You reset a second-hand iPhone, tap through the welcome screens, and then it stops: “iPhone Locked to Owner”, followed by a request for an Apple Account email and password you’ve never seen. That screen is Activation Lock, and it is the single most effective anti-theft feature Apple has ever shipped.

For owners it’s a lifesaver. For buyers it’s a trap if you don’t check first. This guide explains how Activation Lock works, how to check whether a device has it, and the only two legitimate ways to remove it.

What Activation Lock actually is

Activation Lock is not a separate setting. It switches on automatically the moment the owner turns on Find My on an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or a Mac with Apple silicon or the T2 security chip. From then on, Apple’s activation servers link that device’s hardware identifiers (IMEI and serial number) to the owner’s Apple Account.

Because the link lives on Apple’s servers, not on the device, it survives everything a thief or reseller might try:

  • Erasing the device — after Erase All Content and Settings or a restore in Finder/iTunes, setup still asks for the original Apple Account.
  • Installing a new iOS version — every activation checks with Apple again.
  • Swapping the SIM or changing networks — the lock is tied to the hardware, not the SIM.

Without the owner’s Apple Account password (or the device passcode on recent iOS versions, where Apple allows it), the device cannot be set up. It can’t make calls, install apps or be used as a normal phone.

Activation Lock is only one of several locks a used device can carry. Carrier SIM-lock, blacklisting and MDM are completely different systems, so a phone can be “unlocked” for networks and still be iCloud-locked.

How to check if a device has Activation Lock

Apple retired its public Activation Lock status page years ago, so you need to check on the device itself or with a Find My status report.

On an iPhone or iPad that turns on

  1. Open Settings and tap the name at the top. If a name and Apple Account appear, someone is signed in.
  2. Tap Find My › Find My iPhone (or Find My iPad). If it says On, Activation Lock is active.
  3. Ask the seller to turn it off and sign out while you watch. They’ll need their Apple Account password.

On a device that’s already been erased

Turn it on and go through setup until you connect to Wi-Fi. If you see iPhone Locked to Owner (older versions say “Activation Lock”), it’s still linked to someone else’s account. A clean device goes straight to the normal setup options.

On a Mac

Hold the Option key and choose Apple menu › System Information. Under Hardware, look for Activation Lock Status. “Enabled” means Find My is on for an Apple Account. For a remote check, use the MacBook Find My (FMI) check or the MacBook iCloud clean/lost check.

Remotely, before you meet the seller

Ask for the IMEI or serial number and run a Model + Find My status check. If you want the full picture, the Model + Color + Storage + FMI report also confirms the phone matches the listing. Your first All-in-one check is free:

The fastest and only guaranteed route is the person whose Apple Account is linked to the device. There are two ways they can do it.

Option 1: With the device in hand

  1. Go to Settings › [their name] › Find My › Find My iPhone and turn it off with their Apple Account password.
  2. Go back to Settings › [their name], scroll down and tap Sign Out.
  3. Erase the phone in Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Erase All Content and Settings.

If Stolen Device Protection is on and the phone is away from a familiar location, iOS may require Face ID and a one-hour security delay before the Apple Account password can be used. That’s normal — wait it out.

Option 2: Remotely, from iCloud.com

If the seller has already shipped the phone or lives elsewhere, they can remove it without touching it:

  1. Sign in at icloud.com/find with the Apple Account linked to the device.
  2. Open All Devices and select the device.
  3. Choose Erase This Device if it hasn’t been erased, then Remove This Device.

Once removed, restart the device and setup will continue normally. If it still shows the lock, connect to Wi-Fi again and wait a few minutes — Apple’s servers can take a moment to update.

Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.

If you are the genuine owner but can’t remember your Apple Account details, or you bought a new device from an authorized retailer and it’s locked to someone else, Apple can help through an Activation Lock support request. Apple explains the process on its Activation Lock support page.

What Apple generally asks for:

  • Original proof of purchase showing the device’s serial number or IMEI, the seller and the date. A handwritten note or marketplace screenshot won’t do.
  • The device must not be in Lost Mode and must not be managed by an organization.
  • Your contact details so Apple can verify the request.

Apple reviews every request and can decline it. If you bought a used phone privately, you usually won’t have a receipt Apple will accept — which is exactly why checking before paying matters. Your best option then is to contact the seller and ask them to remove the device from iCloud.com.

Why “iCloud bypass” and “unlock” services are a bad idea

Search for Activation Lock and you’ll find sellers offering “iCloud removal” or “bypass” for a fee. Avoid them, for three reasons:

  • A bypass doesn’t remove the lock. Tools that skip setup leave the device linked to the owner’s account. Calls, iCloud, updates and the App Store often don’t work, and the lock returns after an update or reset.
  • Many “official removal” offers are scams. Nobody outside Apple can delete an Activation Lock record, whatever they claim.
  • Locked phones are often stolen. Paying to unlock one can mean handling stolen property, and the original owner can still track or erase it.

Activation Lock checklist for buyers and sellers

Buying:

  • Dial *#06# to get the real IMEI, then run a Find My status check before you meet.
  • In person, confirm Settings › [name] shows no Apple Account, or watch the seller sign out.
  • Erase the phone together and make sure setup reaches the “Quick Start” or language screens without asking for an Apple Account.
  • Read our full stolen phone check guide and run a free iCloud status check.

Selling:

Activation Lock protects owners extremely well. Treat it as a hard stop when buying, and if you’re the owner, keep Find My on until the day you hand the device over. If a phone you own has been taken, see how to report a stolen phone and block its IMEI.

Frequently asked questions

Can Activation Lock be removed without the previous owner?

Only by Apple, and only if you can provide original proof of purchase for that device. Otherwise the previous owner must remove it from their Apple Account at icloud.com/find.

Does a factory reset remove Activation Lock?

No. Activation Lock is stored on Apple’s servers. After a reset or restore, setup still asks for the Apple Account that was signed in.

How can I check Activation Lock without the phone?

Ask the seller for the IMEI or serial number and run a Find My (FMI) status check. FMI ON means Activation Lock is active.

Is iCloud bypass legal?

Bypass tools don’t remove the lock — they only hide the setup screen, and the device stays linked to the owner. Using them on a device you don’t own can be illegal, and many sellers are scams.

Does Activation Lock work on Macs?

Yes, on Macs with Apple silicon or the T2 security chip when Find My Mac is on. Check it in System Information › Hardware › Activation Lock Status.
