OnePlus and Motorola phones are some of the best value buys on the used market — and that’s exactly why they attract imports, carrier-branded units passed off as unlocked, and Chinese-market models sold to buyers who expect global software. Neither brand has an Apple-style public lookup page, so most buyers check nothing at all.

You can do better in about fifteen minutes. This guide walks through the checks that matter for each brand, the model codes that reveal where a phone was made to be sold, and the record checks that catch what the screen can’t show.

Step 1: Read the IMEI and compare three sources

Dial *#06# in the stock Phone app. Both brands sell dual-SIM models, so you may see two IMEIs. Then compare with:

  • OnePlus: Settings › About device › Status (on some versions, Settings › About device › Device details).
  • Motorola: Settings › About phone › IMEI.
  • The SIM tray or box label, if the seller still has it.

All three should agree. A mismatch usually means a replaced motherboard or a box from a different phone — read how to find an IMEI number if a field is missing.

Step 2: Decode the model number and region

The marketing name (“OnePlus 12”, “moto g power”) hides several regional variants with different radios, software and warranty coverage. The model number tells you which one you’re holding.

OnePlus

Go to Settings › About device and open the model details. Global, European, Indian and North American OnePlus phones in recent years use model numbers beginning with CPH. Chinese-market units use different codes — the OnePlus 12 for China, for example, is PJD110 — and ship with ColorOS rather than OxygenOS.

A Chinese unit isn’t automatically bad, but you need to know: some lack Google services out of the box, LTE and 5G band support may not cover your carrier, and the manufacturer warranty usually applies only in its sales region. Sellers sometimes flash global software onto Chinese hardware; the model number in About device often still reveals it.

Motorola

Motorola model numbers start with XT followed by four digits and often a suffix (for example XT2347-x). The suffix varies by region and carrier. Look under Settings › About phone, or read the label in the SIM tray area on some models. Search the full number on Motorola’s site to confirm which market it was built for.

Then confirm it against the official record: run the OnePlus Info check (or the alternative OnePlus Info report) or the Motorola Info check on the IMEI. If the record says a different model, color or region from the phone in your hand, stop.

Step 3: Check carrier lock and blacklist status

This is where most OnePlus and Motorola problems hide in the US. Both brands sell carrier versions — OnePlus through T-Mobile and others in some generations, Motorola through many prepaid brands such as Boost, Metro, Cricket and Straight Talk. Carrier phones can carry a SIM lock and, if unpaid, can be blocked.

  • Quick test: insert a SIM from a different network. A “SIM network unlock PIN” prompt or “SIM not supported” message means the phone is carrier-locked.
  • Record check: a carrier and SIM-lock check shows the lock status without needing a second SIM.
  • Blacklist: a GSMA blacklist check reveals lost or stolen reports. For US phones, the USA blacklist / barred check also catches unpaid-balance blocks.

The difference between a locked and unlocked phone is explained in carrier-locked vs unlocked. Carrier unlock policies change, so confirm requirements on your carrier’s official site — for example T-Mobile’s unlock policy.

Step 4: Unlocking an eligible Motorola

Many Motorola phones accept a network unlock code: insert a foreign SIM, the phone asks for a “SIM network unlock PIN”, you enter the code once and the lock is removed permanently. If your Motorola shows that prompt, the Motorola unlock code by IMEI service is the usual route.

  • Check eligibility first. Some carrier-branded Motorolas unlock only through the carrier’s own app or system, and won’t accept a code at all. If the phone never shows a PIN prompt, a code won’t help.
  • Clean and paid phones only. A phone that’s blacklisted or still being financed must be resolved with the carrier by the account holder — an unlock code doesn’t change its network status.
  • Enter carefully. Phones limit the number of wrong attempts.

For OnePlus carrier models, the unlock normally comes from the carrier once its requirements are met (device paid off, active for the required period, account in good standing).

Step 5: Check accounts, bootloader and software

Google account and FRP

Open Settings › Passwords & accounts (or Accounts). It should be empty, or the seller should remove their account and factory reset the phone while you watch. A phone stuck on “Verify your account” after a reset is protected by Factory Reset Protection — only the owner can clear it. Don’t accept a “bypassed” phone.

Bootloader state

Both brands let enthusiasts unlock the bootloader. Signs that it has been unlocked: a warning screen at power-on saying the device is unlocked or can’t be trusted, or OEM unlocking switched on in Developer options. An unlocked bootloader isn’t illegal, but it can mean custom or modified software, banking apps failing, and — on some Motorola phones — a voided warranty. Our bootloader unlocking guide shows how to check with ADB or fastboot.

Software updates

Settings › System › System update (OnePlus: Settings › About device › software version). Install pending updates before buying if you can; a phone that refuses to update may be running modified firmware.

Step 6: Test the hardware

  • Display: OLED panels on OnePlus and many Moto Edge models can show burn-in. Open a full gray image or a white browser page and look for ghosting of the keyboard or navigation bar.
  • Motorola: open the preinstalled Device Help app for device diagnosis; *#*#2486#*#* opens a test menu on many models.
  • OnePlus: *#*#4636#*#* shows signal details on many builds. Test the alert slider, which tends to get stiff or fail.
  • Charging: OnePlus fast charging (SUPERVOOC/Warp) needs a compatible brick and cable; slow charging on the original charger hints at a port or battery issue.
  • Calls and cameras: make a call on speaker and earpiece; open every lens.

The full code list is in our hidden Android diagnostic codes guide.

Run the checks

Enter the IMEI to run the OnePlus or Motorola record, carrier and blacklist checks together. The IMEI check guide explains every field in the result.

Verdict: a used OnePlus or Motorola is a smart buy when three things line up — the model number matches your region, the IMEI record is clean and unlocked, and the hardware passes a ten-minute test. Miss any one, and you’re gambling.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a OnePlus phone is a Chinese version?

Check the model number in Settings › About device. Global models usually start with CPH; Chinese models use other codes (such as PJD110 for the OnePlus 12) and ship with ColorOS. An IMEI check confirms the sales region.

Can I check a Motorola phone by IMEI?

Yes. A Motorola Info check on the IMEI shows the model and device record, and a blacklist check shows lost or stolen reports.

Does a Motorola unlock code work on every model?

No. It works on Motorola phones that ask for a “SIM network unlock PIN” when a foreign SIM is inserted. Some carrier models unlock only through the carrier, and blacklisted or unpaid phones are not eligible.

Is a OnePlus with an unlocked bootloader safe to buy?

It can work fine, but it may run modified software and some banking or payment apps may fail. Ask why it was unlocked and prefer a phone on official, locked software.

Will a T-Mobile OnePlus work on other networks?

Only after it’s carrier-unlocked. Run a SIM-lock check and confirm the carrier’s unlock requirements on its official site.
