The day after the update, the status bar says LTE where it always said 5G, and toggling Airplane mode doesn’t bring it back. That’s the complaint that kicked off a run of Pixel 9 Pro problems after Android 17 landed in June 2026. Touchscreens ignoring taps, Wi-Fi showing connected while Gmail won’t load, and disappearing widgets followed, and the September QPR1 release added lag for some owners.
Settings paths below are from a Pixel 9 Pro on Android 17. They’re the same on the Pro XL.
| Problem | Since | Best fix so far |
|---|---|---|
| 5G drops to LTE or mobile data lost | Android 17 (June 2026) | Reset Mobile Network Settings, reboot |
| eSIM missing after restart | Android 17 | Ask your carrier to reissue it |
| Touch stops responding, scroll inverted | Android 17 | Toggle Smooth Display, update |
| Wi-Fi connected, Google apps won’t load | Android 17 | Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi, check Private DNS |
| Home-screen widgets missing | Android 17, mostly with a work profile | Re-add them while Google works on a fix |
| Lag, stutter, apps closing | Android 17 QPR1 (mid-September) | Restart regularly, wait for Google’s patch |
Write down your build number before you change anything
Open Settings › About phone and tap Android version. You’ll see the Android version, the security update date and the build number. Note all three. Google’s forums and support staff ask for them first. On the same screen, check Google Play system update. It updates separately and carries some connectivity and media parts, so if its month is older than the security patch, tap it, install and restart.
Then look for a newer system build in Settings › System › Software updates › System update. According to TechRepublic, the October 2026 update for the Pixel 8, 9 and 10 (security patch 5 October) is build CP3A.261005.005. It fixes audio distortion in some VoIP calls and a keyboard that sometimes didn’t appear in search fields. Rollouts are phased, so it can take a week to reach you.
Stuck on LTE, or the eSIM has gone
LTE where 5G used to be, no mobile data at all, or in some reports the eSIM missing after a restart. Droid Tools collected Reddit reports that name the Pixel 9 Pro, and ChannelNews listed the 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 8 Pro and 8a among phones losing 5G.
Google hasn’t published a cause. A Google support representative answered the Reddit thread with troubleshooting steps, which points to a software or modem configuration problem rather than broken hardware.
- Airplane mode on for 30 seconds, then off.
- Make sure Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › [your SIM] › Preferred network type is set to 5G.
- Restart.
- Settings › System › Reset options › Reset Mobile Network Settings. Personal data isn’t touched.
- One owner says entering repair mode (Settings › System › Repair mode) and then restarting brought 5G back. That’s a user tip, not an official fix, and you’ll need your PIN.
- If the eSIM has disappeared, don’t delete anything else. Call your carrier and ask them to reissue the profile.
Taps not registering and scrolling the wrong way
ChannelNews and ProPakistani reported on 22 June 2026 that touch on some phones stops registering taps and swipes now and then. A few owners also saw “gesture inversion”, where scrolling moves the opposite way. The reports covered Pixel 10, 9 and 8 models.
- Take off any screen protector and clean the glass. Thick or lifting protectors cause the same symptoms.
- Switch Smooth Display off and back on in Settings › Display & touch. Owners say it helps for a while.
- If you use a protector, turn on Screen protector mode in the same menu to raise sensitivity.
- Boot into Safe Mode (hold Power, then touch and hold Restart) to see whether a third-party launcher or overlay app is the cause.
- Install each monthly update as soon as it appears.
A patch of screen that never responds, even in Safe Mode, is almost certainly hardware.
Wi-Fi says connected, YouTube and Gmail say no
Another Android 17 complaint: the Wi-Fi icon looks fine while YouTube, Gmail, the Play Store and Google Photos won’t load.
- Forget the network (Settings › Network & internet › Internet › gear icon › Forget) and join again.
- In that network’s settings, set Privacy to Use device MAC as a test.
- Set Private DNS to Automatic or Off (Settings › Network & internet › Private DNS) and switch off any VPN.
- Turn off Adaptive connectivity (Settings › Network & internet › Adaptive connectivity). It can switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data too eagerly.
- Settings › System › Reset options › Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi. You’ll rejoin networks and re-pair devices afterwards.
Lag after QPR1, and widgets that vanish
Android 17 QPR1 reached Pixels in mid-September 2026. GrapheneOS, the security-focused Android project, said it found a regression in Google’s Pixel kernel drivers that causes stutter, lag and freezes under memory pressure, with apps closed in the background. GrapheneOS shipped its own fix, and Android Authority reported the findings on 5 October. Google hadn’t given a fix date at the time of writing. Until it does:
- Restart every day or two to relieve memory pressure.
- Close heavy apps you aren’t using, and set background hogs to Restricted under Settings › Apps › [app] › App battery usage.
- Look through Settings › Battery › Battery usage for anything odd.
- Don’t keep clearing all apps. Android has to reload them, which can drain more battery.
The driver fix will come as a normal system update. Some battery drain after any new release is the phone re-optimising apps, so give it two or three days before judging.
Widgets gone from the home screen
Some owners lost home-screen widgets after Android 17. Droid Tools noted it mostly affected phones with a work profile, and Google acknowledged the bug and said a future patch would fix it. Long-press the home screen, tap Widgets and add them back. If they disappear after every reboot, pause the work profile, restart, then re-add them.
Keep installing the monthly updates
Security patches matter more than an occasional regression, and the Pixel 9 series is promised seven years of OS and security updates, so fixes will keep coming. If you’d like to be careful, wait a week after each monthly release and read early feedback first. What each release patches is in our Android 17 security overview.
Signs the fault is in the phone, not the software
5G failing on every SIM and network after a reset, touch dead in one spot in Safe Mode, Wi-Fi dropping on every router: those point to hardware. Back up, search Settings for “Diagnostics” to run Google’s built-in hardware tests, and book a repair through Google or the retailer while the phone is under warranty.
Checking a used Pixel 9 Pro
That seven-year update promise makes the 9 Pro a reasonable second-hand buy. Before paying:
- Run a Google Pixel Info check for the exact model, warranty and carrier details.
- Check the IMEI against the GSMA blacklist.
- If you need it unlocked, confirm that with our Pixel carrier unlock guide and test 5G with your own SIM.
- Make sure the seller has removed their Google account, or Factory Reset Protection will stop you after a reset.
