Galaxy Z Flip8 Problems: Battery Life, Cover Screen Apps, Fixes
Galaxy Z Flip8 problems explained: short battery life, slow 25W charging, heat, cover screen app limits and crease worries — plus fixes that actually help.

It’s 7pm, the Flip8 is at 18%, and the charger you plugged in an hour ago has only got it to about two-thirds. Those two complaints, battery and charging speed, top the list of Galaxy Z Flip8 problems since the phone went on sale on 7 August 2026. After them come a warm top half when you game and a cover screen that still won’t run most apps without some setup.
Flip7 owners will recognise all of it. Mostly these aren’t defects. They come with making a foldable this small, and a few settings make a real difference.
The specs behind the complaints
According to Tech Advisor, the Flip8 costs $1,199.99 in the US and £1,149 in the UK, which is $100/£100 more than the Flip7. It runs One UI 9 on Android 17. Reviews and Samsung’s regional listings point to two chips: the Exynos 2600 in Europe, India and other international markets, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in North America (Android Authority, Tech Advisor and Beebom). Your model code tells you which one you have; our Samsung model number and CSC explainer shows how to read it.
| Spec | Z Flip8 | What you notice |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | 4,300mAh, now silicon-carbon | About a day, not much more |
| Wired charging | 25W (the Fold8 models get 45W) | Full charges take a while |
| Wireless charging | 15W, no built-in Qi2 magnets | Magnetic chargers need a magnetic case |
| Water and dust | IP48 | Fine sand can still reach the hinge |
The full spec sheet is in our Fold8 and Flip8 specs and security breakdown.
Battery that just about lasts a day
Beebom measured around six hours of screen-on time and said battery life “needs optimisation”. That is roughly what the Flip7 managed, despite the new cell. People who use the camera a lot, or game, say they need a top-up by evening.
Samsung spent the denser battery chemistry on making the phone slimmer, not on more capacity. Two 120Hz screens, 5G and an always-connected cover screen all pull from the same 4,300mAh. Android Authority also questioned how efficient the Snapdragon chip would be in a chassis this small.
New Galaxy phones spend their first days optimising apps and learning your habits, so give it a week. Then:
- Set the Performance profile to Light under Settings › Device care › Performance profile (on some One UI builds it’s under Settings › Battery). Everyday use feels much the same, with less heat and drain.
- Turn off Always On Display in Settings › Lock screen and AOD, or set it to show only when you tap.
- Shorten the timeouts in Settings › Display › Screen timeout, and the cover screen ones under Settings › Cover screen.
- Put rarely used apps to sleep in Settings › Battery › Background usage limits.
- Look for one greedy app in Settings › Battery and update or uninstall it.
- Turn on Battery protection (Settings › Battery › Battery protection) to slow long-term wear.
Charging is slow. Is it broken?
Probably not. The Flip8 tops out at 25W wired, and Beebom measured about 1 hour 40 minutes from 5% to 100%. If yours is much slower than that, use a USB-C Power Delivery charger with PPS (Samsung’s own 25W adapter is the benchmark), and check that Fast charging is on under Settings › Battery › More battery settings. One UI slows charging when the battery is warm, so take the case off if it feels hot. Pocket lint in the USB-C port is common; clear it gently with a wooden toothpick.

Getting apps onto the 4.1-inch cover screen
The cover screen now opens to a Now Brief hub, with an app drawer when you swipe up. But Tech Advisor and Beebom both say most third-party apps still need workarounds, and Android Central found that the aspect ratio you pick doesn’t stick when you switch apps.
The quick route is Samsung’s own list: Settings › Advanced features › Labs › Apps allowed on cover screen. It’s short.
For anything else, use Good Lock:
- Install Good Lock from the Galaxy Store (it isn’t offered in every country).
- Open it and add the MultiStar module.
- Tap I ♡ Galaxy Foldable › Launcher widget and switch it on.
- Choose your apps, then add the launcher widget to the cover screen.
Some apps will look stretched or ask you to open the phone. That’s the app, not a fault.
Warm top half when gaming
Reviewers say the top half warms up during heavy gaming and long camera sessions. On the Exynos model, Beebom found popular games capped at 60fps, dipping to 45–50fps in busy scenes.
Don’t game on the charger. During a game, swipe up from the navigation bar to open Game Booster and lower the frame rate or pick a battery-saving priority. Take a thick case off for long sessions. If the phone gets warm while it’s just sitting there, restart it; that’s usually a stuck background process.
The crease, the hinge and dust
Every folding screen has a crease. Beebom said the Flip8’s, nearly invisible at first, was noticeable again after a week, and Android Central noted that the hinge sticks out at both ends of the screen. Both are normal.
These are not: bubbles under the protector, film lifting at the edge, a line of dead pixels, or a hinge that grinds. Leave the factory screen protector on, because it’s part of the display. IP48 only keeps out particles bigger than 1mm, so fine sand and dust can get in; keep it off the beach and out of gritty pockets. If the inner screen or hinge fails, contact Samsung. It may be covered under warranty unless there’s physical or liquid damage.
Crashes, restarts and Wi-Fi dropping out
Early One UI 9 builds on any new Galaxy can bring app crashes, random restarts, or Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that keep disconnecting. Before you suspect the hardware:
- Install updates from Settings › Software update › Download and install, then update apps in the Galaxy Store and Play Store.
- Restart weekly, or let Settings › Device care › Auto optimisation restart it overnight.
- Open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, and tap Safe mode. If the problem goes away, a downloaded app is to blame; remove recent installs one at a time.
- For Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or mobile data: Settings › General management › Reset › Reset network settings.
- Back up with Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch and factory reset if nothing else works.
Restarts that continue after a reset, with no apps installed, point to hardware. Samsung should look at it under warranty.
Checking a used Z Flip8
Foldables cost a lot to repair, and Tech Advisor cited an (unconfirmed) leaker who says the Flip8 may be the last Galaxy Z Flip. Condition matters on a used one.
- Open and close it slowly 20 times and listen for grinding.
- Put a white background on the inner screen and look for lines or dead pixels.
- Run a Samsung Info report for model, region and warranty, and a carrier and SIM-lock check, before money changes hands.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Galaxy Z Flip8 battery drain so fast?
A 4,300mAh battery runs two 120Hz screens. The Light performance profile, Always On Display off and shorter timeouts help most.
How fast does the Z Flip8 charge?
It supports 25W wired and 15W wireless. Beebom measured about 1 hour 40 minutes from 5% to 100%.
Which chip does the Galaxy Z Flip8 use?
Reviews report the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in North America and the Exynos 2600 in Europe and other international markets.
How do I run any app on the Z Flip8 cover screen?
Turn apps on in Settings › Advanced features › Labs, or install Good Lock with the MultiStar module and enable the Launcher widget.
Is the Galaxy Z Flip8 dust-proof?
No. IP48 only protects against particles larger than 1mm, so fine sand and dust can still reach the hinge.
