One Australian owner says the inner screen of his iPhone Duo cracked after fewer than 20 folds. A Reddit user reported a crack within six hours. Apple’s first foldable only went on sale on 23 October 2026, and the early iPhone Duo problems are already piling up: cracks and bright lines near the hinge, a crease you can feel, and a setup screen that won’t let you in until you install an update.
If you’ve just spent $1,999 or more on one, you want to know which of these is a defect, which is normal, and what Apple will cover. We’re sticking to verified reports and Apple’s own information here, and we’ll update the page as more owners report in.
Cracks or bright lines on the inner screen
Digital Trends (23 October 2026), following MacRumors, collected reports from Australia, the US, Canada and China of cracks or bright lines on the inner display, close to the hinge. Several put the damage in a similar spot. The Australian owner said there was no visible damage before it cracked, and at least one failure reportedly happened while the phone was being opened.
The cause isn’t known. Reddit users think the panel may be pinched from inside near the hinge. Others suspect assembly tolerances or a faulty hinge part. Digital Trends points out that some reviewers folded their units over and over without trouble, and says it’s too early to tell a bad batch from a wider hardware issue. Apple hasn’t said anything publicly.
First-generation foldables have a history here. Early display failures hit several generations of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold too.
If it happens to yours:
- Stop folding it. More folds can spread the crack and make diagnosis harder.
- Photograph and film it. Get the damage, the hinge and the outer body, so it’s obvious there are no drop marks.
- Write down the date and roughly how many times you’d folded it, and keep the receipt.
- Contact Apple straight away through the Apple Support app, an Apple Store or your retailer. Apple replaced the Australian owner’s phone. In the US, the standard return window for purchases from Apple is 14 days.
- Confirm your coverage with an iPhone warranty check, or follow our steps for checking warranty by IMEI or serial, so you know the device is registered and covered.
The crease you can feel
Every foldable with one flexible panel has a crease, and the Duo is no exception. Notebookcheck (20 October 2026), citing a hands-on video shared from Weibo, said the Duo’s crease is barely visible when nothing is touching the screen but noticeably soft and easy to feel when your finger runs across it.
That softness is a design choice. Instead of ultra-thin glass on top, the inner display has a softer, nano-texture cover layer. And that layer is meant to be swapped. Apple’s VP of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron called it “actually replaceable”, and according to Tom’s Guide an AppleCare service listing prices a cover-layer replacement at $19 under AppleCare+, with inner-display damage at $99. Apple hasn’t published prices for owners without AppleCare+.
To keep the crease and hinge in good shape:
- Skip any screen protector not made for folding displays. Rigid film can lift at the fold and stress the panel.
- Leave the factory cover layer alone. Have Apple replace it when it wears.
- Close the phone gently, and don’t carry it in a pocket with keys, coins or grit. One particle caught between the halves can dent the soft layer.
- Use a case that covers the hinge spine, and don’t press on the fold with a fingernail or stylus.
Setup won’t continue until iOS 27.1 updates
You get to a “Software Update” step and there’s no Skip button. On launch day the download was slow for a lot of people.
The Duo ships with iOS 27.1 (build 24A94232). MacRumors reports that Apple released a newer iOS 27.1 build, 24A94425, on 22 October, and setup requires it. The notes mention only unspecified bug fixes. iOS 27.1 exists only for the Duo. Other iPhones skipped it and are on the iOS 27.2 track, and the iOS 27.2 Release Candidate already supports the Duo, with the final release expected around the end of October.
- Use fast, stable Wi-Fi. Hotel and captive-portal networks are a bad idea here.
- Keep the phone on a charger. Updates pause below about 50% battery.
- If the download stalls, restart (volume up, volume down, then hold the side button) and try again.
- Still stuck? Set it up from a Mac with Finder or a PC with Apple Devices, which installs the current build.
- Restoring a backup? Backups made on a beta newer than the Duo’s current release can fail to restore. If your old iPhone is on the iOS 27.2 beta, move it back to a public release first.
Touch ID keeps missing your finger
The Duo unlocks with Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID. It’s the first new iPhone with Touch ID in years, so plenty of owners haven’t enrolled a fingerprint since an iPhone 8 or SE. Most misses come down to enrolment.
- Go to Settings › Touch ID & Passcode and add the finger again, rolling it across the button so the edges get captured.
- Add the same finger a second time as a separate print. Recognition gets noticeably better.
- Enrol a finger from each hand. You hold the phone differently open and closed.
- Keep the button clean and dry. Lotion and sweat both hurt reliability.
If Touch ID won’t enrol at all, or Settings says it’s unavailable, contact Apple. The sensor is paired to the phone’s Secure Enclave and only Apple can service it.
The basics, in case you’re still deciding
The Duo went on sale on 23 October 2026 in the US and more than 70 other countries and regions, with 28 more following on 30 October, according to MacRumors. US prices are $1,999 (256GB), $2,199 (512GB), $2,599 (1TB) and $3,199 (2TB), in Star White or Night Sky. It’s 5.4 inches closed and 7.6 inches open, and eSIM-only. The iPhone Duo specs and security breakdown covers the hardware properly, and the iPhone Duo pre-order guide has purchase and carrier options if you’re still waiting for stock.
AppleCare+, returns and warranty claims
On a phone at this price, AppleCare+ deserves a hard look. It covers accidental damage, inner screen included, for a service fee, and the $19 cover-layer fee makes long-term crease wear cheap to deal with.
Inside the return window you can simply send the phone back. After that, defects that weren’t caused by damage fall under Apple’s one-year limited warranty. Keep your photos and receipt together in case you need them later.
Checking an open-box or second-hand Duo
Open-box and resold units are already turning up. A replaced inner display or hinge doesn’t show in photos, so check in person:
- Run the free All-in-one Basic Info check to confirm the model and warranty date, and that Find My is off.
- Open Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History, and order a full GSX report to see any replacements.
- Fold and unfold it slowly in good light. Look for lines, dead pixels and uneven patches along the crease.
- Run a GSMA blacklist check. New foldables are a theft target.
Frequently asked questions
Is the iPhone Duo inner screen cracking a known problem?
Owners in Australia, the US, Canada and China have reported cracks or bright lines near the hinge, according to Digital Trends. Apple hasn’t commented publicly but replaced at least one affected unit.
What should I do if my iPhone Duo screen cracks?
Stop folding it, photograph the damage and the undamaged outer body, and contact Apple or your retailer as soon as you can, ideally inside the return window.
Is the iPhone Duo crease normal?
Yes, every single-panel foldable has one. On the Duo it’s barely visible at rest but easy to feel. The cover layer can be replaced for $19 with AppleCare+, according to Tom’s Guide.
Why does my iPhone Duo need an update during setup?
It ships with iOS 27.1 build 24A94232, and setup requires the newer build 24A94425. Use stable Wi-Fi and keep the phone on a charger.
