Mac serial number lookup — check any MacBook by serial
Enter a Mac serial number to look up the exact model, year and configuration — your first check is free (All-in-one Basic Info). Full Mac reports add Find My Mac (Activation Lock), iCloud clean/lost and MDM. Used MacBooks are often sold with Find My still ON or enrolled in a company’s remote management — the serial tells you before you pay.

Where to find the serial number on a Mac
- Apple menu › About This Mac — the serial is listed under the model name (on newer macOS, click “More Info”).
- System Settings › General › About on macOS Ventura and later.
- Underside of a MacBook — tiny print near the regulatory text (“Serial” or “S/N”).
- Original box — barcode label; also on the purchase receipt.
- A Mac that will not boot: hold the power button for Recovery, or read it from the case.
What a Mac serial lookup shows
- Model and year — e.g. MacBook Air (M2, 2022) or MacBook Pro 14" (M3 Pro, 2023): spot a cheaper model sold as a better one.
- Colour, chip, memory and storage where available.
- Find My Mac / Activation Lock — must be OFF, or the Mac stays locked to the previous owner’s Apple ID after erasing.
- iCloud clean / lost — “lost” means the owner marked it lost: do not buy.
- MDM / DEP enrolment — a company or school can lock or wipe it remotely.
- Warranty, AppleCare and purchase date.
MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini — all supported
Every Mac has a serial number, from older Intel models with 12-character serials to Apple-silicon Macs with the random 10-character serials Apple has used since 2021. The newer serials no longer encode the model or year, so an official lookup is the only reliable way to identify the Mac.
Buying a used MacBook? Check these three things
- Find My Mac: OFF — ask the seller to sign out of iCloud in System Settings in front of you.
- MDM: not enrolled — cheap “ex-corporate” MacBooks without a receipt are a common trap.
- Model matches the advert — check the year and chip, not just the case.
