On 16 July 2026 OnePlus said it would stop launching new products in North America and Europe, and a lot of OnePlus Nord 5 owners started asking whether their phone had just been orphaned. It hasn’t. But that question now sits alongside the older OnePlus Nord 5 problems: battery drain on a phone with a 6,800 mAh cell, signal that drops out, heat in games and the odd camera glitch.
The Nord 5 launched in July 2025 with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display at up to 144 Hz, that 6,800 mAh battery and 80 W wired charging. In India it started at Rs. 31,999 for 8 GB/256 GB. OnePlus promised four OS updates and six years of security patches.
Does the EU exit affect your warranty and updates?
According to Android Authority, OnePlus said remaining stock will keep being sold, software update commitments continue, and existing warranty and after-sales obligations stay in place. It also said it may extend updates for some devices, without giving details. In India, OnePlus carries on as normal.
For a Nord 5 owner in Europe, your warranty and the ColorOS 17 update should be unaffected. Keep your proof of purchase. If you bought from a retailer, EU consumer law also gives you rights against the seller, separate from OnePlus.
What usually goes wrong, and the first thing to try
| Problem | Common cause | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| Battery drain | Apps auto-launching, 144 Hz, background activity after updates | Limit Auto launch, check battery usage |
| Network drops / no 5G | Network mode, SIM, carrier settings, VoLTE | Change preferred network type, reset network settings |
| Overheating | Gaming while charging, heavy camera use | Charge before gaming, update apps |
| Camera glitches | App cache, third-party camera access, software build | Clear camera cache, update |
The menu names below come from recent OnePlus software. Wording can differ a little between versions and regions, so if something isn’t where we say, use the search bar at the top of Settings.
A 6,800 mAh battery that won’t last the day
A cell this big should easily get you past a day. If it doesn’t, or you lose a noticeable chunk overnight, something is keeping the phone awake. Usually that’s apps launching themselves in the background, apps that want your location constantly, a weak mobile signal, or the extra work the phone does for a few days after a system update.
- Open Settings › Battery and look at usage by app. Anything with high background use is suspect number one.
- In Settings › Apps › Auto launch, switch it off for apps that have no reason to start on their own: shopping, games, social apps.
- Tap a heavy app in the battery list and restrict or optimise its background activity.
- Drop the refresh rate in Settings › Display & brightness › Screen refresh rate. Standard (60 Hz) uses less power than High.
- Turn on Settings › Battery › Charging options › Smart charging. It learns your routine and slows overnight charging to reduce wear.
- Just updated? Charge overnight on Wi-Fi for a few days before you judge.
No signal, no 5G or calls that drop
Signal vanishes where other phones work, 5G never shows up, or mobile data stops while Wi-Fi is fine. The usual causes are the wrong network mode, an old or damaged SIM, VoLTE or VoWiFi not provisioned by your carrier, or an imported model whose 5G bands don’t match your country. A carrier lock is possible too on phones bought through a network.
- Turn Airplane mode on for 15 seconds so the phone re-registers.
- Go to Settings › Mobile network, tap your SIM, then Preferred network type, and choose the 5G/4G/3G/2G (auto) option. If 5G is shaky where you live, try 4G as a test.
- On the same SIM screen, make sure VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling are on if your carrier supports them.
- Open Access Point Names and pick your carrier’s default APN, or reset to default.
- Power off, take out the SIM, inspect it and put it back. Ask for a new one if it’s old.
- Search Settings for “Reset network settings” (usually System settings › Back up and reset › Reset phone). It clears Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings, not your data.
Still no service with a SIM you know works? Check whether the phone is locked or unsupported on your carrier. Our page on phones that are unlocked but show no service goes into bands and APNs, and a carrier and SIM-lock check reads the lock status from the IMEI.
Hot during games, 4K video or charging
80 W charging already makes heat. Add a game on top and you’ve doubled the load, so the simplest fix is to charge before you play, not during. Beyond that, keep apps and games updated, because a badly optimised game update can push the processor harder than it needs to. Lower in-game graphics or cap the frame rate in the game or the Games app. Take off thick cases and keep out of direct sun.
Hot while idle? Restart it, since a stuck process may be running. If it’s still hot while idle and off the charger after a restart and updates, a service centre should look at it.
Camera freezes, black viewfinder or slow shutter
On mid-range phones, camera complaints usually mean the app freezing, a black viewfinder, a slow shutter, or apps like WhatsApp and Instagram taking worse pictures than the built-in camera.
- Force-stop the Camera app: Settings › Apps › App management › Camera › Force stop.
- On the same screen, go to Storage usage › Clear cache.
- Remove anything that may be holding the camera, such as a screen recorder or an old camera mod.
- Update to the latest software. Camera tuning often comes with it.
A viewfinder that stays black, or a lens that rattles, is hardware. Book a repair.
Buying a second-hand Nord 5
Indian, European and other versions can differ in network bands, so confirm the exact model and market version with a manufacturer and model check. Dial *#06# and run a Verificação de blacklist GSMA on both IMEIs. A free All-in-one Basic Info check is a good first step, and the used OnePlus and Motorola checklist covers the in-person tests.
Getting ready for ColorOS 17 in December
According to TechRepublic’s report on OnePlus’s rollout table, the Nord 5 is due to get ColorOS 17, based on Android 17, in December 2026, along with the Nord CE5 and Nord CE6 Lite. The Nord 6 and Nord CE6 go first, in November 2026, and the Nord 4 follows between January and March 2027. Those are start dates; updates arrive in batches by model, region and carrier.
The bigger change is the software itself, because OnePlus is moving away from OxygenOS. TechRepublic reports that switching to ColorOS is voluntary for existing owners and that OnePlus promises a rollback option, though it hasn’t said which versions that covers.
- Back up with OnePlus Clone Phone, Google One or a computer before the update lands.
- Check for it in Settings › About device, under the software version.
- Wait for the over-the-air release in your region. Don’t sideload firmware from unofficial sites.
- After installing, give the battery a few days to settle before changing settings.
