iPhone 18 Pro Max stuck on SOS on AT&T, in short: Apple has confirmed a problem that makes a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max phones on the AT&T network lose service and show “SOS” in the status bar. Installing iOS 27.0.1 and the latest AT&T carrier settings update is meant to stop it from happening, but if your phone has already lost service, software will not bring it back — Apple says it needs a hardware replacement through Apple Support, an Apple Store or AT&T. The iPhone 18 Pro (the smaller model) is not affected.

This guide explains exactly what Apple and AT&T have said, how to tell whether your phone is affected, how to check your carrier settings version, what the new carrier bundle 72.0.3 on the iOS 27.2 beta is, how the replacement process works, what happens to your return window and warranty, and what to check before you buy a used iPhone 18 Pro Max. Everything below reflects what is known as of 9 October 2026.

What is the iPhone 18 Pro Max SOS issue on AT&T?

On 2 October 2026 Apple told 9to5Mac: “We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls.” It is the first time Apple has publicly acknowledged the problem since the iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on 18 September.

According to GSMArena, affected phones show the same set of symptoms:

  • “SOS” (or “SOS only”) appears in the status bar where the signal bars should be.
  • Normal calls fail, and SMS/iMessage over cellular stops working.
  • Mobile data stops working, so the phone only works on Wi-Fi.
  • The phone cannot reach 911 the normal way — it falls back to emergency-only mode.

MacRumors reported thousands of complaints since launch day, and noted that some owners said their early warranty requests were denied before Apple acknowledged the issue. AT&T said it is “working with Apple to make it right” and texted some customers asking them to install iOS 27.0.1.

Who is affected — and why only the Pro Max?

Apple’s statement is narrow: iPhone 18 Pro Max, AT&T network, “a small number” of users. The reason the Pro Max stands out is hardware. According to MacRumors, the US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone this year that still uses a Qualcomm modem; the iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s own C2 modem and has not been affected.

ModelModem (US)Affected by AT&T SOS issue?
iPhone 18 Pro MaxQualcommYes — a small number of units on AT&T (Apple)
iPhone 18 ProApple C2No reports of this issue
iPhone 18 Pro Max on Verizon / T-MobileQualcommApple’s statement names only AT&T

If you are on another carrier and see SOS, it is probably a different problem — a coverage gap, an eSIM issue or an account problem — and the usual troubleshooting applies. If you are not sure which network your phone is actually locked to, a carrier and SIM-lock check reads it from the IMEI.

2 OctoberGSMArena reports owners saying iOS 27.0.1 alone does not restore service to phones already stuck on SOS.

How to fix iPhone 18 Pro Max SOS on AT&T (prevention)

Apple’s fix is preventive: it is designed to stop working phones from dropping into SOS, not to repair phones that already have. If your Pro Max still has service, do these two things now.

1. Install iOS 27.0.1 (or later)

Go to Settings › General › Software Update. If iOS 27.0.1 is offered, install it over Wi-Fi with the phone on charge. Check the installed version in Settings › General › About › iOS Version. If you have read about other early bugs, our iPhone 18 Pro problems roundup lists everything 27.0.1 fixed.

2. Install the AT&T carrier settings update

According to 9to5Mac, the carrier update arrives automatically within 14 days, but you can trigger it yourself. Go to Settings › General › About and wait a few seconds. If an update is available, a “Carrier Settings Update” prompt appears — tap Update. If nothing appears, you either already have it or it has not reached you yet.

How to check your carrier settings version on iPhone

  1. Open Settings › General › About.
  2. Scroll to the Carrier (or Network Provider) row under your SIM/eSIM.
  3. Tap it once. The text switches from the carrier name to a version number — for example “AT&T 72.0.2”.
  4. Compare that with the latest version you have read about. Restart the phone after any update.

Apple has not published a version number for the 2 October carrier update on iOS 27.0.1, so don’t worry if your number doesn’t match one you saw on social media. What matters is accepting any update the About screen offers.

What is AT&T carrier bundle 72.0.3?

On 8 October, 9to5Mac reported that Apple began rolling out AT&T carrier bundle 72.0.3, up from 72.0.2, to iPhone 18 Pro Max owners running the iOS 27.2 beta. Apple has not said what it changes. It is reasonable to assume it relates to the same issue, but that is not confirmed. If you are not on the beta, there is no need to install a beta just for this — stick with iOS 27.0.1 and the public carrier update, and keep an eye on Software Update.

My iPhone 18 Pro Max is already stuck on SOS — what now?

Apple told 9to5Mac that phones which have already lost service will not be restored by the software update and need a hardware replacement. Before you book anything, spend five minutes ruling out the ordinary causes so the appointment goes smoothly:

  • Confirm you are on iOS 27.0.1 or later and have accepted any carrier update.
  • Toggle Airplane Mode on and off, then restart the phone.
  • Check Settings › Cellular that your AT&T line is turned on and selected for data.
  • Check with AT&T that your account and line are active (a suspended line can also show SOS).
  • Try the phone in an area where your other devices have strong AT&T coverage.

If the phone is still on SOS after that, it fits Apple’s description and you should ask for a replacement.

How the hardware replacement works

Apple says affected phones can be replaced through Apple Support, an Apple Store or AT&T. Practical steps that help:

  1. Back up first. Make an iCloud backup over Wi-Fi or a backup to a Mac or PC. A replacement is a different phone; your data comes back from the backup. See our backup guide.
  2. Have proof of purchase ready — Apple order number, AT&T receipt or account.
  3. Mention Apple’s statement. MacRumors reported some early warranty requests were denied before Apple acknowledged the issue. Referring to Apple’s 2 October confirmation that affected devices require hardware replacement helps the technician identify the case.
  4. Turn off Find My before handing the phone over if the technician asks — they will tell you when. Never give anyone your Apple Account password.
  5. Check the replacement before you leave: new IMEI in Settings › General › About, signal bars on AT&T, a test call and mobile data.

After a replacement your eSIM will need to be reinstalled on the new phone, and your AT&T account must be updated with the new IMEI — the store or AT&T usually does this, but confirm that calls and data work before you go.

Return window and warranty: what are your options?

Apple’s standard 14-day return window for launch-day US buyers ended on 2 October 2026 — the same day Apple confirmed the issue. If you bought later, your window may still be open; check the date on your receipt. Outside the return window, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is covered by Apple’s one-year limited warranty, and Apple’s statement describes the fix for affected phones as a hardware replacement.

Not sure when your coverage started or ends? You can check your phone’s warranty by IMEI or serial number. If you bought from AT&T on an installment plan, AT&T’s own return and exchange terms also apply, so ask AT&T directly.

Buying a used iPhone 18 Pro Max? Check these first

Expect some iPhone 18 Pro Max units to reach the used market — returns, replacements and owners who simply gave up on theirs. A phone that is stuck on SOS and resold as “working on Wi-Fi” is a real risk. Before you pay:

  1. Get the IMEI or serial number. Run the free All-in-one Basic Info check to confirm it really is an 18 Pro Max, and that Find My is off.
  2. Check the carrier lock. A carrier and SIM-lock check shows whether it is tied to AT&T (or another network). A locked AT&T phone on installments is not yours to use on another carrier. See how to check if an iPhone is unlocked.
  3. Check the blacklist. A GSMA blacklist check reveals lost or stolen reports and some unpaid-balance blocks.
  4. Check warranty and replacement history. A full Apple GSX report shows warranty status, purchase details, and whether the device has a replacement or case history — useful for spotting a unit that has already been swapped, or one with an open repair case.
  5. Test signal in person. Insert or install a line, turn Wi-Fi off, make a call and load a web page on cellular. If the status bar says SOS, walk away.

What to do now

  • Pro Max on AT&T, working fine: install iOS 27.0.1 and accept the carrier settings update in Settings › General › About.
  • Pro Max on AT&T, stuck on SOS: back up, gather proof of purchase and request a hardware replacement from Apple Support, an Apple Store or AT&T.
  • iPhone 18 Pro (non-Max): you are not affected by this issue, but install iOS 27.0.1 for its other fixes.
  • Buying used: check carrier lock, blacklist, Find My and GSX replacement history, then test cellular with Wi-Fi off.
