You install iOS 27, open WhatsApp, and the scrolling feels sticky on a phone with a 120Hz screen. That is the iPhone 17 Pro Max problem people have complained about most this autumn, and it usually sits alongside faster battery drain and a phone that runs warm on the charger.

The 17 Pro Max came out in September 2025 with the A19 Pro chip, a vapor-chamber cooling system and an aluminium unibody in place of the titanium frame of earlier Pro models. So most launch units are now past Apple’s standard one-year warranty. Check your cover before you book anything.

Most of what follows is software, and you can fix it at home in under an hour. The rest is hardware or cosmetic, and we say so where it applies.

Stutter and jank after iOS 27

The symptom is easy to spot: swipes between screens hitch, some apps drop frames, and the phone no longer feels as smooth as ProMotion should. Cybernews collected user reports after iOS 27 launched in September 2026. One iPhone 17 Pro Max owner told them the jank and slower frame rates showed up mostly in Reddit, WhatsApp and Wallet.

That pattern points to two things. After a major update the phone rebuilds its search index, re-scans the photo library and updates apps in the background. Apple’s iOS 26.6 update had already started preparing the Spotlight index for iOS 27, and that work carries on after the jump. The other cause is the apps themselves. One that hasn’t been updated for the new system can stutter while everything else is fine.

Work through this in order:

  1. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and on charge overnight for two to four nights so indexing can finish.
  2. Update every app in the App Store, starting with the ones that stutter.
  3. Install the latest iOS in Settings › General › Software Update. iOS 27.0.1 (28 September 2026) fixed a touchscreen freeze that happened when Notification Center and Control Center were opened together.
  4. Force restart: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  5. Still choppy? Turn on Settings › Accessibility › Motion › Reduce Motion.
  6. If a week has passed and nothing has helped, back up and go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Erase All Content and Settings. Set it up as new instead of restoring everything at once.

Other models have their own iOS 27 quirks, collected in our iOS 27 problems and fixes page.

Where the battery is going

This one started before iOS 27. In an Apple Community thread from March 2026, an owner described heat, drain and lag on a 17 Pro Max after iOS 26.3 and 26.4, and dozens of people clicked “Me too”. A community member replying in that thread suspected a single app. The original poster had trading apps open on screen all day.

That is the usual story. Post-update background work accounts for the first couple of days, and one hungry app accounts for most of what happens after that.

  1. Open Settings › Battery and look at activity by app for the last 24 hours and the last 10 days. Update, restrict or delete whatever sits at the top.
  2. In Settings › General › Background App Refresh, switch it off for apps that don’t need it.
  3. If you never look at the Always On Display, turn it off in Settings › Display & Brightness.
  4. Check Settings › Battery › Battery Health. A healthy one-year-old Pro Max should still be well above 80%.
  5. Drain that began right after restoring an old backup often goes away with a clean setup.

Hot on the charger, hot on 5G

The back and frame get hot while charging, gaming, navigating or using 5G. In bad cases you get a “Charging On Hold” notice or the screen dims itself.

The vapor chamber moves heat away from the chip well, but aluminium also makes that heat easy to feel in your hand. Fast charging, a game and weak 5G signal at the same time all stack up. BGR’s round-up of iPhone 17 issues also mentions extra heat during 5G use or charging.

  1. Don’t game or record 4K video while fast charging. If it gets hot on the charger, take the case off.
  2. Where coverage is weak, set Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data Options › Voice & Data to 5G Auto or LTE.
  3. Set a charge limit in Settings › Battery › Charging. 80% cuts the time spent at high charge, and the heat that comes with it.
  4. Look for hot apps in Settings › Battery and update or remove them.

A phone that gets hot while idle, with nothing running, is a different matter. Ask Apple Support to run diagnostics.

Bars drop, or T-Satellite won’t connect

Early iPhone 17 models had cellular, Bluetooth and CarPlay disconnects, which Apple fixed in iOS 26.0.1. Later, PhoneArena covered an isolated report of a 17 Pro Max that wouldn’t connect to T-Mobile’s T-Satellite while the same owner’s 16 Pro Max worked in the same spot.

If calls fail or the signal keeps dropping:

  1. Update iOS, then open Settings › General › About. If a carrier settings update is waiting, a prompt appears.
  2. Turn Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds, then off.
  3. Reset network settings in Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. You’ll have to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords.
  4. For eSIM trouble, ask your carrier to reissue the eSIM.
  5. A used phone that rejects your carrier outright may simply be locked. Run a carrier and SIM-lock check before you assume it’s faulty.

Two charging oddities: dead at 0% and a hissing speaker

Some owners say that once the battery hits 0%, the phone won’t start charging over USB-C. Nobody has pinned down why. What works is a few minutes on a MagSafe or other wireless charger, after which the cable charges normally again. Try a different USB-C cable and a 20W-plus adapter as well. If it keeps happening, book a hardware test.

The second report is a faint hiss or static from the speaker while the phone is plugged in. It stops the moment you unplug. Cheap chargers can add electrical noise, so test another cable and charger first. If the hiss is still there with Apple or MFi-certified gear, contact Apple Support.

The frame: pink orange, dents and “Scratchgate”

None of this changes how the phone works. It changes what it’s worth when you sell it.

  • Cosmic Orange going pink. Some frames have reportedly shifted colour. UV exposure or peroxide-based cleaners are suspected, but the cause hasn’t been confirmed and there is no fix. Clean it with a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth and keep harsh chemicals away from it.
  • Dents. The aluminium unibody can dent at the corners, even inside a case. A dent can’t be repaired. Fixing the frame means a replacement part or a replacement phone.
  • “Scratchgate”. Apple said the marks on store demo units were mostly material rubbed off MagSafe stands, and that it wipes away. Real scratches on the edges of the camera plateau are permanent.

Taking it to Apple

Book a repair if the phone gets hot while idle, won’t charge on any charger, hisses on every charger you try, or loses signal in places where other phones are fine. Apple’s limited warranty runs one year from purchase. Longer statutory rights apply in the UK and EU, and AppleCare+ extends cover.

Before you go, run an iPhone warranty check so you know where you stand. Our page on checking warranty by IMEI or serial shows the other ways to do it. If you suspect an earlier repair, the battery health and parts history guide explains how to see whether the battery or screen has been replaced.

Buying a used 17 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro is out, so plenty of 17 Pro Max units are being sold on. If you’re still deciding between the two, read our iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro comparison. Before you hand over money:

  • Run an Apple full GSX report. It confirms the model, purchase country, warranty, lock and Find My status.
  • Open Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History and look for non-genuine parts.
  • Make sure Find My is off and the phone isn’t carrier-locked or blacklisted.
  • Look at the corners and camera plateau for dents and scratches, as above.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone 17 Pro Max laggy after iOS 27?

Usually the phone is still indexing in the background, or one app hasn’t been updated for iOS 27. Leave it charging on Wi-Fi for a few nights, update apps and iOS, then force restart.

Does iOS 27 drain the iPhone 17 Pro Max battery?

Faster drain is normal for a few days after any major update. If it carries on, Settings › Battery will usually show one app using most of the energy.

Why is my Cosmic Orange iPhone turning pink?

Some frames have reportedly shifted toward pink. UV exposure or peroxide cleaners are suspected but not confirmed, and there is no fix.

My iPhone 17 Pro Max won’t charge from 0%. What now?

Put it on a MagSafe or wireless charger for a few minutes, then go back to the cable. If it keeps happening, book an Apple hardware test.

Is my iPhone 17 Pro Max still under warranty?

Apple’s standard warranty is one year, so many launch units have run out unless AppleCare+ was bought. You can check with the IMEI or serial number.
