Settings says Maximum Capacity is 81%, the keyboard lags half a second behind your thumbs, and the phone is warm after ten minutes of scrolling. Those are the iPhone 14 problems most owners are dealing with in 2026, four years after it came out. They are the problems of an ageing phone, and nearly all of them trace back to one of two things: the battery, or a newer iOS asking more of an older chip.

Working out which one you have decides whether you spend nothing, about $99, or the price of a new phone.

Battery health that keeps falling

This complaint started early. In 2023, just before the iPhone 15 launched, TechRadar reported “mounting reports” that iPhone 14 and 14 Pro batteries were losing maximum capacity faster than owners expected. Some phones were well under 90% after their first year. Apple Community threads still carry the same story today.

The main reason is the rating. Apple says batteries in the iPhone 14 and earlier are designed to keep 80% of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles. From the iPhone 15 on, Apple rates them for 80% at 1,000 cycles. A four-year-old iPhone 14 that has been charged most days has often gone past 500.

Heat makes it worse. Gaming on the charger, wireless charging inside a thick case and leaving the phone in a hot car wear a battery faster than anything else you do with it.

One caveat from TechRadar: the health meter isn’t perfectly precise. A drop of a few percent right after an update doesn’t always mean the battery suddenly got worse.

Where to look

  1. Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging shows Maximum Capacity.
  2. A Service message, or a note under “Peak Performance Capability”, means the battery is worn enough to affect performance.
  3. Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History appears if the battery, screen or camera has been replaced. It tells you whether each part is a “Genuine Apple Part” or an “Unknown Part”.

Each of those messages is explained in our article on iPhone battery health and Parts and Service History.

You can slow further wear. Turn on Optimized Battery Charging in Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging, take thick cases off for overnight or wireless charging, don’t game or navigate while fast charging, and keep the phone out of the sun. None of that brings capacity back, though. Once it’s under about 80%, a new battery is the fix.

Lag and stutter after iOS 27

The iPhone 14 is on the list for iOS 27 (see which iPhones get iOS 27), but its A15 Bionic is four generations old. In the first days after a big update, owners notice keyboard lag, apps that open slowly, choppy animations and a phone that’s warm while doing nothing.

Part of that is temporary. After a major update iOS re-indexes photos, messages and mail for search and downloads new assets in the background. Apple Community moderators and Apple’s own battery guidance describe this as normal for a few days.

The other part isn’t. With a worn battery, iOS can apply performance management so the phone doesn’t shut down unexpectedly, and that makes it feel slow all the time, not just after updates.

  1. Leave it on Wi-Fi and on charge overnight for two or three nights.
  2. Install the latest point release from Settings › General › Software Update. Bug-fix releases often carry performance fixes.
  3. Restart to clear anything stuck.
  4. Turn on Reduce Motion in Settings › Accessibility › Motion. Animations get shorter and the phone feels quicker.
  5. Switch off Background App Refresh for apps that don’t need it (Settings › General › Background App Refresh).
  6. Keep 10–15% of storage free. Check it in Settings › General › iPhone Storage.
  7. Last resort: Reset All Settings under Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset. Your data stays, your preferences don’t.

When warm turns into overheating

Warm after an update or a long video call is fine. The temperature warning, a dimmed screen or charging that pauses at 80% is the phone telling you something is off.

Open Settings › Battery and find the app with odd background activity, then update or reinstall it. In Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services, move apps from “Always” to “While Using”. Charge without a case, using an Apple or MFi-certified charger, and close camera, navigation and game apps you aren’t using.

If it still overheats at idle more than a week after an update, back up and ask Apple Support to run diagnostics.

A badly worn or swollen battery runs hot too. If the screen is lifting at one edge or the back looks raised, stop charging it and book a repair.

No SIM tray: eSIM trouble on US models

US iPhone 14 models have no physical SIM tray at all. They only take eSIM. Models sold in most other countries, the UK included, still have a nano-SIM tray.

That catches people out in two ways. When you change carrier, you activate an eSIM through the carrier’s app, a QR code or eSIM Quick Transfer during setup instead of moving a card. And abroad you can’t pop in a local SIM, though you can add a travel eSIM next to your main line.

“No SIM” or “SIM Not Supported”? Check Settings › Cellular, restart, and ask the carrier to reissue the eSIM. On a used phone, “SIM Not Supported” can also mean it’s carrier-locked, so check the lock status before you blame the eSIM.

Battery, repair or upgrade?

When the iPhone 14 launched, Apple raised its out-of-warranty battery price to $99 in the US and £105 in the UK, according to 9to5Mac. With AppleCare+, the battery is replaced free once it’s under 80%. Apple changes its prices from time to time, so get the current quote from Apple’s repair page before booking.

Checking a used iPhone 14 before you pay

A used iPhone 14 is a cheap way into iOS 27 this year. Go through this list with the seller:

  • Dial *#06# and confirm the IMEI matches Settings › General › About.
  • Read Maximum Capacity and look in Parts and Service History for replaced or unknown parts.
  • Make sure Find My is off and the phone isn’t blacklisted. A free All-in-one basic IMEI check is a good first step.
  • For repairs, warranty and activation details, run an Apple full GSX report.
  • If it’s a US eSIM-only model, it has to be unlocked and able to activate on your carrier.
Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone 14 battery health dropping so fast?

iPhone 14 batteries are rated to keep 80% capacity at 500 cycles, half the rating of the iPhone 15 and later. Daily charging, heat and fast charging during heavy use speed it up.

Is the iPhone 14 still worth using in 2026?

For most people, yes. It runs iOS 27 and copes with everyday apps, especially with a healthy battery.

How much does an iPhone 14 battery replacement cost?

Apple charged $99 in the US and £105 in the UK when the iPhone 14 launched, and it’s free with AppleCare+ once health is under 80%. Check Apple’s repair page for today’s price.

Can I downgrade my iPhone 14 to fix lag?

No. Apple stops signing older iOS versions, so you can only install the current release or later ones.

Does the iPhone 14 have a SIM card slot?

US models are eSIM-only. Models sold in most other countries, including the UK, have a nano-SIM tray as well as eSIM.
