Why is my Galaxy A16 slow after One UI 8?

The new software and ever-bigger apps need more memory and storage. Keep 15% of storage free, turn off RAM Plus in Settings › Device care › Memory, remove heavy apps and reduce animations.

Does clearing the cache fix Galaxy A16 lag?

It can fix one app, but many owners say it did nothing for the overall slowdown. Freeing storage, turning off RAM Plus and a clean reset work better.

When will the Galaxy A16 get One UI 9?

Samsung hasn’t announced a stable date. The A16 5G is in the beta, and beta 3 reached India on 15 October 2026 with camera and restart fixes.
