OnePlus 16 Launched: Specs, Price and Why It Skips US & Europe

Around 70,000 pre-orders in the first hour. That’s what Time News reported for the OnePlus 16 after its launch in China, and almost none of those buyers are in the US or Europe. The phone has a 9,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. It arrives months after OnePlus said it would stop launching new products in North America and Europe, so it may never be sold officially there.

If you’re in one of those markets and want one, you’ll be importing. Here’s what that involves.

The China launch on 12 October

OnePlus unveiled the phone in China on 12 October 2026, with sales through OPPO’s online store starting the next day, according to the Free Press Journal. Time News, which reported the pre-order figure, said open sales and shipments begin on 31 October.

In China it runs ColorOS 17 based on Android 17. Global software (OxygenOS) and international availability, India included, had not been confirmed at launch, according to the same report.

Specs, and how they compare with the OnePlus 15

Comparison figures from Time News and Tech Advisor show three real changes from the OnePlus 15.

Battery. 9,000mAh against 7,300mAh is about 23% bigger, and it still charges at 100W wired and 50W wireless. If you regularly end the day under 20%, this is the change you’d feel. Tech Advisor notes there are no built-in magnets for Qi2 accessories without a case. It also warns that a global version, if one appears, may have a slightly smaller battery.

Camera. The main sensor goes from 50MP to 200MP, and the selfie camera from 32MP to 50MP. More megapixels allow more cropping, but image quality depends on processing. Wait for full camera reviews.

Chip. The OnePlus 15 uses a 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The 16 moves to a 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, one of the first with mobile CPU cores above 5GHz, which should mean gains in speed and efficiency. The 15 is still a very fast phone. CNY 5,999 to start, and why that’s a jump

China pricing, as reported by the Free Press Journal and Time News:

Time News points out that the OnePlus 15 launched in China at CNY 3,999 in October 2025. The new starting price is CNY 2,000 higher, roughly 50% more. It also reported a promotional launch price of CNY 5,699 for the base model. There is no US, UK or EU price, because OnePlus hasn’t announced the phone for those markets.

An imported phone nearly always costs more than the converted China price. Importers add shipping and their own margin, and in many countries import duty and sales tax or VAT come on top. A marketplace listing at the converted CNY price can still bring extra charges at delivery. Compare the final landed cost with flagships that are sold officially where you live.

Why there’s no US or European release

On 15 July 2026, Bloomberg reported that OnePlus would wind down operations in the US and Europe as part of a restructuring at parent company OPPO. TechCrunch then got a statement from OnePlus confirming it will no longer launch new products in Europe and North America. OnePlus said users’ rights, including after-sales support and software updates, “will remain fully guaranteed” for existing devices.

India is murkier. Bloomberg’s report also mentioned a wind-down there, but OnePlus’s statement to TechCrunch only covered Europe and North America, and Indian availability of the OnePlus 16 hadn’t been confirmed at launch. Treat any India launch date you see as a rumour until OnePlus India announces it.

So is there a OnePlus 16 release date in the USA? Going by the company’s own statement, don’t expect one. Any OnePlus 16 for sale in the US, UK or EU will be an import.

What you give up with an import

Buying a Chinese-market phone through an importer or marketplace is legal in most countries. The catches are practical.

Bands and carrier features. Chinese models are built around Chinese carriers’ networks. Some 4G and 5G bands used by carriers in the US, UK, Nigeria or the Middle East may be missing. VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and 5G standalone often depend on your carrier approving that exact model. Software. The China version runs ColorOS 17, not OxygenOS. Expect Chinese-language defaults, preloaded Chinese apps and, depending on the build, extra steps to get Google services working smoothly. Some sellers flash a different ROM so the phone looks “global”. That can affect updates and security, so ask exactly what software is on it.

Warranty. With no official sales in the US or Europe, there’s no local OnePlus warranty for a OnePlus 16 bought there. Repairs usually go through the importer, which can mean posting the phone abroad. Get the seller’s warranty terms in writing.

Should you import one, or wait?

Importing makes sense if you’re comfortable with phones, you’ve confirmed your carrier supports the bands, and battery life matters more to you than anything else. It makes the least sense if you rely on carrier features like Wi-Fi calling, want a fast local repair when something breaks, or plan to sell it later. Imported models can be harder to resell where buyers expect a local warranty.

• You already own a OnePlus. OnePlus says updates and after-sales support continue. Keep it updated and hang on to your proof of purchase.
• You want the OnePlus 16 anyway. Weigh the battery and camera gains against no local warranty and possible band gaps. Waiting for a global model, if one appears, is reasonable. Either way, buy from a seller who states the region clearly.
• You want a big-battery flagship with local support. Look at officially sold phones from the same chip generation instead.

Checks before you pay for an imported or used OnePlus 16

1. Disque *#06# and compare the IMEI with the box and the listing.
2. Run a manufacturer and model check to confirm the exact model code and region.
3. For a used phone, run a Verificação de blacklist GSMA so you don’t end up with one reported lost or stolen.
