Apple announced the OLED iPad mini on 27 October 2026, and it goes on sale 6 November. It is the first iPad mini to drop the LCD panel it has carried since 2012, swapping in an 8.5-inch OLED screen, an A20 Pro chip and an IP67 rating. The headline most people will react to, though, is the price: it now starts at $699, well above the $499 the previous model launched at.

So what actually changed, where did Apple cut a corner, and is the jump from the old mini worth paying for? Here is the breakdown.

What’s new in the OLED iPad mini?

The last iPad mini (the A17 Pro model from late 2024) was a good small tablet held back by one tired component: its 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD, which also suffered the much-discussed “jelly scrolling” effect. The 2026 model fixes that at the root.

  • 8.5-inch OLED display. Per-pixel brightness, true blacks, and far better contrast and HDR than any LCD mini. The screen also grows slightly while the body stays compact.
  • A20 Pro chip. The same chip family as the iPhone 18 Pro, a big generational jump from the A17 Pro — faster for games, photo editing and on-device Apple Intelligence.
  • IP67 water and dust resistance. A first for the mini. It can survive a drop in the sink or a rained-on commute, within the usual IP67 limits.
  • Thinner and lighter. OLED panels are slimmer than backlit LCDs, so Apple shaved the chassis down further.
  • Acoustic-display speakers that use the screen surface for sound, plus an adaptive True Tone flash for the rear camera.
  • Nano-texture glass on select configurations, the matte, anti-glare option previously reserved for pricier iPads.
  • 35W fast charging over USB-C — though the fast charger is sold separately.

It comes in two colours. For the official spec sheet — exact model number, storage and finish — the Apple model, storage and color check reads it straight from the serial.

OLED iPad mini vs the old iPad mini: a spec comparison

Here is how the 2026 model lines up against the A17 Pro mini it replaces.

Weight, exact thickness and battery figures were not fully published by Apple at announcement, so treat any specific number floating around as unofficial until the spec page goes live.

Why does the OLED iPad mini still have no ProMotion?

This is the catch, and it is a real one. Despite the new OLED panel, the mini stays at a fixed 60Hz refresh rate. There is no ProMotion, the 120Hz adaptive mode that makes scrolling and Apple Pencil input feel smoother on the iPad Pro.

For a $699 tablet in 2026, that stings. If you are coming from a 120Hz iPhone or an iPad Pro, you will notice the difference the moment you flick through a long page. OLED improves colour, contrast and black levels dramatically, but it does nothing for motion smoothness. If buttery scrolling is your priority, the mini is not the iPad for you — and Apple clearly reserves ProMotion for its higher tiers.

It also affects the Apple Pencil. The mini supports hover and pressure, but at 60Hz the on-screen ink lags a touch behind the tip compared with a ProMotion iPad. For quick notes it is fine; for detailed drawing, the Pro remains the better canvas.

The 512GB iPad mini has a faster chip — here’s the catch

One detail is easy to miss on the order page. The storage tiers are not just about capacity this year. According to reporting from the launch, the 512GB model ships with a binned A20 Pro that has an extra CPU core and a dual Neural Engine, while the smaller-storage models get a slightly cut-down version of the chip.

Apple has done binning-by-storage before on the iPad mini, but pairing it with a dual Neural Engine makes the top tier the one to pick if on-device AI matters to you. If you only need the tablet for reading, notes and video, the base model’s chip is still a large leap over the A17 Pro and the storage difference won’t change your day. Buyers comparing it to a new phone should also look at our best phone of 2026 roundup, since a big-screen Pro phone covers a lot of what a small tablet does.

How much did the iPad mini price go up?

The 2024 iPad mini started at $499. The OLED model starts at $699 — a $200 jump for the entry configuration. Apple raised prices across parts of its 2026 line, and the mini took one of the sharper increases because the OLED panel is genuinely expensive to produce at this size.

Put plainly: you are paying iPad Air money for the smallest iPad. That reframes the decision. The mini is no longer the cheap way into the iPad family; it is a premium small tablet for people who specifically want the compact size. If the price climb bothers you, it fits a wider 2026 pattern we covered in Apple’s November 2026 releases.

Budget for the extras, too. The 35W charger that enables fast charging is sold separately, and the matching iPad mini Smart Folio runs $79. Add a case and a charger and the real out-the-door cost sits closer to $800 than $699.

Is the OLED iPad mini worth it?

It depends entirely on which mini you are coming from.

  • From an older mini (2021 or earlier): yes. OLED, IP67, a vastly faster chip and USB-C fast charging add up to a complete generational upgrade.
  • From the 2024 A17 Pro mini: harder to justify. You gain OLED and water resistance, but you lose $200 and still get no ProMotion. Unless the screen quality genuinely bothers you, that mini is still excellent.
  • If you want the smallest possible iPad and nothing else will do: this is the one, and it is the best mini Apple has made. Just go in knowing about the 60Hz limit.

Anyone hunting for a better deal should also weigh a used or open-box unit of the 2024 mini, which will drop in price now that the new one is out. How to check an iPad before you buy it

Whether you buy new, refurbished or used, verify the device by its serial number before you hand over money. A few minutes of checking saves you from a locked, lost or misdescribed tablet.

  • Confirm the model and specs. Sellers mislabel storage and generation constantly. The Apple model, color and storage check decodes the serial so you know you are getting the exact iPad mini you paid for — including whether it is the OLED A20 Pro model or an older mini.
  • Check Activation Lock / Find My. The same check shows the Find My state. If Activation Lock is on and the seller can’t remove it, walk away — you will not be able to set the iPad up.
  • Check the warranty. Run the Apple warranty check to see if it is still covered by Apple and roughly how old it is. A brand-new iPad mini should show close to a full year.
  • Start with a free scan. If you only have the serial and want a first look, the free all-in-one basic check is a quick way to confirm the device is real before you dig deeper.
  • Match the serial to the box and Settings. The number on the chassis, the box label and Settings › General › About must all agree. A mismatch means parts were swapped or the box isn’t the device’s own.

Do these five things and you will know exactly what you are buying — a genuine, unlocked, in-warranty OLED iPad mini, not someone else’s problem.

Don’t guess — check it.Enter the IMEI or serial and get official records in seconds. Your first All-in-one check is free.
