Redmi Note 15 Pro and Pro+ problems: stutter and lag, screen brightness dropping, battery drain and heat, with HyperOS fixes and the HyperOS 4 update timeline.

Ten minutes into a sunny walk with Maps open, the screen that looked dazzling in the shop is hard to read. Fast-fading brightness and everyday stutter are the two Redmi Note 15 Pro problems reviewers and owners keep raising, and they take the shine off a spec sheet that otherwise looks like great value: a very bright OLED, a 200MP camera, a big silicon-carbon battery, IP68, and 100W charging on the Pro+.
Most of the testing quoted here was done on the Pro+. Regular Note 15 Pro owners report the same kinds of issues, and the fixes work on both because they run the same HyperOS. Menu names can vary a little between regional versions.
Before anything else, check for updates in Settings › About phone › HyperOS version (tap it) and restart. A lot of random glitches go away after a fresh boot.
The screen dims a few minutes after you step outside
Xiaomi markets the Pro+ panel at around 3,000 nits peak, and Notebookcheck measured close to that for brief bursts. In its testing, though, peak brightness fell sharply after a short time, to below 990 nits, and manual brightness is far lower again. In summer sun, that’s the gap between a readable screen and an unreadable one.
It’s mostly thermal limiting. The phone turns the brightness down to stop the panel and chip overheating. That isn’t a defect, but you can make it happen less:
- Turn on Automatic brightness in Settings › Display & brightness. The highest boost levels are generally only available in auto mode.
- Find shade, or let the phone cool, if it dims during navigation or video recording.
- Don’t fast-charge in direct sun, since charging heat stacks on top of screen heat.
- Take a thick case off on hot days.
- Dim indoors at room temperature? Check that Reading mode, a Dark mode schedule or battery saver isn’t pulling the brightness down.
Flicker, a green tint, lines or dead touch areas are another matter. Dial *#*#6484#*#* to open Xiaomi’s hidden CIT menu and test the panel. Each test is explained in our Android diagnostic codes list.
Stutter and lag you can’t tune away completely
Notebookcheck’s Pro+ review found frequent stuttering and lag in everyday use and concluded that the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 “is simply too underpowered for the fairly high-resolution OLED panel.” It held back a buy recommendation while praising the battery life and durability.
In practice that means choppy scrolling in social apps and the app drawer, a pause before the camera opens or apps switch, and animations that hitch once the phone has been on for a while. You can’t swap the chip. You can take load off it:
- Restart, and clear apps you don’t need from the recent apps screen.
- Free up space if storage is nearly full, using Cleaner in the Security app and Gallery’s free-up-storage option. A full phone slows down noticeably.
- Try Settings › Additional settings › Memory extension turned off or lowered. It uses storage as virtual RAM, which can make app switching slower on some phones. Restart and compare.
- In Settings › Apps › Manage apps, open the apps you rarely use and switch off Autostart.
- Enable Developer options by tapping HyperOS version seven times in About phone, then set Window, Transition and Animator scale to 0.5x.
- Update your apps from the Play Store. Poorly optimised app versions cause a lot of stutter.
- If the lag started after one particular app, test in safe mode: hold Power, long-press Power off and choose safe mode where it’s offered.
Will HyperOS 4 help?
HyperOS 4 is based on Android 17. According to Gagadget’s rollout schedule, Xiaomi started rolling it out on 15 October 2026 and has the Redmi Note 15 series in the November waves, beginning in China. Xiaomi describes the timelines as approximate. Outside China, stable builds usually land four to six weeks after the Chinese release, and the same model can update weeks apart in different regions.
Until it arrives, keep your current HyperOS version and Xiaomi apps up to date. A big update can smooth things out, but software can’t make the chip faster. Tuning reduces stutter. It doesn’t remove the hardware limit.
Battery drain and heat
Reviewers rate the silicon-carbon battery as one of the phone’s strengths, so heavy drain usually has a specific cause. Allow a few days after setup or a big update, because restoring apps and indexing burn extra power at first. Then go to Settings › Battery, find apps with high background use and restrict them through each app’s Battery saver setting.
Two settings make a real difference. In Settings › Display & brightness › Refresh rate, the default (dynamic) option uses less power than a fixed high rate. And where 5G coverage is weak, switch it off in Settings › Mobile networks › your SIM › Preferred network type, because constant searching for a 5G signal drains the battery. Battery saver and Ultra battery saver are there for long days. Sudden, severe drain after a fall or water exposure needs a battery check at an authorised Xiaomi service centre.
Warmth during 100W charging, long gaming sessions or 4K video is normal. Use the original charger and cable, because mismatched chargers can charge more slowly and still run hotter. Lower in-game graphics and frame rate in hot weather, go easy on the phone while it fast-charges, and close camera and navigation apps when you’re finished with them. A temperature warning in a normal room, a bulging back or screen, or a heat shutdown means it needs inspecting.
Checking a used Note 15 Pro or Pro+
Redmi Notes are some of the most resold Androids anywhere. Before you pay:
- Disque
*#06#for the IMEI and compare it with the box and Settings › About phone. - Run a Xiaomi check for Mi account lock and lost status. A new owner can’t set up a locked Xiaomi, and our Mi account check guide explains why.
- Confirm exactly what you’re buying (Pro or Pro+, global or China version) with a manufacturer and model check.
- Check the GSMA blacklist so you don’t buy a phone reported lost or stolen.
- Run the CIT display and touch tests, and scroll through a busy app to judge the lag for yourself.
When to take it to Xiaomi service
Book an authorised Xiaomi service centre, with your receipt, while the phone is under warranty if you have:
- Lag or freezing that survives a full backup and factory reset.
- Lines, flicker or touch dead zones in the CIT test.
- Charging that stops or overheats with the original charger.
- Signal or SIM problems after a drop or a repair.
Avoid unofficial screen replacements. They often use lower-brightness panels, which makes the dimming worse.
Perguntas frequentes
Why is my Redmi Note 15 Pro lagging?
Reviewers found the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 struggles to drive the high-resolution OLED smoothly. Free up storage, limit autostart apps, try turning off Memory extension and keep apps updated.
Why does the Redmi Note 15 Pro screen get dim outdoors?
The phone limits brightness as it heats up. Notebookcheck measured peak brightness falling below 990 nits after a short time. Use automatic brightness and keep the phone cool.
When will the Redmi Note 15 Pro get HyperOS 4?
HyperOS 4, based on Android 17, is scheduled for the Redmi Note 15 series in November 2026, starting in China. Global builds usually follow a few weeks later.
Is the Redmi Note 15 Pro waterproof?
The Pro+ is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, but water damage usually isn’t covered by warranty, so don’t submerge it on purpose.
How do I test a Redmi Note 15 Pro for hardware faults?
Dial *#*#6484#*#* to open the CIT menu, which tests the display, touch, speakers, sensors and cameras.
Does the Redmi Note 15 Pro overheat?
It gets warm during 100W charging and heavy gaming, which is normal. Temperature warnings in normal conditions or a swollen back need service.
Will a factory reset fix Redmi Note 15 Pro lag?
It can clear lag caused by apps and settings, but not the chip’s limits. If lag survives a reset, have the phone checked by Xiaomi service.
