Tecno, Infinix & itel: How to Check a Used Phone Before Buying
In this article
  1. Step 1: Get the IMEI from the phone, not the box
  2. Step 2: Confirm the model is genuine
  3. Step 3: Check the blacklist status
  4. Step 4: Make sure no Google account is on the phone (FRP)
  5. Step 5: Avoid financed and “pay-as-you-go” locked phones
  6. Step 6: Check the warranty and hardware
  7. Quick buying checklist

Tecno, Infinix and itel phones are everywhere — in Lagos and Accra phone markets, in Nairobi shops, in South Asia and in online marketplaces worldwide. All three brands belong to the same parent company, Transsion, and are serviced by its official after-sales network, Carlcare. Their popularity also makes them a big part of the used market, along with the usual problems: stolen phones, Google-locked phones, clones and phones that are still being paid off.

This checklist covers what to check on any used Tecno (Spark, Camon, Pova, Phantom), Infinix (Hot, Note, Zero, Smart, GT) or itel phone — before any money changes hands.

Step 1: Get the IMEI from the phone, not the box

Dial *#06# in the phone app. You’ll see one or two 15-digit IMEI numbers — almost all Tecno, Infinix and itel smartphones are dual-SIM, so expect two. Then compare with:

  • Settings › About phone › Status (sometimes Status information › IMEI, depending on HiOS, XOS or itel OS version).
  • The box label, if the seller has one.
  • On older itel feature phones and some budget models, the sticker under the battery.

All the numbers must match. A box with a different IMEI is a classic sign of a swapped or stolen phone. Check that the IMEI is valid — paste it into the terminal below. Type imei followed by the number (for example imei 356938035643809) and press Enter; type tac and the number to see what the first eight digits say about the model:

Step 2: Confirm the model is genuine

Popular models get copied, and some sellers pass off older or lower-spec phones as newer ones. Check three things:

  1. Settings › About phone — model name, model number (a short letter-and-number code), Android version, RAM and storage.
  2. The model on the box and the back of the phone.
  3. A Manufacturer + Model IMEI check, which shows the brand and model the IMEI was registered for.

If the IMEI check says one model and Settings shows another, the phone may be a clone or have had its software changed. Don’t buy. A quick storage test helps too: open the file manager and check the total space matches what’s advertised.

Step 3: Check the blacklist status

A phone reported lost or stolen can be blocked by mobile networks via its IMEI. Run a GSMA blacklist status check on IMEI1. Results:

  • Clean — no lost or stolen report found.
  • Blacklisted / Lost / Stolen — don’t buy, whatever the explanation.

Not every theft is reported, so a clean result is necessary but not enough. Read what blacklisted IMEI results mean for details, then insert your own SIM and make a call before paying.

Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

Step 4: Make sure no Google account is on the phone (FRP)

Every Android phone, including Tecno, Infinix and itel, has Factory Reset Protection (FRP). If the phone is reset while the seller’s Google account is still on it, setup will demand that exact account — and you’re stuck.

  1. Open Settings › Accounts (or Users & accounts / Passwords & accounts). It should show no Google account, or the seller should remove theirs in front of you.
  2. Ask the seller to factory reset the phone from Settings while you watch: usually Settings › System › Reset options › Erase all data (factory reset).
  3. Go through setup until the Google sign-in screen. It should let you add any account, not “Verify your account”.

Selling your own phone? Our guide to factory resetting a phone properly shows how to remove accounts first.

Step 5: Avoid financed and “pay-as-you-go” locked phones

In several markets, phones like Tecno, Infinix and itel are sold on installment or pay-as-you-go plans. These handsets usually carry a device-management lock: if a payment is missed, a lender’s app or the phone itself locks it until the balance is paid. A phone like this can be resold while the debt is still running — and lock on its new owner weeks later.

Signs of a financed or managed phone:

  • A lender or “device lock” app that can’t be uninstalled or disabled.
  • Settings › Security › Device admin apps (name varies) lists a management app that you can’t turn off.
  • Payment reminders, a countdown or a lock screen asking you to pay.
  • After a reset, setup shows that the device belongs to an organization or installs a company app automatically.
  • A price far below what similar phones sell for.

An MDM status check can help reveal whether the phone is enrolled in device management (the MDM check by IMEI or serial covers more devices). If a phone is financed, only the lender can release it once the balance is paid — no shop or “unlock” service can legitimately do it. The safest choice is to avoid these phones entirely. Our MDM lock guide explains how device management works.

Step 6: Check the warranty and hardware

Warranty

Carlcare is the official service network for Tecno, Infinix and itel. Carlcare offers ways to check a device’s warranty status, such as its official app or website, and service centers can look it up from the IMEI. A valid warranty in your country is a good sign the phone was sold through official channels; no record or a warranty from another region doesn’t always mean a problem, but ask the seller for the receipt.

Hardware test (5 minutes)

  • Screen: display a white image and look for dead pixels, yellow patches or burn-in.
  • Charging: plug in and confirm it charges; wiggle the cable gently.
  • Battery: watch the percentage for a few minutes of use. A fast drop or swelling (lifted screen or back) is a no.
  • Cameras, speakers, microphone: record a short video and play it back.
  • Calls and data: make a call with your SIM in each slot and load a web page.
  • Fingerprint and face unlock after you set them up yourself.

Quick buying checklist

  1. *#06# IMEI matches Settings and box.
  2. IMEI is valid and the model matches a Manufacturer + Model check.
  3. Blacklist status is Clean.
  4. No Google account; phone reset in front of you and sets up with your account.
  5. No lender, finance or management app; MDM check is OFF.
  6. Hardware works with your own SIM.
