Press a fingertip into the corner of the inner screen and it gives, more than the middle of the panel does. That video went round in September and kicked off most of the Galaxy Z Fold8 problems threads you’ll find now. Since then repairers have shown the hinge choking on fine dust, and the first report of an inner display cracking without a drop has appeared.

Some of this is normal for a folding phone. Some of it needs Samsung. On a phone that starts around $1,900, it’s worth knowing which is which.

Corners that dip when you press them

In early September, owners in South Korea, on Reddit and in Samsung’s EU community reported the inner display’s corners sinking noticeably further than the rest of the panel. SamMobile first covered it on 7 September 2026. Android Authority’s reviewer said his loan unit had slight give in one corner, though less than in the viral clip.

A day later SamMobile reported Samsung’s reply to a Korean customer: the dip is intentional and “does not affect product performance.” Samsung says the corners use a cushioning structure for durability, and the extra clearance lets the display move a little under light pressure. That statement covers the Fold8 and the Fold8 Ultra.

So don’t keep pressing the corners to test them. Repeated pressure is bad for any flexible OLED. Check that the factory screen protector is lying flat, because a lifting edge makes the corners feel softer and lets dust under. If the dip gets worse, or you see bubbles, lines or a bulge, take it to an authorised Samsung service centre for a physical inspection while the warranty is running.

Grit in the hinge, and what IP48 doesn’t cover

The Fold8 is rated IP48. The 8 is strong water resistance. The 4 only covers solid objects about 1mm and up. Fine dust, pocket lint and beach sand are smaller than that, which is a problem for a hinge full of moving surfaces.

iFixit demonstrated it in its August 2026 teardown, reported by TechSpot. It coated a Fold8 in UV-reactive powder and opened and closed it repeatedly. The hinge started crunching and grinding, and the phone stopped opening normally. The sealed parts (batteries, boards, cameras) stayed clean, but the exposed hinge was packed with powder. iFixit gave the Fold8 a provisional repairability score of 4 out of 10.

Signs your hinge has picked something up:

  • A gritty or crunchy feel as you open it.
  • Uneven resistance, or it won’t hold angles it used to.
  • Small bumps under the inner display near the fold.

Keep it out of pockets with sand, crumbs or keys, and if you work outdoors use a closed case with a hinge cover. Don’t blow compressed air or poke tools into the hinge; you’ll push debris further in. The same goes for rinsing. Wipe the outside with a dry microfibre cloth and leave it there. If you feel grinding, stop forcing it, close it fully and get Samsung to look at it rather than trying to “work it in”.

Dim screens on hot days

Owners in hot climates say the screens, the cover display especially, go noticeably dimmer during long spells outdoors. That’s the phone protecting itself from heat, not a fault. Samsung’s peak figure of up to 3,000 nits on the inner screen applies to brief bursts of HDR content.

Get into shade and give it a few minutes. Avoid charging or long camera sessions in direct sun, and turn on Adaptive brightness in Settings › Display. If it stays dim indoors at normal temperature, restart and check Settings › Software update.

Why a Fold8 repair costs so much

Samsung hasn’t published a price list for every market, so what you pay depends on the country and the service centre. iFixit’s teardown shows why the numbers are high:

  • Samsung treats the hinge and inner display as one assembly, so damage to either can mean replacing both.
  • One of the two batteries sits behind the cover display, which is strongly glued.
  • iFixit couldn’t find a genuine Fold8 cover display sold directly to US repairers.

With the Fold8 at around $1,900 and the Fold8 Ultra about $200 more, price up Samsung Care+ or accidental-damage insurance before you need it. Our Samsung IMEI warranty check explains how to confirm your coverage dates.

If you’re weighing it against Apple’s iPhone Duo, which went on sale on 23 October from $1,999 in the US, there’s no long-term durability data on the Duo yet. Be wary of anyone who says one is clearly tougher. What you can compare today is each phone’s official water and dust rating, the cost of Samsung Care+ against AppleCare+ where you live, and price, where the Fold8 is the cheaper of the two at launch and US deals have widened the gap. The hardware differences are in our Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8 specs guide.

Checking a used or open-box Fold8

Second-hand and open-box listings are turning up, and some will be early returns.

  1. Dial *#06# and match the IMEI against the box and Settings › About phone.
  2. Run a Samsung Info report to confirm the exact model (Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra), the country it was sold in and the warranty.
  3. Run a GSMA blacklist check so you know it hasn’t been reported lost or stolen.
  4. Open and close it slowly ten times, feeling for grit. Put up a white background and look for bumps, lines and protector edges lifting.
  5. Ask whether the inner display or hinge has been replaced, and ask for the Samsung service receipt. Our guide to checking original screen parts helps here.

If the inner screen cracks without a drop

On 16 October 2026, Sammy Fans reported what it called the first Fold8 screen-crack case. The inner display split along the crease, and the owner said there had been no drop, impact or water. The service centre reportedly refused a free repair, calling it physical damage that voids the limited warranty. Samsung Care+ would have covered it.

One case isn’t a trend, but it shows how foldable warranty decisions can go. If it happens to you:

  1. Photograph the screen, hinge and frame straight away. Pictures showing no dents or scuffs help your claim.
  2. Back up with Samsung Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud.
  3. Contact Samsung support and ask for the technician’s assessment in writing. If they refuse, ask for it to be escalated.
  4. Check whether you or the retailer added Samsung Care+, and whether consumer law in your country gives you extra rights for faults that show up early.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Galaxy Z Fold8 screen corner sinking a defect?

Samsung told a Korean customer the dip is intentional: the corners use a cushioning structure with extra clearance, and it doesn’t affect performance. If it gets worse or you see damage, have a service centre inspect it.

Is the Galaxy Z Fold8 dustproof?

No. IP48 covers water and solid objects about 1mm and larger, not fine dust or sand. iFixit’s dust test left the hinge grinding.

Does Samsung warranty cover a cracked Fold8 inner screen?

Samsung often treats cracks as physical damage, which the limited warranty excludes. Samsung Care+ or insurance can cover it, and you can escalate if there was no impact.

Why is Z Fold8 repair so expensive?

Samsung treats the hinge and inner display as one assembly, so damage to either can mean replacing both. iFixit gave it a provisional repairability score of 4 out of 10.

How much does the Galaxy Z Fold8 cost?

It starts at about $1,900 in the US. The Fold8 Ultra costs about $200 more.
