US iPhones are everywhere: shipped to Lagos by relatives, sold in London as “US spec”, carried across Europe by students and travelers. They’re often cheaper than local models, and in most ways they are the same phone. But three things decide whether one will actually work on your local network — and one of them has caught out thousands of buyers since 2022.

The short answer: a US iPhone works in Nigeria, the UK and Europe if it’s unlocked and your local carrier supports the way it takes a SIM. Here’s how to check both before you pay.

Issue 1: The carrier lock

Most US iPhones are sold through carriers — AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Cricket and others — and many are locked to that carrier. A locked US iPhone will show “SIM Not Supported” with an MTN, Airtel, EE, Vodafone or Orange SIM. It doesn’t matter how good the phone is; it won’t connect.

How to check:

  • On the phone: Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means unlocked (iOS 14 and later).
  • By IMEI: a carrier + SIM-lock check shows the original carrier and whether the lock is still on. For a quick yes/no, use the SIM-lock status check.

If it’s locked, the fix is an official unlock from the US carrier — possible only if the phone is paid off and not reported lost or stolen. See our guides for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Issue 2: US iPhone 14 and later have no SIM tray

This is the big one. Starting with the iPhone 14 series, iPhone models sold in the US are eSIM-only. There is no physical SIM tray at all — not hidden, not removed, simply not there. That applies to later US models too.

What it means for you:

  • You cannot insert a physical SIM card, even if the phone is unlocked.
  • You need a local carrier that offers eSIM, and you’ll usually need to convert your number to eSIM (often in a store or through the carrier’s app, with ID).
  • Travel eSIMs (data-only plans you buy online) also work on an unlocked US iPhone.

In the UK and most of Europe, major networks offer eSIM. In Nigeria, eSIM is available from some of the major networks, but availability, the sign-up process and which plans are supported vary — check with your network before you buy an eSIM-only phone.

Earlier US models (iPhone 13 and older) have a physical nano-SIM tray plus eSIM, so they behave like international models once unlocked.

Issue 3: Model number and network bands

iPhones are sold in several regional variants, identified by a model number that starts with “A”. Each variant supports a slightly different set of cellular bands.

Find the model number

Go to Settings › General › About. You’ll see a part number like MXXXXLL/A next to Model Number — tap it once to reveal the A-number. The letters before the slash in the part number (for example LL for the US) hint at the region the phone was made for.

Check the bands

US iPhones support the main 4G LTE and 5G bands used in most countries, so in practice they usually get good 4G and 5G coverage abroad. The notable US-only feature is 5G mmWave, which you won’t miss outside the US. To be sure, compare your exact model on Apple’s official iPhone cellular page with the bands your local carrier uses.

An All-in-one basic info report confirms the exact model, color and storage by IMEI, and the iPhone purchase country check shows where the phone was originally sold.

Setting up an eSIM on an unlocked US iPhone

Once you have an eSIM from your local network, setup takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Go to Settings › Cellular (called Mobile Service or Mobile Data on some versions) › Add eSIM.
  3. Choose Use QR Code and scan the code your carrier gives you, or follow the carrier’s app or activation link.
  4. Label the line and pick it as your default for calls and data.

If the iPhone says the eSIM “cannot be added” or “is not supported”, the most likely cause is a carrier lock. Check Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock again before blaming the network.

Other things to check on a US iPhone

  • Find My / Activation Lock: an iPhone still linked to someone’s Apple ID is unusable after a reset, no matter where you are. Read Activation Lock explained.
  • Blacklist status: a US phone reported lost or stolen may be blocked in the US even if it works abroad today. Run a GSMA blacklist check — a blocked phone is still a stolen phone.
  • Warranty: Apple’s warranty terms can limit some services to the country of purchase. Check your coverage on Apple’s support site before relying on it abroad.
  • Dual SIM: eSIM-only iPhones can still hold two active lines — both as eSIM.

Verdict: an unlocked US iPhone 13 or older works almost anywhere. An unlocked US iPhone 14 or newer works anywhere your carrier supports eSIM. A locked US iPhone works nowhere outside its carrier until it’s officially unlocked. More tips on the carrier check page.

Frequently asked questions

Does a US iPhone 15 or 16 have a SIM card slot?

No. iPhone 14 and later models sold in the US are eSIM-only and have no physical SIM tray. You need a carrier that supports eSIM.

Will a US iPhone work with MTN or Airtel in Nigeria?

If it is unlocked, a US iPhone 13 or older works with a physical SIM. A US iPhone 14 or newer needs an eSIM, so confirm your network can provide one before you buy.

Can I use a US iPhone in the UK?

Yes, if it is unlocked. UK networks support the main LTE and 5G bands of US iPhones, and major UK carriers offer eSIM for eSIM-only models.

How do I know if a US iPhone is locked?

Check Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means unlocked. You can also run a carrier + SIM-lock check by IMEI.

Is it safe to buy a US iPhone converted to physical SIM?

It is a modified device. The conversion involves opening the phone and altering the logic board, which can affect reliability and water resistance. Most buyers are better off with an unmodified phone.
