After years of rumors about an “iPhone Fold”, Apple finally announced its foldable on 9 September 2026 — and called it the iPhone Duo. Preorders open on 16 October and it reaches stores on 23 October 2026, with 28 more countries following on 30 October. Prices start at $1,999.
Two screens, one phone
- Inner display: 7.6 inches, ProMotion, up to 3000 nits, with a nano-texture finish to cut reflections.
- Outer display: 5.4 inches, also ProMotion and 3000 nits — usable as a normal compact phone when closed.
- Hinge and frame: a Grade 5 titanium frame and a hinge with more than 100 parts. The phone is rated IP68.
- Colors and storage: Star White and Night Sky, from 256GB up to 2TB.
Chip, modem and battery
The Duo uses the same A20 Pro (2nm) as the iPhone 18 Pro, and Apple says it sustains about 35% more performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. Connectivity comes from Apple’s C2 modem and N1 wireless chip. Two battery cells give up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen or 44 hours on the outer screen. Cameras are a 48MP main plus a 48MP ultra wide, a front Center Stage camera and a FaceTime camera under the inner display.
Security: Touch ID returns
The biggest surprise: the Duo unlocks with Touch ID built into the side button instead of Face ID — the first new iPhone with a fingerprint sensor in years. It can also unlock with an Apple Watch. Fingerprint data stays in the Secure Enclave and never leaves the phone.
The Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. That makes SIM-swap theft harder, but it also means a stolen Duo can’t simply have its SIM removed — and Activation Lock still ties it to the owner’s Apple ID.
Who is the iPhone Duo for?
It’s aimed at people who want an iPad-sized screen in a pocket — reading, video, split-screen work — and are happy to pay a large premium for the first generation. If you mainly need a camera and battery champion, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is still the better value.
Before you buy one second-hand
- Run an All-in-one check to confirm it’s a genuine iPhone Duo and Find My is OFF.
- Check the GSMA blacklist — early foldables are a theft target.
- Use Model + Color + Storage to make sure storage and color match the listing.
