Google sells Pixels unlocked on the Google Store, but carriers sell them too — and those carrier Pixels are often locked. On the used market the two look identical, so a “Pixel 8 Pro, unlocked” listing can turn out to be a Verizon or T-Mobile phone that rejects your SIM.
The good news: Pixels give away their lock status in a few places if you know where to look. This guide covers the on-phone checks, a developer setting that tells you more than most people realize, and the IMEI reports that confirm model, warranty and blacklist status.
Step 1: Find the model, IMEI and serial number
On any Pixel, open Settings › About phone. You’ll see:
- Device name and Model — tap Model to see the exact model and hardware details, including the serial number on many versions.
- IMEI — two entries on Pixels with eSIM or dual-SIM support.
- Android version and Build number.
Prefer the dialer? Dial *#06# to show the IMEI instantly. Make sure the number matches Settings and the SIM tray or box.
The model shown in Settings is the marketing name (for example “Pixel 8a”). Pixels also have a regulatory model number that differs between regions; on many models you can see it under Settings › About phone › Regulatory labels. A Google Pixel Info report confirms the exact model, color, storage and country by IMEI, so you know the phone matches the listing.
Step 2: The OEM unlocking clue (Developer options)
This is the trick experienced Pixel buyers use. Android has an OEM unlocking setting that controls whether the bootloader can be unlocked. On Pixels, carriers can disable it — so its state tells you a lot about the phone’s carrier status.
Turn on Developer options
- Go to Settings › About phone.
- Tap Build number seven times. Enter the PIN if asked. You’ll see “You are now a developer”.
- Go to Settings › System › Developer options.
Read the OEM unlocking toggle
| What you see | Usually means |
|---|---|
| Toggle can be switched on | Not carrier-locked (Google Store or already-unlocked carrier phone). |
| Greyed out with a message about connecting to the internet | The phone hasn’t checked in yet. Connect to Wi-Fi and wait, then look again. |
| Greyed out while online | Carrier-locked — or a carrier model where the carrier keeps it disabled. |
| “Bootloader is already unlocked” | Someone has unlocked the bootloader. Ask why. |
Step 3: Test with another carrier’s SIM
Insert a SIM (or add an eSIM) from a different carrier and restart. A locked Pixel shows a “SIM not supported” or network lock message and won’t connect. If you get signal and can make a call, the SIM lock is off.
Before you buy, also run a GSMA blacklist check and the USA blacklist / barred check for US Pixels. A phone reported lost, stolen or unpaid can be blocked even if it’s unlocked.
Step 4 (optional): Check with ADB from a computer
If you have Android’s platform tools installed and USB debugging enabled (Developer options › USB debugging), you can read some details from a computer. These commands only read information — they don’t change anything:
adb devices
adb shell getprop ro.product.model
adb shell getprop ro.product.device
adb shell getprop ro.build.fingerprint
adb shell getprop gsm.operator.alphaThe model and device codename confirm which Pixel it is, the build fingerprint shows the exact software build, and the operator line shows the network the current SIM is registered on. More commands in our ADB commands guide.
Step 5: Check the warranty
Pixel warranty length and terms depend on where and from whom the phone was bought (Google Store or a carrier/retailer). Ways to check:
- On Google’s site: if the phone was bought from the Google Store, the original buyer can see it in their Google Store account. Warranty terms are on the official Pixel Phone Help center.
- By IMEI: the Pixel info check shows warranty and purchase details without needing the seller’s account.
Warranty service may depend on the country of purchase, so a US Pixel used in the UK or Nigeria may not be serviced locally.
What to do if your Pixel is carrier-locked
Start with the official route. The carrier that sold the phone can unlock it if it meets their requirements — generally paid off, active for a minimum period, not reported lost or stolen, and on an account in good standing. Policies change, so confirm on the carrier’s official page — for example T-Mobile’s Device Unlock process or the Verizon unlock policy.
If the Pixel is yours, fully paid off and clean, but you can’t use the carrier route (for example, you bought it second-hand abroad), the Google Pixel carrier unlock service supports Pixel 6 to 10 series. Run the blacklist checks first: financed, unpaid, blacklisted, lost or stolen phones are not eligible and should not be unlocked.
Pixel buying checklist
- IMEI from
*#06#matches Settings and the SIM tray. - Model in Settings and the IMEI report match the listing.
- OEM unlocking state makes sense for where the phone came from.
- A SIM from your carrier connects and makes a call.
- No Google account left on the phone, and a reset completes without a previous-account prompt.
- Clean GSMA and US blacklist results.
Run your Pixel check
Quick verdict: OEM unlocking available + clean blacklist = safe, unlocked Pixel. Greyed out + carrier model = check the SIM lock before paying. Any lost, stolen or unpaid result = walk away. See also our Google Pixel check page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my Google Pixel is carrier locked?
Insert a SIM from another carrier. If it is rejected, the Pixel is locked. You can also check Developer options: if OEM unlocking is greyed out while online, the phone is carrier-locked or a carrier model.
Why is OEM unlocking greyed out on my Pixel?
Usually because the phone is carrier-locked, it is a carrier model that keeps the setting disabled, or it has not connected to the internet yet. Connect to Wi-Fi, wait, and check again.
Does Verizon unlock the bootloader on Pixel phones?
Verizon Pixels generally keep OEM unlocking disabled, even when the SIM lock has been removed. That affects bootloader unlocking, not which SIM cards the phone accepts.
How do I check Pixel warranty?
The original buyer can see Google Store purchases in their account. For a used phone, a Pixel info IMEI report shows warranty and purchase details.
Can I unlock a financed Pixel?
Carriers require the phone to be paid off and not reported lost or stolen. Run it through iSerial’s checks first. Carrier and manufacturer records can be wrong, and our report shows the exact status and why. Based on that result, our team can advise which service applies to your device.
