Four to five hours. That’s how long some Pixel 8 and 8 Pro units lasted on continuous mobile data, according to PhoneArena in November 2023, and the drain on 4G and 5G is still the first of the Pixel 8 Pro problems people search for. Three years on, the list has grown to include worn batteries, screen colour quirks and slowdowns after big Android updates.

The phone itself still has a long runway, which is why most of these are worth fixing rather than living with.

Is it still worth keeping (or buying)?

At the right price, yes. Google promised the Pixel 8 series seven years of OS and security updates, which takes it to 2030. Compare that with the Pixel 6, whose support ended in October 2026 (our Pixel 6 end of support page has the details). The catch is the battery. On a three-year-old phone, budget for a replacement if the original is tired, and check current prices in our used phone price guide.

Battery falls fast on 4G and 5G

On Wi-Fi the battery is fine. On mobile data it drops quickly, and the phone can get warm in your pocket. PhoneArena called it “déjà vu” after similar complaints on the Pixel 6 and 7, and pointed to the cellular modem, which the Pixel 8 series shares with the Pixel 7 generation. Neowin later reported users saying a Pixel update hadn’t fixed their drain. Weak signal makes any modem work harder, so it’s worse where coverage is poor.

  1. Install the latest update in Settings › System › Software updates.
  2. Use Wi-Fi wherever you can, Wi-Fi Calling included. If your carrier supports it, it’s in Settings › Network & internet › Internet › [your SIM] › Wi-Fi calling.
  3. Set the preferred network type to LTE instead of 5G in the SIM settings. Some owners say it helps; others see no difference.
  4. Look at Settings › Battery › Battery usage and restrict apps with heavy background use.
  5. Turn on Adaptive Battery under Settings › Battery › Adaptive preferences.
  6. Reset mobile settings in Settings › System › Reset options › Reset Mobile Network Settings.

Weak bars and dropped calls

Fewer bars than other phones in the same room, calls that drop, or “No connection” for a few seconds before the signal comes back. Digital Trends listed reception and calling among the most common Pixel 8 and 8 Pro complaints, and noted that carrier coverage plays a part.

  1. Switch Airplane Mode on and off, then restart.
  2. Check for updates. Google has shipped modem and connectivity fixes in monthly releases.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi calling so calls at home and work go over Wi-Fi.
  4. On a physical SIM, ask your carrier for a replacement or move to eSIM. Digital Trends says some owners saw an improvement after switching.
  5. Reset Mobile Network Settings (Settings › System › Reset options).
  6. Borrow a SIM from another carrier. If that network works normally, the problem is coverage or your account. If both fail everywhere, the radio may need repair.

“No SIM” with every card, or an IMEI that has disappeared from Settings › About phone, is a hardware fault. Book a repair instead of resetting again and again.

Running warm

The Tensor G3 heats up under heavy load, on the charger, and when the modem is hunting for signal. A restart clears runaway processes. Battery Saver in Settings › Battery takes the edge off. Avoid long camera or gaming sessions while charging, especially on a wireless charger, and keep the phone out of direct sun and out of thick cases.

If it gets hot while sitting idle on Wi-Fi, back it up, factory reset it and test it before you add your apps back. Heat that persists after that is a hardware case.

Screen colour shifts, dead touch and bumps

Always On Display going yellow, then pink

According to 91mobiles, some Pixel 8 Pro owners on Reddit found that white areas of the Always On Display turned yellow after a few seconds and then reddish-pink, while the screen looked normal at full brightness. It showed up more in low light and on both stable and beta software, which hinted at hardware. Google made no official statement, and some users said they were given replacements.

Update and restart first. If it bothers you, turn off Always show time and info in Settings › Display › Lock screen. If colours are wrong at normal brightness too, the panel is probably faulty and needs repair or replacement.

Touch that lags or ignores you

Digital Trends listed slow or unresponsive touch, mostly on the 8 Pro, among the early issues. Take the screen protector off, update, and boot into Safe Mode (hold the power button, then long-press Power off) to rule out apps. Whole areas that never respond mean a faulty digitiser.

Bumps behind the display

Some early owners spotted small bumps visible behind the screen. On a used phone, assume it could get worse. A green or pink line is always hardware; our page on checking for original screen parts explains what else to look for.

Stutter after Android 17

Android 17 reached Pixels in June 2026. After an update that size the phone re-optimises apps, so a few days of stutter is normal. If it carries on:

  • Keep at least 10 to 15% of storage free (Settings › Storage).
  • Update your apps and Google Play system updates (Settings › Security & privacy › System & updates).
  • Install the October 2026 update. Among other changes, it fixed the keyboard not appearing in search fields on the Pixel 8 and later.
  • Cut back animations and extra widgets for snappier navigation.

What to test on a used Pixel 8 Pro

  • Carrier lock. Lots of Pixel 8 Pros were sold through Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T. Our Pixel carrier unlock check explains what to look for, and a carrier and SIM-lock check gives you the answer from the IMEI.
  • Model and warranty. A Google Pixel Info check confirms model, colour, storage and warranty.
  • Screen. Look at a white and a grey screen at low brightness for tint, lines or the AOD colour shift.
  • Battery. Run it on mobile data for 30 minutes and watch the percentage and the temperature.

Getting the battery replaced

By late 2026 most Pixel 8 Pros have been through hundreds of charge cycles, and lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with age. If yours used to last a day and doesn’t now, wear is the likely reason, not a bug. To slow it, turn on charging optimisation in Settings › Battery (recent builds offer Adaptive Charging or an 80% limit) and avoid heat while charging, so no charging under a pillow or while gaming. If it shuts down at 10 to 20%, or the battery looks swollen, stop using it and book a repair.

A new battery is the cheapest way to keep a Pixel 8 Pro going when the rest of the phone is in good shape. Your options:

  1. Google’s own repair: start at Google’s Pixel repair page or the Pixel Help support flow. Depending on the country, there’s mail-in repair and walk-in repair through authorised partners.
  2. Authorised repair centres use genuine parts and reseal the phone properly, which matters for water resistance.
  3. Independent shops often cost less. Ask whether the battery is genuine and whether they reseal the back.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Pixel 8 Pro battery drain so fast on mobile data?

Some Pixel 8 and 8 Pro units drain quickly on 4G and 5G, which PhoneArena linked to the modem. Use Wi-Fi Calling, try LTE and install the latest update.

How long will the Pixel 8 Pro get updates?

Google promised seven years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 8 series, which runs to 2030.

Why does my Pixel 8 Pro Always On Display turn yellow?

Some owners saw white areas on the AOD turn yellow, then pink, at low brightness. Google made no statement. If it happens at normal brightness too, have the panel checked.

Can I replace the Pixel 8 Pro battery?

Yes. Go through Google’s repair options or an authorised partner for genuine parts, and back up first.
