iPhone Duo pre-order, in short: iPhone Duo pre-orders open on Friday 16 October 2026 at 5 a.m. PT / 8 a.m. ET, with Apple’s “Get Ready” pre-order setup available from 12 to 15 October so you can choose your color, storage, carrier, AppleCare+ and payment in advance. Prices start at $1,999 for 256GB and go up to $3,199 for 2TB in the US. The phone is released on Friday 23 October in the US and many other countries, with a second wave in 28 more countries on 30 October. It ships with iOS 27.1.
This guide covers the full timeline, every price, colors and accessories, tips to get a launch-day delivery — and, just as important, how to prepare the iPhone you have now so you can sell it or trade it in without losing data or leaving Activation Lock switched on. At the end you will find what to check if you would rather buy a Duo used later. Details are correct as of 9 October 2026.
iPhone Duo pre-order date and time
Apple announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at its 9 September 2026 event. Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro, which went on pre-order three days after the event, the Duo has a longer wait. Here is the full schedule, based on Apple’s announcement as reported by MacRumors and AppleInsider:
| Date (2026) | What happens |
|---|---|
| 9 September | iPhone Duo announced |
| 7 October | Developers can submit Duo-ready apps to the App Store (GSMArena) |
| 12–15 October | “Get Ready” pre-order setup: pick color, storage, carrier, AppleCare+ and payment in advance |
| Friday 16 October, 5 a.m. PT / 8 a.m. ET | Pre-orders open |
| Friday 23 October | Release in the US, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and many more countries; ships with iOS 27.1 |
| Friday 30 October | Second wave: release in 28 more countries |
Outside the US, convert 5 a.m. Pacific Time to your local time — for example, 8 a.m. ET is 1 p.m. in London (BST) on 16 October. If you live in a second-wave country, check Apple’s local store for your own pre-order date.
iPhone Duo price: every storage option
| Storage | US price |
|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 |
| 512GB | $2,199 |
| 1TB | $2,599 |
| 2TB | $3,199 |
Prices are US prices from MacRumors’ launch coverage and exclude tax. The jump from 1TB to 2TB is $600, so think hard about whether you really need 2TB; most people who shoot a lot of video are better served by 1TB plus iCloud. Phone prices across the industry have been climbing this autumn because of memory costs — see our 2026 phone price increase guide for context.

iPhone Duo accessories
| Accessory | Price |
|---|---|
| Duo Case | $79 |

Because the Pencil support is not live at launch, there is no rush to buy one on pre-order day.
How to pre-order the iPhone Duo: tips for launch-day delivery
- Use Get Ready (12–15 October). Saving your choices in advance means checkout on 16 October is a few taps instead of several screens.
- Sign in to your Apple Account on the device you’ll order from and confirm your shipping address and payment method.
- Decide carrier vs unlocked. A carrier-activated phone may come with deals but can be tied to that carrier. Read carrier-locked vs unlocked before you choose.
- Check eSIM support. The Duo is eSIM-only, so make sure your carrier supports eSIM on your plan.
- Be ready a few minutes before 5 a.m. PT / 8 a.m. ET on 16 October, and refresh only once the store opens.
- Watch the delivery estimate. If 23 October slips, it is often worth trying another color or storage tier rather than waiting weeks.
Should you pre-order the iPhone Duo or wait?
Pre-ordering makes sense if you want a foldable iPhone on day one and the price is already in your budget. There are also good reasons to wait a few weeks:
- It is a first-generation product. Apple’s first foldable has no track record yet. The iPhone 18 Pro launch showed how early bugs can appear — read our iPhone 18 Pro problems roundup for what happened there.
- Software is still settling. The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, and Apple has been testing iOS 27.2 in beta alongside it. Early updates often fix launch issues.
- Apps are still adapting. Developers could only start submitting Duo-ready apps on 7 October, so some apps may not use the larger inner screen well at launch.
- The cost gap is large. The 256GB Duo costs $700 more than the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max ($1,299), which uses the same A20 Pro chip family. If you mainly want a big screen and long battery life, the Pro Max is the cheaper route.
If you do pre-order, Apple’s 14-day return window gives you time to decide whether a foldable suits you — keep the box and accessories until you are sure.
How to prepare your old iPhone to sell or trade in
Most Duo buyers will be paying for it partly with the phone they own now. Do these steps in order once your Duo is set up and your data has moved across — not before.
1. Back up your iPhone
Make a fresh iCloud backup (Settings › [your name] › iCloud › iCloud Backup › Back Up Now) or back up to a Mac or PC. You can also use Quick Start to move data directly to the Duo. Our backup before selling guide explains each method.
2. Unpair your Apple Watch
If you have an Apple Watch, unpair it from the old iPhone in the Watch app. This creates a backup of the watch and removes its Activation Lock link to the old phone. You then pair it with the Duo.
3. Sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My
Go to Settings › [your name] › Sign Out and enter your password. Signing out turns off Find My and Activation Lock. This is the single most important step: a phone still linked to your account cannot be used by the next owner, and trade-in programs will reject it. Read Activation Lock explained to understand why.
4. Remove your eSIM
If your line is moving to the Duo, transfer it during setup. When asked, choose to erase the eSIM on the old phone too. Never hand over a phone with your active eSIM on it.
5. Erase all content and settings
Go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Erase All Content and Settings. When it finishes, the phone should show the “Hello” setup screen.
6. Check what your old iPhone is worth
Compare Apple’s trade-in offer, your carrier’s offer and a private sale. Carrier credits are usually spread over many months and tied to a plan, so compare the total, not the headline. Our iPhone trade-in value 2026 guide has current figures by model.
7. Show buyers a clean report
If you are selling privately, running a free All-in-one Basic Info check on your own IMEI and sharing the result shows buyers that Find My is off and the model is what you say it is. A clean GSMA blacklist check helps too. Listings with proof sell faster.
Buying an iPhone Duo used later? Check these first
A $1,999-and-up foldable will become a target for resellers and thieves once it has been out for a few months. If you plan to wait and buy a used or “like new” Duo, check it properly:
- Find My and basic info: the free All-in-one check confirms the model and that Find My is off.
- Model, color and storage: a Model + Color + Storage + FMI check confirms whether it really is a 1TB or 2TB unit in Star White or Night Sky, as advertised.
- Warranty and repairs: a full Apple GSX report shows warranty status, purchase date and any replacement or repair history — important on a foldable, where display repairs are likely to be expensive.
- Blacklist: a GSMA blacklist check reveals lost or stolen reports.
- Inspect the fold: open and close it slowly, look at the inner screen against a white background, and test both displays for touch response.
Follow the rest of our used iPhone buying checklist before paying.
