Huawei Pura 80 Ultra problems: no Google services, Gbox and MicroG caveats, heat under load, scratch-prone glass, updates and repair costs — honest fixes.

You switch on a new Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, go looking for the Play Store, and it isn’t there. For buyers outside China that is the first of the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra problems, and it shapes most of the others: Google apps that run poorly through workarounds, late notifications, plus heat under load, glass that picks up fine scratches and expensive repairs.
The camera is one of the most ambitious ever put in a phone. Some of the rest you can fix, some you can reduce, and some you just have to accept. Each section says which.
No Google Play: what that actually means
Global Pura 80 Ultra units run EMUI with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), not Google Mobile Services. That’s a result of US trade restrictions on Huawei. There’s no Google Play Store. Apps that depend on Google Play services for notifications, sign-in, maps or payments may not work, or may only partly work. Phones without Google certification also fail Play Protect checks, and our page on Play Protect certification explains what that affects.
For everyday use, start with what works natively:
- Search AppGallery first. Plenty of popular apps (WhatsApp, banking apps in some regions, TikTok) are listed directly or turn up through AppGallery’s quick-app search.
- Use web apps. Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube and Google Maps work in the browser. Add them to the Home screen.
- Try Huawei’s own versions, such as Petal Maps, and Huawei Cloud for backups.
- Sync by hand. If you run Google Photos through a workaround, open it regularly to trigger uploads, and keep a second backup.
Gbox and MicroG, and their catches
Many owners install Google apps through Gbox, a container app, or MicroG, an open-source re-implementation of Google services. According to Mobile-Review, Google apps run less smoothly this way. In the reviewer’s case, Google Photos sync had to be started manually.
What to expect:
- Neither tool is supported by Huawei or Google, and an update can break them without warning.
- Banking apps, Google Wallet and some games that check device integrity often refuse to run.
- Notifications can arrive late, because push delivery isn’t native.
- You’re signing in to your Google account inside a third-party layer. Download these tools only from their official sources or Huawei’s AppGallery, and turn on two-step verification before you sign in. Our guide to securing your Google account shows how.
WhatsApp messages arriving late
Messages from WhatsApp, email or social apps turn up late, or only when you open the app. Some apps restart from scratch every time you switch back to them.
Huawei’s power management closes background apps aggressively to save battery. Apps that would normally use Google’s push service have to hold their own connection open instead, and when EMUI closes them, their notifications stop.
- Let the app run in the background. Go to Settings › Apps › App launch (or Settings › Battery › App launch), find the app, switch off “Manage automatically”, and enable auto-launch, secondary launch and run in background.
- Lock it in recent apps. In the recent apps view, pull down on the app card to lock it, if your EMUI version has this.
- Check notification permissions for each app in Settings › Notifications & status bar.
- Turn off Power saving mode when you need instant notifications.
- Update the app from AppGallery or its official source. Newer builds often handle HMS push better.
Battery use goes up a little after these changes. That’s the price of notifications that arrive on time.
Heat from a 7nm-class Kirin
The phone gets noticeably warm during gaming, long video recording, navigation or heavy camera use. Mobile-Review notes that the Kirin chip, made on a 7nm-class process, warms up under load and scores roughly a third of what current flagship chips manage in synthetic benchmarks. Everyday tasks stay smooth.
- Don’t game or record long 4K video while charging.
- Take thick cases off for fast charging, and keep the phone out of direct sun.
- Lower refresh rate and brightness in Settings › Display & brightness when you don’t need them.
- Look at Settings › Battery › More battery settings and the app power usage list for anything that never stops.
- Turn down graphics in demanding games.
Warm under load is expected. A temperature warning during light use, or heat while idle, needs a Huawei service check.
Security patches, not new EMUI versions
The global Pura 80 Ultra runs EMUI 15. Mobile-Review notes that Huawei’s previous-year flagships got security patches but not new EMUI versions, and describes EMUI as a transitional platform while Huawei concentrates on HarmonyOS in China. Expect security updates, not a major OS upgrade. Samsung and Google now promise seven years of updates.
Check for updates in Settings › System & updates › Software update, and install security patches promptly. This phone can’t lean on Google Play system updates.
A few other things owners mention. It’s a big, heavy phone, and a case adds to that. Mobile-Review rates its video behind Apple and Samsung, with autofocus that can hunt on moving subjects, so set a fixed focus point for clips that matter. And it costs a lot more than the Pura 80 Pro, which suits many buyers just as well.
Buying a grey-import Pura 80 Ultra
Second-hand Pura 80 Ultras are often grey imports, so confirm what you’re getting. Chinese-market units run HarmonyOS, not EMUI, and installing apps works differently on them.
- Check the model and region with a manufacturer and model check on the IMEI.
- Run a Verificação de blacklist GSMA.
- Make sure the previous owner has removed their Huawei ID.
- Look over the camera glass and screen under bright light for scratches.
Protecting the glass and camera from day one
Huawei uses its second-generation Kunlun Glass. According to Mobile-Review it resists deep scratches better but picks up fine surface scratches more easily. Even the camera rings of other phones in the same pocket or bag can leave marks. Repairs are expensive too, and Mobile-Review singles out the telephoto module as especially costly and easily damaged in a drop.
- Keep the factory film on the screen and replace it when it wears, or fit a good tempered-glass protector.
- Buy a case early, ideally an official one with a raised lip round the camera. The bump sticks out more than 1.5cm. Official cases are hard to find in some markets, so many owners import them.
- Keep it away from keys and coins. Sand and grit cause most fine scratches.
- Wipe the camera glass with a microfibre cloth before shooting. On a module this big, smudges blur photos. A matte case helps with fingerprints on the glossy back.
- Think about Huawei Care or device insurance when you buy.
- Use authorised Huawei service centres only. Third-party camera repairs can affect image quality and the warranty. Get a written quote first and ask whether the part is genuine.
Perguntas frequentes
Does the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra have Google apps?
No. There’s no Google Play Store or Google services. You can use AppGallery, web apps, or third-party tools like Gbox and MicroG, which run Google apps less smoothly.
Is Gbox safe on the Pura 80 Ultra?
It’s a third-party tool that Huawei and Google don’t support. Get it only from official sources, turn on two-step verification for your Google account, and expect banking or Wallet apps not to work.
Why does my Pura 80 Ultra get hot?
The 7nm-class Kirin chip warms up under heavy load such as gaming, long video recording or navigation. Avoid heavy use while charging and lower the refresh rate and brightness.
Does the Pura 80 Ultra scratch easily?
Reviewers say its second-generation Kunlun Glass resists deep scratches but picks up fine surface ones. Keep the factory film on or fit a screen protector.
Will the Pura 80 Ultra get new EMUI updates?
Going by Huawei’s recent pattern, global EMUI models get security patches but not new EMUI versions.
Is the Pura 80 Ultra expensive to repair?
Yes. The camera, and the telephoto module in particular, is costly to replace. Use a case with a camera lip and consider Huawei Care or insurance.
