Apple shipped its biggest software year since the redesign of 2025: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and the rest arrived on 14 September 2026, three months after WWDC (8 June). On the hardware side, 2026 brought three new laptops, including Apple’s first budget MacBook.
iOS 27: Siri AI and speed
- Siri AI: a rebuilt, conversational Siri that understands personal context, with a standalone Siri app and conversation history. It launched in beta, in English, and is not yet available in the EU or China.
- Apple Intelligence everywhere: in Safari, Shortcuts, Image Playground and Wallet, plus AI photo editing with Spatial Reframing and an improved Clean Up.
- Speed: Apple claims apps open up to 30% faster, Photos up to 70% faster and AirDrop up to 80% faster.
- Liquid Glass: the 2025 design gets better legibility.
- Safety: stronger parental controls and Communication Safety with automatic image filtering for children.
Supported iPhones: iPhone 11 and newer plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) — no additional iPhones were dropped this year. Some Siri AI features need newer hardware, and reports differ on exactly which models.
iPadOS 27 drops the 2018 iPad Pro, iPad (8th gen), iPad mini (5th gen) and iPad Air (3rd gen). watchOS 27 supports Series 9 and newer, Ultra 2 and newer and SE 3.
macOS 27 “Golden Gate”: the end of Intel Macs
macOS 27 is the first version that runs only on Apple silicon. macOS 26 Tahoe was the last release for Intel Macs, so models like the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro, 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro, 2020 iMac and 2019 Mac Pro stay on Tahoe. Apple will keep shipping some security updates to older versions for a while, but an Intel Mac is now a dead end for new features.
Security fixes in 2026
- iOS 26.3 (February) fixed a dyld zero-day used in “an extremely sophisticated attack” against targeted individuals.
- iOS 26.6 (July) brought one of the year’s largest batches of security fixes.
- Late September updates for iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe/Sequoia patched an actively exploited CoreGraphics flaw.
Lesson: keep automatic updates on, and if you’re still on iOS 26, update to the latest point release or move to iOS 27.

The MacBook Neo is the big story: Apple’s first sub-$600 laptop, running macOS on the same A18 Pro chip used in the iPhone 16 Pro. Rumors (Mark Gurman, Bloomberg) also point to an OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro in late 2026 or early 2027.
