Order an iPhone Duo from Apple’s US website today and the delivery date says January. Order a Galaxy Z Fold8 and it can be at your door this week, often for hundreds less. That’s the practical starting point for iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8, before you even get to screens, battery or the durability reports that came out of launch week.

In one paragraph: the Duo has the bigger battery claims, IP68 dust protection and iOS, but it costs more, weighs more and is hard to get before 2027. The Fold8 is lighter, cheaper in current deals and on shelves now, but its hinge has a known weakness with dust.

Specs come from Apple, Samsung and TechRadar’s side-by-side comparison. For the full story on each phone, see the iPhone Duo specs and security breakdown and the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8 guide.

The real price gap is bigger than $100

On paper it’s $1,999 against $1,899. In practice the Fold8 has been discounted again and again since launch. Gizmodo reported in September that Amazon had it at $1,650, more than $300 under the Duo. Samsung’s own store, carriers and Amazon run Fold8 promotions often, frequently with trade-in credit on top. Apple rarely discounts a brand-new iPhone at launch. Deals change daily, so check before you buy.

Then there’s getting one at all. According to MacRumors, Apple’s US online store showed a 25 January shipping date for every configuration within about 30 minutes of preorders opening on 16 October. Khaleej Times reports some buyers in Dubai face similar waits into January 2027. Walk-in stock at Apple Stores and resellers like Best Buy is the main way to get one sooner.

Durability: a cracking screen vs a crunching hinge

Both phones have a first-months question mark, and they’re different kinds of problem.

The Duo’s inner screen. Within a day of deliveries, Digital Trends and MacRumors reported a small number of early owners with cracks or bright lines on the inner screen near the hinge, from Australia, the US, Canada and China. One Australian owner said the display cracked after fewer than 20 folds with no visible damage beforehand; Apple replaced that unit. Apple hadn’t commented publicly, and some reviewers have folded theirs repeatedly without trouble, so it’s too early to call it a wider defect.

If it does happen, the bill is steep. TechRepublic, citing MacRumors-reported US estimates, puts an out-of-warranty Duo inner-screen repair at about $999, or $99 with AppleCare+. Apple also says the crease-hiding cover layer on the inner display is replaceable, and Tom’s Guide spotted a $19 AppleCare service listing for it.

The Fold8’s hinge. iFixit’s teardown gave it a provisional repairability score of 4 out of 10. In TechSpot’s report on that teardown, fine powder worked into the exposed hinge caused crunching and grinding until it no longer opened normally, even though the sealed internals stayed clean. That fits the rating. IP48 covers solid objects of 1mm and larger and immersion in fresh water, not fine dust or sand. iFixit also found Samsung treats the hinge and inner display as one assembly, so damage to either can mean replacing both.

Samsung charges less to fix it, though. According to TechRepublic, Samsung lists $419 for a Fold8 inner-screen repair and $139 for the outer screen, and Samsung Care+ cuts a cracked-screen repair to $29 under standard coverage.

Living with each one

Both inner screens are 7.6 inches, so the difference is the finish. Apple’s nano-texture display cuts reflections; Samsung’s is glossier. The Duo works with Apple Pencil (USB-C) on both screens, while TechRadar notes the Fold8 doesn’t support the S Pen.

Apple claims more video playback, up to 31 hours on the inner screen against 26 hours for the Fold8, and says the Duo reaches 50% in about 20 minutes on a wired charger. Samsung quotes 63% in 30 minutes for the Fold8. You pay for the Duo’s battery in weight: at 254g it’s 53g heavier, and you feel that in a pocket and holding it open in one hand.

The Duo brings back Touch ID in the side button and is eSIM-only. The Fold8 keeps a physical SIM tray alongside eSIM, which helps if you travel and buy local SIMs.

For a lot of people, software settles it before any of that. The Duo runs iOS and slots into your existing iMessage, iCloud, Apple Watch and AirPods setup, and it can unlock with an Apple Watch as well as Touch ID. The Fold8 ships with One UI 9 on Android 17, which has had several years of foldable-specific multitasking work: three apps side by side, pop-up windows and a taskbar on the inner screen. Switching platforms means moving chats, passwords and paid apps. If you’re happy where you are, stay there.

Don’t forget the Razr Fold

Motorola’s Razr Fold is the other big book-style foldable in the US this year. According to 9to5Google it launched on 21 May at $1,899, with an 8.1-inch inner display, a 6.6-inch cover screen, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and a 6,000mAh battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging. If battery size and charging speed matter most, look at it. It ships with Android 16, one version behind the Fold8’s One UI 9 (Android 17). Our best phones of 2026 list compares more options.

Which one to buy

  • iPhone Duo if you’re staying on iOS, want IP68 dust protection and the longest battery claims, and can wait for stock. Get AppleCare+. The gap between a $99 and a $999 inner-screen repair is too big to ignore while hinge reports are still coming in.
  • Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want a lighter foldable now, at a lower deal price, with a physical SIM slot. Keep it out of sandy pockets and beach bags, and think about Samsung Care+.
  • Razr Fold if you want the biggest inner screen and battery for the same $1,899.
  • Wait a few weeks if you can. That’s long enough to see whether the Duo’s screen reports are isolated or a pattern.

Whichever you choose, buy somewhere with a decent return window.

Checking a used or open-box foldable

Foldables cost a lot to repair, so one hidden fault can wipe out the saving. Before you pay for a second-hand Duo or Fold8:

  1. Open and close it 10–20 times. Listen for grinding, and look at the inner screen near the hinge for lines or dead spots.
  2. For an iPhone Duo, run an Apple model, color, storage and Find My check, plus an Apple GSX report for warranty, replacement history and AppleCare+ status.
  3. For a Fold8, run a Samsung Info report for model, region and warranty, and a blacklist check on the IMEI.
