Every photo from the weekend came out soft, and the streetlights all have a hazy glow around them. A phone camera that’s blurry, won’t focus or opens to a black screen looks like an expensive fault, but most of the time it isn’t. A fingerprint, a case, a magnetic mount, a buggy update or heat is behind a big share of camera problems, and those take minutes to fix.
Start with the quick checks. If those don’t work, the sections after them cover iPhone, Android, and the signs, like a buzzing lens, that mean the module itself needs replacing.
Five-minute checks for any phone
- Clean the lens. Wipe each camera lens with a microfibre cloth. Pocket lint and fingerprints cause soft, hazy shots and halos around lights. This is by far the most common cause.
- Take everything off. Case, lens protectors, magnetic grips, wallets, car mounts. Then test again.
- Tap to focus, and step back. Tap the subject and hold to lock focus. Main cameras often can’t focus closer than about 10 to 15 cm, which is why phones switch to the ultra-wide or macro mode for close-ups.
- Try every lens. Switch between 0.5x, 1x and telephoto. If only one is blurry, the fault is in that module.
- Restart. A stuck camera process causes black screens and frozen previews.
- Let it cool if the phone is hot or showing a temperature warning.
Selfies soft but the rear camera is fine
The selfie camera sits under the screen glass, so the screen protector is the usual suspect: a cheap tempered-glass one with a slightly misaligned cut-out, dust trapped underneath, or adhesive over the lens. Peel the protector back near the camera and test. Many front cameras are also fixed-focus, so holding the phone too close gives blur that no setting can fix. Hold it at arm’s length and compare.
Why a camera goes blurry in the first place
Phone cameras have moving parts. Autofocus shifts the lens with tiny motors, and optical image stabilisation (OIS) suspends the lens or sensor on magnets and springs to cancel out hand shake. Besides a dirty lens or protector, blur comes from shooting closer than the main lens can focus, cases and magnetic accessories that block the lens or upset the OIS and focus magnets, software bugs in the camera app or image processing (often after an update), overheating that throttles or switches off the camera, and physical damage from a drop, vibration or moisture.
It started after an update
Big releases often bring camera bugs, and the next patch usually fixes them. Some recent ones:
- iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: iOS 27.0.1 (28 September 2026) fixed a colour artifact that could show up in photos taken at 2x in certain lighting at f/1.48 on a small number of units.
- Pixel 11: according to TechRepublic, Google’s October 2026 Pixel update fixed photos and videos occasionally saving in the wrong orientation.
- OnePlus 15: Notebookcheck reported in November 2025 that in one reviewer’s test the phone reached about 50°C while recording, stopped recording and disabled the camera for five minutes.
Install the next update as soon as it shows up. iPhone: Settings › General › Software Update. Samsung: Settings › Software update. Pixel: Settings › System › Software updates. Where the camera app is listed separately in the Play Store or Galaxy Store, update that too.
iPhone camera blurry or black
- Update iOS. iPhone 18 Pro owners need 27.0.1 or later for the 2x artifact fix.
- Check Macro Control. On models with automatic macro, Settings › Camera › Macro Control turns auto-switching on or off. If close-ups jump between lenses or look soft, try the other setting.
- Check Lock Camera. Settings › Camera › Record Video › Lock Camera stops the lens switching mid-recording. Make sure it’s set the way you want.
- Force-quit Camera by swiping it away in the app switcher, then open it again.
- Try another app, such as a video call. Black in every app means it isn’t the Camera app.
- Look at Parts and Service History in Settings › General › About. A camera listed as an unknown part suggests a non-genuine replacement.
- Reset All Settings (Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset) if a setting might be to blame.
Apple warns that high-amplitude vibration, for example from mounting an iPhone on a high-power motorcycle, can degrade the OIS and autofocus systems. If your iPhone has been riding on a motorbike mount and now won’t focus, that’s a likely explanation.
Android: “Camera failed” and black previews
- Close anything else using the camera. Video calls, scanners and torch apps can hold it open.
- Check permission and privacy toggles: Settings › Security & privacy › Privacy › Camera access on Pixel and many other phones, or the camera toggle in quick settings. With it off, apps show a black preview.
- Clear the Camera app cache: Settings › Apps › Camera › Storage › Clear cache. If that fails, Clear data. That resets camera settings, not your photos.
- Boot into Safe Mode. If the camera works there, a third-party app is the conflict, often a screen recorder, filter or overlay app.
- Run the brand’s hardware test. On Galaxy phones that’s Samsung Members › Support › Phone diagnostics, or
*#0*#, which includes front and rear camera tests. - Reset app preferences, or factory reset after backing up, if nothing else works.
Xiaomi, Motorola and most other brands also have a Camera entry under Settings › Apps, so the cache and permission steps work on almost any Android phone.
Buzzing, rattling or a wobbling picture
A preview that jitters, a lens that buzzes, or a rattle when you gently shake the phone can mean the stabilisation mechanism is damaged. Some soft clicking with the camera off can be normal on certain phones, because an unpowered OIS lens moves freely. Constant buzzing with the camera open, a shaking preview, or focus that keeps hunting back and forth is not normal.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hazy, soft photos | Dirty lens or protector | Clean lens; remove lens protector |
| Only close-ups blurry | Below minimum focus distance | Move back or use macro mode |
| Blur only with case on | Magnetic accessory or case | Remove it or use a different case |
| Black screen in all apps | Privacy toggle, app conflict or hardware | Check permissions, Safe Mode, diagnostics |
| Camera turns off when hot | Thermal protection | Let it cool; avoid recording in the sun while charging |
| Started after an update | Software bug | Install the next update |
| Buzzing, shaking preview | Damaged OIS or focus module | Camera module repair |
| Fog inside lens | Moisture | Dry, then diagnose for water damage |
Getting the module replaced
Software can’t fix a broken OIS or autofocus unit, but the camera module can usually be replaced on its own. Before paying for it:
- Dial
*#06#and run a free All-in-one Basic Info check to confirm the model and warranty. - iPhone: an iPhone warranty check shows your coverage, and a full GSX report lists past repairs.
- Galaxy: a Samsung Info report. Pixel: a Google Pixel Info check.
- Go to an authorised repairer so you get a genuine module. Our guide to checking original parts shows how to confirm it afterwards.
Testing the camera on a used phone
Before you buy second-hand, give every lens a proper go:
- Take a close-up, a distant shot and a photo at each zoom level.
- Record a short video while walking, and listen for buzzing.
- Hold the phone up to the light and look for haze inside the lens glass.
- On an iPhone, open Parts and Service History. On Android, run the brand’s camera test.
- Check the IMEI and warranty status.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my phone camera suddenly blurry?
Usually a dirty lens, a case or magnetic accessory, or shooting too close for the main lens. Clean it, take accessories off and tap to focus; if it’s still blurry, test each lens and update.
Why does my camera show a black screen?
Another app may be holding the camera, the privacy toggle may be off, or the Camera app needs its cache cleared. Black in every app and in Safe Mode points to hardware.
Can magnetic accessories affect the camera?
Strong non-MagSafe magnets can interfere with focus and stabilisation while attached. Apple also warns that high-amplitude vibration, such as from motorcycle mounts, can degrade iPhone OIS and autofocus.
Why does the camera turn off when the phone gets hot?
Thermal protection. In one test reported by Notebookcheck, a OnePlus 15 stopped recording at about 50°C and disabled the camera for five minutes.
What does a buzzing or shaking camera mean?
A constant buzz, shaking preview or focus that keeps hunting points to a damaged stabilisation or autofocus unit, which needs a camera module repair.
