September 2026 brought a new generation of Android flagship chips. Both Qualcomm and MediaTek moved to 2nm, and Chinese brands launched phones within days. Most of these models are China-first, with global versions expected over the coming months.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6
Announced at the Snapdragon Summit on 22–23 September 2026:
- CPU: 8 Oryon cores — 2 prime cores at up to 5.0GHz (a first for a phone chip) and 6 cores at 4.0GHz, with 16MB of cache.
- GPU: the standard version is about 35% faster than last year; the Extreme version adds matrix cores and 18MB of dedicated GPU memory.
- AI: the Extreme’s NPU is up to 35% faster, and it records 8K video at 60fps.
- Connectivity: X105 modem (up to 14.8Gbps), Wi-Fi 8 and Bluetooth 6.0.
Some outlets call the top chip “Gen 6 Pro”; we use Qualcomm’s “Extreme” naming.
MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro and 9600M
Launched on 16 September 2026, also on 2nm. The 9600 Pro uses an all-big-core CPU at up to 4.55GHz with a dual NPU; the 9600M pairs an Arm C1-Ultra core with C1-Premium and C1-Pro cores and a Mali-G1 Ultra GPU.
The phones already using them

Coming next: OnePlus has confirmed the OnePlus 16 for a 12 October China launch, expected with the 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and a huge battery. Huawei continues on its own path with Kirin chips and HarmonyOS — the Pura 90 series (April 2026) runs the Kirin 9030S and HarmonyOS 6.1, while a Mate 90 with new Kirin chips is rumored.
The trend is clear: 7,000–9,000mAh silicon-carbon batteries and 200MP periscope cameras are now standard on Chinese flagships, all running Android 17-based skins.
Security on these phones
Each brand layers its own system on Android 17’s theft protection and Advanced Protection mode. Xiaomi’s Mi Account, OPPO/vivo cloud locks and Huawei ID all work like iCloud: if the old owner is still signed in, a reset phone asks for their password. That makes imported and grey-market units risky.
- Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: run a Xiaomi check for Mi Account lock and sale country.
- Huawei: a Huawei info check confirms the model and warranty.
- All brands: a GSMA blacklist check for lost or stolen reports.
Chinese-market units may lack Google services or your local 5G bands — check the exact model before importing.
