Your iPhone trade in value in October 2026 depends mostly on where you trade it. Apple currently pays up to $885 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max and $610 for an iPhone 16 Pro Max, while Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T advertise up to $1,200 off an iPhone 18 Pro — but only as monthly bill credits that tie you to a plan for up to 36 months. Selling privately usually gets the most cash, with the most effort and risk.

This guide compares all four routes with current numbers, explains when values drop, and walks through the seven reasons trade-ins get rejected — with a way to check each one before you ship your phone.

How much is my iPhone worth right now?

Apple publishes “up to” trade-in values for every model, and they move several times a year. On 6 August 2026 Apple raised its values, with some devices up by nearly 30% compared with May (reported by MacRumors). Then, right after the iPhone 18 Pro event on 9 September, Apple cut iPhone values again — by as much as $120 on some models, according to 9to5Mac.

Here are Apple’s US trade-in values after the September 2026 update, as reported by 9to5Mac. They are maximums for a phone in good working condition; Apple confirms the final amount after inspection.

ModelApple value before (Aug 2026)Apple value now (Sep 2026)
iPhone 17 Pro Max—up to $885
iPhone 17 Pro—up to $785
iPhone Air / iPhone 17—up to $585
iPhone 16 Pro Max$720up to $610
iPhone 16 Pro$630up to $510
iPhone 16 / 16 Plus$480 / $485up to $430
iPhone 16e$310up to $270
iPhone 15 Pro Max$530up to $455
iPhone 15 Pro$420up to $370
iPhone 15$335up to $305
iPhone 14 Pro Max$405up to $360
iPhone 14$235up to $195
iPhone 13 Pro Max$340up to $320
iPhone 13$205up to $175
iPhone 12$135up to $120
iPhone 11$110up to $100

Four things change the number you actually get: the exact model, the storage size, the condition, and whether the phone is fully unlocked and clean. Storage matters more than many people expect, so check it in Settings › General › iPhone Storage before you ask for quotes. If you don’t know your exact model or capacity, a free All-in-one Basic Info check reads it from the IMEI or serial number, along with Find My status.

Apple trade-in vs carrier trade-in vs selling

There are four realistic ways to turn an old iPhone into money. Each wins in a different situation.

1. Apple Trade In

Apple gives you instant credit toward a new device or an Apple Gift Card. The estimate is valid for 14 days after you receive your new device, and the credit is confirmed once Apple receives the old phone and verifies the condition. There is no plan to sign and no lock-in. Values are fair but rarely the highest — think of Apple as the convenient, low-risk floor.

2. Carrier trade-in (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T)

Carriers pay the most on paper, especially at launch, because they’re buying your loyalty. The catch is how the money arrives: as monthly bill credits on a device payment plan, not cash. Stop the plan, pay off the phone early, or leave the carrier, and the remaining credits usually disappear.

3. Buyback sites

Comparison and buyback sites (SellCell, Decluttr, Gazelle, BankMyCell, ecoATM kiosks and similar) pay cash by bank transfer, PayPal or check. Prices are usually between Apple’s and a private sale. Most lock your quote for a set period and inspect the phone on arrival, just like Apple.

4. Private sale

Selling on Swappa, eBay or Facebook Marketplace typically gets the highest cash price, because you keep the margin a reseller would take. In return you handle photos, questions, payment risk and meeting strangers. Our guide to selling your phone safely covers payment scams and safe meetups, and the used phone price guide shows how to price it.

T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T iPhone 18 trade-in deals

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max went on sale on 18 September 2026 at $1,199 and $1,299. At launch, all three big carriers advertised up to $1,200 off with a trade-in, according to Android Authority’s round-up of the offers:

  • T-Mobile: up to $1,200 off with an eligible trade-in “in any condition” or a line switch on Experience Beyond 2.0, Experience Beyond or Go5G Next. Cheaper plans get less: up to $930 on Experience More tiers, and as little as $300 on Essentials. T-Mobile’s own offer page describes the savings as up to 36 monthly bill credits.
  • Verizon: up to $1,200 off when adding a new myPlan line with a qualified trade-in, or $1,020 when upgrading an existing line. Verizon applies the savings as monthly promo credits over a 36-month device payment plan.
  • AT&T: $1,200 off when you upgrade on AT&T Next Up Anytime or switch and trade in an iPhone in any condition, plus up to $800 toward paying off your old carrier’s device balance when you switch.

“Any condition” is generous — even a cracked iPhone can qualify — but read the fine print. T-Mobile’s terms say that if you cancel before receiving all bill credits, the credits stop and the remaining device balance becomes due, and that credits end if you pay off the device early. Verizon and AT&T work the same way. Promotions also change often, so check the live terms on the day you order.

When do trade-in values drop?

The pattern is predictable: values slide in the run-up to Apple’s September launch and drop again right after it.

  • Between announcement and release. A SellCell study reported by MacRumors on 25 August 2026 found that 75% of tracked models (117 of 156) lost value in the roughly ten days between Apple’s announcement and launch day in recent years. In the iPhone 17 cycle, 50 of 54 models dropped, by an average of $36.46. The biggest single fall was an iPhone 16 Plus 512 GB, from $695 to $566.
  • In the month after the event. UK comparison site Uswitch found trade-in values fall by an average of 9% in the month after Apple’s September announcement.
  • Year over year. Uswitch’s September 2026 data showed an iPhone 14 down 59% in a year, while the iPhone 15 had lost 24%. Pro models have held value better in 2026, partly because the standard iPhone 18 isn’t expected until spring 2027.
  • Apple’s own updates. Apple raised values in August 2026 and cut them by up to $120 on 9 September.

The practical lesson: lock in a quote before the event if you can. Many buyback sites and Apple hold an estimate for around 14 days. SellCell’s survey found 61.4% of US iPhone users keep their old phone until the new one is set up — which is sensible for data transfer, but it costs money if you wait to request a quote. Request the quote early, then send the phone once you’ve moved your data.

Why was my trade-in rejected? The 7 common reasons

Most rejections, or “re-graded” offers that come back far lower, happen for the same handful of reasons. Verizon’s trade-in terms, for example, list a device that still has Find My on, has been reported lost or stolen, has an active device payment balance, is not unlocked, has a damaged battery, doesn’t match your description, or arrives more than 30 days after the order. Other programs use very similar rules.

1. Find My (Activation Lock) is still on

This is the number-one reason. A phone with Activation Lock can’t be reset and resold, so it’s rejected or valued at almost nothing. Turn off Find My and sign out of your Apple Account before you ship — our step-by-step guide covers it, including the Stolen Device Protection delay. Then confirm it from the outside with a Find My status check.

2. The IMEI is blacklisted

If the IMEI has been reported lost or stolen — even by mistake, or by a previous owner — every legitimate trade-in program will refuse it. If you bought the phone used, run a GSMA blacklist check before you trade it. A listed phone can only be cleared by whoever reported it, usually the original owner or carrier; see what a blacklisted IMEI means.

3. There’s still a finance balance

A phone on an active installment plan isn’t fully yours yet. Carriers generally won’t accept their own financed phones for trade-in unless a promotion specifically allows it, and an unpaid balance can lead to the IMEI being blocked later, which makes buyback sites reject it too.

4. It’s carrier-locked

Many programs require an unlocked phone or pay much less for a locked one. On the iPhone, go to Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock: it should say No SIM restrictions. A carrier and SIM-lock check shows the lock status and which carrier the phone belongs to. The locked vs unlocked guide explains how to request an unlock legally.

5. It’s enrolled in MDM (company-managed)

Work phones and devices bought through a business are often registered in Apple Business Manager. Even after an erase, they can show a Remote Management screen during setup. Buyers and inspectors treat that as a locked device. An MDM status check tells you whether the phone is still enrolled; only the organization can release it. More in what an MDM lock is.

6. Cracked screen, damaged battery or water damage

Cosmetic wear is normal, but a cracked front or back, a dead pixel area, a swollen battery or liquid damage usually drops the grade by a full category. Be honest in the questionnaire. Uswitch’s advice is the same: describe the condition truthfully, because quotes generally only change if the phone is significantly worse than described. Even damaged phones often still fetch a modest amount.

7. Non-genuine or unknown parts

Inspectors look at Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History. A screen, battery or camera flagged as an Unknown Part can reduce the value or cause a rejection at some buyers. See how to check for original screen and parts and battery health and parts history.

Can you trade in a financed or blacklisted phone?

Financed: sometimes. Carriers often run switching offers that pay off your old carrier’s balance — AT&T’s launch offer included up to $800 for this — and some promotions accept your current financed phone as the trade-in. Outside those promos, pay the phone off first. Apple and buyback sites generally expect a fully paid, unlocked device.

Blacklisted: no, not through any legitimate channel. If the phone is yours and was reported in error, contact the carrier that blocked it with your proof of purchase and ask them to remove the report. If you bought it used and it’s now listed, our guide to getting a blacklisted phone cleared explains the legal options. Never pay for “unbarring” services — they don’t remove the record, and you may be dealing in stolen property.

Best place to trade in an iPhone: a quick decision guide

  1. Staying with your carrier for 3 years and want the newest Pro? The carrier promo is usually the best value — but only on the plan it requires.
  2. Buying from Apple and want zero hassle? Apple Trade In: instant credit, no plan, fair price.
  3. Want cash and the phone is in great shape? Sell privately on a reputable marketplace for the best price.
  4. Want cash without meeting anyone? Compare buyback sites and lock in the best quote.
  5. Phone is badly damaged? Carrier “any condition” offers, or Apple’s recycling program if the value is zero.

Checklist before you send your iPhone

  1. Note the exact model and storage, and get at least three quotes the same day.
  2. Run a free All-in-one check to confirm model, capacity and Find My status.
  3. Run blacklist, carrier-lock and MDM checks if you bought the phone used.
  4. Back up and transfer your data — see back up before selling.
  5. Remove your eSIM or physical SIM, and unpair your Apple Watch.
  6. Turn off Find My, sign out of your Apple Account, then erase the phone (how to factory reset properly).
  7. Photograph the screen, back and frame, and record the IMEI, before you pack it.
  8. Ship within the deadline (Verizon allows 30 days) with tracking, and keep the receipt.
Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

A few minutes of checking before you ship protects you from the most frustrating outcome of all: a re-graded offer weeks later, when your quote has expired and values have fallen again.

Frequently asked questions

How much is my iPhone worth in trade-in?

After Apple’s September 2026 update, Apple offers up to $885 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max, $610 for a 16 Pro Max and $305 for an iPhone 15. Carriers can offer more as bill credits, and private sales usually pay the most cash.

Is Apple trade-in or carrier trade-in better?

Carrier trade-ins pay more on paper but spread the value over 24–36 months of bill credits and require a specific plan. Apple Trade In pays less but gives instant credit with no lock-in.

When do iPhone trade-in values drop?

Values usually slide between Apple’s September announcement and launch day, then fall around 9% in the following month. Lock in a quote before the event if you can.

Why was my trade-in rejected?

The most common reasons are Find My still on, a blacklisted IMEI, an unpaid finance balance, a carrier lock, MDM enrollment, damage that was not declared, or unknown replacement parts.

Can I trade in a phone that isn’t paid off?

Only through specific carrier promotions that accept financed phones or pay off your old balance. Otherwise, pay it off first; Apple and buyback sites expect a fully owned, unlocked device.

Can I trade in a blacklisted iPhone?

No legitimate trade-in program accepts a blacklisted IMEI. If it was reported by mistake, the carrier that blocked it must remove the report.

Do I need to turn off Find My before trading in?

Yes. Apple and the carriers require Find My to be off; a phone with Activation Lock is rejected or valued far lower.
