Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026, alongside its first foldable, the iPhone Duo. Preorders opened on 12 September and both Pro models went on sale on 18 September in more than 65 countries. There was no standard iPhone 18 at the event — Apple has split its calendar, and the regular model is expected around six months later.

Here is what is actually inside the new Pros, what changed from the iPhone 17 Pro, and what to check before you buy one — new or used.

The A20 Pro: Apple’s first 2nm phone chip

The A20 Pro is built on TSMC’s 2nm (N2) process, a full node jump from the 3nm A19 Pro. Apple’s numbers:

  • CPU: 6 cores — 2 “super” performance cores (about 20% faster) and 4 efficiency cores.
  • GPU: 7 cores, up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro, with neural accelerators for on-device AI.
  • Neural Engine: a dual 16-core design — 32 cores in total — with twice the FP8 throughput for Apple Intelligence and the new Siri.
  • Memory: 50% more memory bandwidth; the phones are widely reported to ship with 12GB of RAM.
  • Cooling: memory moved out of the main heat path and a vapor chamber roughly three times larger, so the chip can hold its speed for longer.

C2 modem and N1 wireless chip

The Pros use Apple’s own C2 modem, the successor to the C1 and C1X. Apple says it uses about 15% less energy and gives faster uploads, and it adds mmWave 5G support in the US. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread come from Apple’s N1 chip, which first appeared in the iPhone 17 family.

Cameras, battery and design

  • Variable aperture: the 48MP Fusion main camera is the first iPhone camera with a mechanical variable aperture, from f/1.48 to f/4.
  • Apple Reference Image: a new option that cryptographically signs sensor data so a photo can later be proven authentic — useful against edited or AI-generated fakes.
  • Battery: up to 36 hours of video playback on the 18 Pro and 45 hours on the 18 Pro Max (eSIM models). Wired charging reaches 50% in about 15 minutes.
  • Sizes and prices: 6.3-inch Pro from $1,199 and 6.9-inch Pro Max from $1,299, with storage from 256GB up to 2TB.
  • Colors: black, silver, glacier and burgundy, with a redesigned Dynamic Island.

Security: what protects the iPhone 18 Pro

Apple’s launch materials focus on Face ID, the Secure Enclave and Private Cloud Compute for AI requests. The A19 generation introduced Memory Integrity Enforcement, an always-on defence against the memory-corruption bugs that commercial spyware relies on, and the A20 Pro is expected to carry it forward. Combine that with Stolen Device Protection in iOS 27 and the phone is very hard to use if stolen — which is exactly why you must check its status before buying a used one.

Buying an iPhone 18 Pro from someone else? Check it first

New flagships are a magnet for theft and resale fraud in their first months. Before paying:

  • Run the All-in-one Basic Info check — confirm the model really is an 18 Pro and that Find My is OFF.
  • Check the GSMA blacklist to make sure it isn’t reported lost or stolen.
  • Confirm the carrier and SIM-lock with a Carrier + SIM-lock check — an eSIM-only US unit locked to a carrier won’t work on your network.
  • Match the part number with an MPN check to see the real region and whether it’s a replacement unit.
Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.
